Overview

This document provides installation and operating instructions for the Dometic RM4605 and RM4805 AES III refrigerators, designed for use in motor homes and caravans.

Function Description:

The Dometic RM4605 and RM4805 are absorption refrigerators equipped with an Automatic Energy Selector (AES) system. This system automatically manages the refrigerator's operation and energy supply, prioritizing 230-240V AC, then 12V DC, and finally LP gas. The AES requires a continuous 12V DC supply to power its electronics. The refrigerator is designed for storing fresh and frozen foods and for making ice. It features a flame failure device for LP gas operation, which automatically opens to allow gas flow and energizes an electronic igniter. If the flame goes out, the reigniter automatically relights it. A 12V DC heating cable is included to evaporate water droplets that may form on the metal frame between the freezer and fresh food compartments in high humidity conditions.

  • Safety time / TS: 45 s
  • Inter-waiting time / TWI: 120 s
  • Working temperature: -20°C to +45°C

Usage Features:

  • Automatic Energy Selector (AES): Simplifies operation by automatically selecting the best available energy source (230-240V AC, 12V DC, or LP gas). A 12V DC supply is always required for the electronics.
  • Control Panel: Features an ON/OFF button, AES/GAS mode selector button, temperature selector button, and indicator lamps for AES mode, GAS mode, AC mode, DC mode, temperature setting, and gas failure warning.
  • Starting the Refrigerator: Press the ON/OFF button. The refrigerator starts in the mode it was in when turned off. The AES/GAS button allows manual selection of AES or LP gas only.
  • LP Gas Operation: Automatically selected when no AC or 12V DC (engine not running) is available. The flame failure device and electronic igniter ensure safe and immediate lighting. The reigniter automatically relights the flame if it goes out.
  • 230-240V Operation: Prioritized when available. 12V DC is still needed for internal electronics.
  • 12V Operation: Selected when the vehicle engine is running (detected by the alternator D+ connection). The system shuts down if 12V DC drops below 9V DC.
  • Switching Between Energy Sources: The AES system incorporates delays (e.g., 15 minutes between engine shut-off and gas mode start) to prevent unnecessary gas operation during short stops.
  • Temperature Regulation: An electronic thermostat, controlled by the temperature selector button, sets the temperature for all three energy sources. Larger circles on the indicator lamps (E) indicate lower temperatures.
  • Travel Catch: Ensures the refrigerator door remains closed while the vehicle is in motion.
  • Food Storage: Recommends keeping food in closed containers, allowing hot food to cool before storage, and following package instructions for frozen food storage.
  • Ice Making: Ice can be made more rapidly by setting the thermostat to its highest position, then returning it to normal once ice is formed.
  • Defrosting: Regular defrosting is recommended when frost reaches about 3 mm thickness. Do not use heating appliances or sharp objects to accelerate defrosting.
  • Airing Position Card: A card is provided to keep the doors ajar when the refrigerator is not in use for extended periods or in storage, preventing odors and mildew.
  • Heating Cable: A 12V DC heating cable is standard to evaporate condensation between compartments in high humidity. It can be left on continuously or used as needed. It draws 12V DC power continuously when in the ON position and should be turned off if a charging source is not available.
  • Reversible Doors: The refrigerator is equipped with reversible doors; a special kit is required for this procedure.
  • Removable Shelves: Shelves can be removed and repositioned by disengaging shelf locks with a flat-bladed screwdriver, tilting the shelf, and reinserting it into desired holes.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: The interior should be cleaned regularly with a solution of bicarbonate of soda and warm water. Avoid detergents, scouring powder, strongly scented products, or wax polish. The exterior can be wiped with a damp cloth and mild detergent, but the door gasket should only be cleaned with soap and water. The cooling unit behind the refrigerator should be brushed clean periodically (with the refrigerator switched off).
  • Bulb Replacement: The internal bulb can be replaced by removing the lamp cover and installing a new 12V, max 10W appliance bulb.
  • Turning Off for Storage: For extended periods of non-use, turn off the refrigerator, shut off gas valves, unplug from the wall socket, empty, defrost, clean, and leave doors ajar.
  • Annual Service: Dometic recommends an authorized service technician check the refrigerator once a year.
  • Gas Safety: Ensure the gas safety shut-off valve is working properly and ventilation openings are unobstructed. The burner should be kept clean and free from combustible material.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides steps for troubleshooting gas operation failures (e.g., checking gas supply, restarting), and issues with insufficient cooling (e.g., ventilation, frost, thermostat setting, gas pressure, ambient temperature, door seal).
  • Professional Service: In case of abnormal operation (e.g., yellow burner flame, sooting, ignition failure, flame not remaining lit) or persistent issues, contact an authorized Dometic Service Center. The sealed cooling system must not be opened by unauthorized personnel due to corroding chemicals under high pressure.
