This document is a user manual for Doheny's Inground VS Pumps, specifically item numbers 90500 and 90550. It covers installation, operation, parts, performance, alerts, and warranty information.
Function Description
The Doheny's Inground VS Pump is a variable speed pump designed for use with swimming pool filtration systems, as well as spas, waterfalls, cleaners, heaters, and salt chlorine systems. It offers flexible operation through a control panel, allowing users to run the pump on three scheduled programs: Regular mode (using quick start buttons), Mode 1 (16-hour clean cycle), and Mode 2 (24-hour clean cycle). The pump is designed for energy efficiency and extended motor life through step-by-step acceleration and deceleration.
Important Technical Specifications
The pump's control panel features a four-digit LED screen that displays current time, running speed (RPM), and alarm conditions. It supports a 12-hour AM/PM system.
The pump offers three quick start buttons with default speeds:
- ECO: Default 1500 RPM, adjustable range 1000-2400 RPM.
- CLEAN: Default 2400 RPM, adjustable range 2400-2850 RPM.
- BOOST: Default 3250 RPM, adjustable range 2850-3450 RPM.
MODE 1 - 16 Hour Running Cycle (Default Settings):
- S1: Start Time 6:00 am, Running Hour 3 (adjustable), Default Speed 2400 RPM (CLEAN).
- S2: Start Time 9:00 am, Running Hour 5 (adjustable), Default Speed 1500 RPM (ECO).
- S3: Start Time 6:00 pm, Running Hour 3 (adjustable), Default Speed 2400 RPM (CLEAN).
- S4: Start Time 9:00 pm, Running Hour 5 (adjustable), Default Speed 1500 RPM (ECO).
MODE 2 - 24 Hour Running Cycle (Default Settings):
- S1: Start Time 12:00 pm, Running Hour 6 (adjustable), Default Speed 1500 RPM (ECO).
- S2: Start Time 6:00 am, Running Hour 3 (adjustable), Default Speed 2400 RPM (CLEAN).
- S3: Start Time 9:00 am, Running Hour 9 (adjustable), Default Speed 1500 RPM (ECO).
- S4: Start Time 6:00 pm, Running Hour 6 (adjustable), Default Speed 2400 RPM (CLEAN).
The pump includes LED indicators for speed, alarm conditions, and error messages related to under/over voltage, high temperature, over current, and freeze protection. It also features a memory function to keep records of scheduled programs for up to 15 days after a power off.
Alert Codes and Descriptions:
- 1: Blocked/Short Circuit/Overheat
- 2: Voltage input exceeds limit
- 4: High input voltage
- 8: Low input voltage
- 16: Exceeds maximum speed
- 32: Speed is 0
- 64: Motor phase loss

- 4096: Hardware test error (contact Harris)
The pump is available with 1.5 HP and 3 HP variable speed motors.
Usage Features
Starting the Pump:
Upon power-on, the display shows the current time. Pressing any of the ECO, CLEAN, or BOOST buttons will start the pump. Initially, the pump runs at 2850 RPM for 5 minutes to eliminate air and prevent dry grinding of the impeller, then switches to the selected program's default speed.
Stopping the Pump:
Pressing the STOP button will halt the pump, and the lights on the screen will twinkle.
Changing Running Speed:
- Regular Mode (ECO/CLEAN/BOOST): While running, use the UP/DOWN arrow buttons to adjust speed in 50 RPM increments. Changes are saved automatically. Switching between ECO/CLEAN/BOOST during operation will not trigger the initial 5-minute high-speed run again.
- MODE 1/MODE 2: To change speeds for S1/S3, first press CLEAN (or stop the pump if CLEAN doesn't work). After the 5-minute high-speed run, use arrow buttons to adjust RPM. For S2/S4, first press ECO (or stop the pump if ECO doesn't work). After the 10-minute high-speed run, use arrow buttons to adjust RPM. The adjustable range for S1/S3 is 2400-2850 RPM (default 2400 RPM), and for S2/S4 is 1000-2400 RPM (default 1500 RPM).
- Note: Speed adjustments in MODE 1/MODE 2 are linked to the quick start buttons. For example, in MODE 1, S1 and S3 are CLEAN speeds, while S2 and S4 are ECO speeds.
Setting and Changing Mode 1/Mode 2 Specifications:
- Ensure the pump is stopped.
- Press MENU to set the current time using arrow buttons (LEFT/RIGHT for digit, UP/DOWN for value).
- Press ENTER to save and exit, or MENU again to continue adjusting MODE 1/MODE 2 settings.
- Adjust start times and running hours for each stage (S1-S4) using arrow buttons. Each press adjusts running hours by 1 hour.
- Speed adjustments for MODE 1/MODE 2 stages are done by selecting the corresponding quick start button (CLEAN for S1/S3, ECO for S2/S4) and then using arrow buttons to change RPM.
Alerts and Warnings:
The control panel displays alerts. When an alarm exists, the corresponding LED lights up, and all control panel buttons are disabled until the alarm is acknowledged by holding the ENTER button until the display turns off.
- POWER OUT FAILURE: Supply voltage below 190 VAC.
- PRIMING ERROR: If the pump fails to prime within the maximum priming time, it stops and generates a 10-minute priming alarm, then retries. After 5 failed attempts, a permanent alarm is generated, requiring manual reset.
- OVERHEAT ALERT: Drive temperature exceeds 103°F (39.4°C), causing the pump to slowly reduce speed until the condition clears.
- OVER CURRENT: Indicates motor overload or electrical problem. The drive restarts once the condition clears.
- OVER VOLTAGE: Indicates excessive supply voltage or external water causing the pump/motor to rotate, generating excessive voltage in the drive's internal DC buss. Press STOP or another mode to rerun the pump.
Maintenance Features
General Maintenance:
- Strainer Basket: Clean regularly. Do NOT strike the basket to clean.
- Strainer Cover Gasket: Inspect regularly and replace as needed.
- Lubrication: Pumps have self-lubricating motor bearings and shaft seals; no additional lubrication is necessary.
- Motor Cleanliness: Keep the motor clean and ensure air vents are free from obstruction. Do NOT use water to hose off the motor.
- Shaft Seals: Replace occasionally due to wear or damage.
Storage/Winterization:
- Purging: Do NOT purge the system with compressed air. Use only a low-pressure (below 5 psi), high-volume blower for air purging the pump, filter, or piping.
- Freezing: Allowing the pump to freeze will void the warranty.
- Antifreeze: Use ONLY propylene glycol as antifreeze in your pool/spa system.
- Draining: Drain all water from the pump and piping when freezing temperatures are expected or when storing the pump for an extended period.
- Motor Storage: Keep the motor dry and covered during storage. To avoid condensation/corrosion, do NOT cover or wrap the pump with plastic film or bags.
Doheny Enterprises, Inc. offers a 1-year limited warranty from the date of purchase for original purchasers. This warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for the pump and its housing/strainer. Defective parts will be replaced without charge within 90 days of receipt of the defective product, barring unforeseen delays. After 90 days, defective components must be returned (transportation paid) to the place of purchase for warranty replacements. The warranty does not cover failures due to freezing, negligence, improper installation, use, or care, or use in association with an automatic valving system. Doheny is not responsible for cartage, removal, reinstallation labor, or other associated costs. The warranty does not apply to components manufactured by other companies.
