Overview

This document is an operation manual for Dometic Gravity-Discharge Toilets, specifically covering the 500 Series Toilets and the Model 111 Toilet. It provides comprehensive instructions for installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, along with important safety information and warranty details.

Function Description

The Dometic gravity-discharge toilets are designed for use in recreational vehicles or similar settings, discharging waste directly into a holding tank. They are not suitable for conventional residential or commercial plumbing systems with horizontal pipe runs. The toilets feature a flush pedal mechanism for adding water to the bowl and flushing its contents. A small amount of water is intended to remain in the bowl after flushing to ensure a positive seal. The manual emphasizes the importance of proper cleaning, winterization, and the use of specific deodorants and special tissue designed for low-water toilet systems to prevent clogging and maintain optimal performance.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Water Supply Fitting: 0.5 in. NPT
  • Water Supply Flow Rate: 2.0 gpm / 9.5 lpm minimum
  • Discharge Floor Flange: 3 in. / 76 mm ID ABS or PVC flange connection, designed to be directly over a waste holding tank.
  • Mounting: The floor flange should be at least 11 inches (279 mm) from the back wall.
  • Toilet Models Covered: 500 Series Toilets (including 510+, 510PS, 511, 511PS) and Model 111 Toilet.
  • Seat Compatibility: Dometic toilet models 111, 510, and 511 accept handicap or household decorative seats.

Usage Features

  • Easy Operation: The toilet is operated by a flush pedal. Lifting or raising the pedal adds water to the bowl, while pushing it all the way down flushes the contents.
  • Water Level Control: Users can control the amount of water added to the bowl by how long they hold the flush pedal up. More water is generally needed for flushing solids.
  • Efficient Flushing: A minimum flow rate of 2 gpm (7.6 lpm) at the toilet is required for proper rim and bowl wash. Holding the flush pedal down for 4-8 seconds may be necessary depending on water flow pressures.
  • Positive Seal: Releasing the flush pedal allows it to snap back, ensuring a positive seal around the flush ball and retaining a small amount of water in the bowl.
  • Model Identification: A label on the toilet base under the pedestal cover provides model and serial numbers, crucial for customer service and parts replacement.

Maintenance Features

  • Routine Cleaning: Dometic Toilet Bowl Cleaner is recommended for routine cleaning. Non-abrasive bathroom and toilet bowl cleaners can be used if the Dometic cleaner is unavailable.
  • Flush Ball Cleaning: Regular cleaning of the flush ball and seal is necessary to prevent mineral deposits from hard water, which can lead to slow water leaks. This involves pressing and releasing the flush pedal multiple times to loosen debris, and if needed, using a soft bristle brush and cleaner.
  • Winterization (Non-toxic Antifreeze): For storage in freezing temperatures, non-toxic antifreeze (propylene glycol) designated for potable water systems should be poured into the potable water tank and flushed through the toilet until it flows completely. Hand sprayers, if present, must also be cycled.
  • Winterization (Draining Water): Alternatively, the water supply to the toilet can be turned off, the supply line disconnected, and the flush pedal pressed to drain all water from the water valve and vacuum breaker. The water line should remain disconnected until freezing temperatures have passed.
  • Deodorants: Regular addition of a deodorant product is required to reduce waste tank odors and break down contents. Liquid products are recommended for quicker action.
  • Special Tissue: Dometic tissue is specifically designed for low-water toilet systems due to its rapid dissolving properties, which minimize clogging and enhance deodorant efficiency. Household toilet paper is not recommended as it often contains adhesives that prevent breakdown.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A detailed guide is provided to address common issues such as odors, water not staying in the bowl, flush ball malfunctions, water not shutting off, leaks, and improper water flow, along with possible causes and service instructions. This includes guidance on tightening band clamps, inspecting seals, cleaning components, and replacing parts like the water valve, shaft, or spring cartridge.
  • Customer Service: A strong worldwide network of authorized service centers is available. Contact information for telephone, fax, and website is provided for customer support in the U.S.A., Canada, and internationally.
