Overview

The Dynatek 6080RS Multimeter is a device designed for electrical measurements, offering both standalone operation and PC connectivity for data acquisition and analysis. It features an RS-232 interface, allowing it to communicate with a computer for real-time data display, logging, and advanced analysis through dedicated software.

Function Description

The multimeter measures various electrical parameters, including AC voltage (AC V), resistance, DC voltage (DC V), DC millivoltage (DC mV), AC current (AC A), DC current (DC A), diode, DC milliampere (DC mA), AC milliampere (AC mA), capacitance, and frequency. Its PC software provides a graphical user interface for visualizing measurements, setting up recording parameters, and managing data files.

Usage Features

Connection and Setup:

  1. Hardware Connection: Connect the 9-pin RS-232 communication cable from your computer's communication port to the 3.5 mm connector on the Dynatek 6080RS multimeter.
  2. Multimeter Activation: Switch on the multimeter from the OFF position while simultaneously pressing the REC and COMP buttons.
  3. Software Installation: Insert the 3.5-inch disk into drive A: or B: and run A:SETUP (or B:SETUP) from Windows ( ). The default installation directory is C:\RS6080, which can be changed. A program file and icon named DYNATEK will be created. No system restart is required after installation.
  4. Software Launch: Double-click the DYNATEK icon to start the program.
  5. Communication Start: In the software, switch on the preferred communication port using the mouse pointer in the left-middle of the screen. If no port is available, an error message will appear.
  6. Measurement Start: Click the START button in the communication field (left top-corner) to begin receiving digital readings with range indication (e.g., mV or Hz).

Data Acquisition and Display:

  • Sampling Time (S/Time): Adjust the sampling rate. A setting of 0 provides 4 readings/sec. Other settings, like 1 or 3 seconds, will refresh data accordingly.
  • Real-time Readings: Digital readings, along with the range indication, are displayed below the time and date.
  • REC Function: Activates three additional windows displaying MAX (maximum), MIN (minimum), and AVG (average) values over the measurement period.
  • CMP Function: Allows setting HI-limit and LO-limit values. The software displays "HI" if the upper limit is exceeded and "LO" if the lower limit is exceeded.
  • REL Function: After clicking the Edit button, a reference value can be entered. The ERROR field then displays the difference (positive or negative) from this reference.

Data Management:

  • SAVE: Click the SAVE button to store measurement output. Enter a filename (up to 8 DOS characters). Check-boxes allow recording TIME and UNITS (range) along with the readings. The Start button turns red when recording.
    • Warning: A maximum of 200 readings can be recorded. A beep will sound when this limit is reached. Press SAVE again to stop recording. New readings can be appended to an existing file by using the same filename, allowing for measurements over longer periods with different intervals.
  • LOAD: Recall saved files by pressing the LOAD button and entering the filename. Up to 200 readings will appear on the screen.
  • PRINT: Use the PRINT button to create a hardcopy of the loaded readings.

Printing:

  • RdgData Off/On: This button controls immediate printing of measured data. When "RdgData Off" is pressed, it changes to "RdgData On" (red), and printing begins. Pressing it again stops printing. The value and time are always printed, but the range indication is not.
  • Screen Hardcopy: The "Screen" button creates a hardcopy of the current screen, including graphical information.
  • Network Printing: In a network environment, printing may only start after the entire print job is spooled or completed.

Graph Screen:

  • Setup: Customize the X- and Y-axes. The Y-axis controls the range, and the X-axis controls the number of readings (280, 350, 700, or 1400). The total result depends on the S/Time setting.
  • Activation: Press the ON button to activate the graphical screen (button turns red).
  • Auto-off: The screen automatically switches off when full, and the OFF button turns red.
  • Clear: Use the CLEAR button to clear the screen and restart from the beginning with ON.

Exiting the Program:

  • Click the left upper button on the screen to exit. You will be prompted to save Default values. If confirmed, previous settings will be restored upon the next launch.

Maintenance Features

  • Software Updates: The manual states that the software will run on Windows version 3.1 and higher, implying a degree of forward compatibility, though specific update procedures are not detailed.
  • Troubleshooting Communication: If no communication port is available, an error message will appear, prompting the user to check connections or try another port.
  • Data Backup: The SAVE function allows users to store measurement data, which can be recalled and printed, serving as a form of data backup and record-keeping.
