Overview

The provided manual describes the E-flite Park 180 Brushless Outrunner motor, a component designed for electric flight models.

Function Description:

The E-flite Park 180 Brushless Outrunner motor is an electric motor intended for use in remote-controlled (RC) aircraft. It is specifically designed for 3D models weighing 2-3 oz (55-85g) and sport/scale models weighing 3-6 oz (85-170g), or any model requiring up to 30 watts of power. As an "outrunner" design, the motor's outer casing rotates around a stationary inner shaft, providing high torque and efficiency suitable for direct-drive propeller applications without the need for a gearbox. The motor is characterized by its quiet operation and lightweight design, making it an upgraded performance option for indoor motors. It features a slotted 12-pole design, ball bearings, and a hardened steel shaft for durability and smooth operation. The motor is designed for either firewall mount or carbon tube mount installations, offering flexibility in aircraft integration.

Important Technical Specifications (EFLM1120):

  • Diameter: 16mm (0.63 in)
  • Case Length: 20mm (0.80 in)
  • Weight: 8.5 g (0.30 oz)
  • Kv: 2200 (rpms per volt) – This indicates that for every volt applied, the motor will theoretically spin at 2200 RPMs under no load.
  • Io (No Load Current): 0.30A @ 8V – The current drawn by the motor when running without a load at 8 volts.
  • Ri (Resistance): 0.91 ohms – The internal resistance of the motor windings.
  • Continuous Current: 2.6A* – The maximum current the motor can sustain continuously.
  • Max Burst Current: 3.2A* – The maximum current the motor can handle for short durations.
  • Cells: 2-3S Li-Po or 4-8 Ni-MH/Ni-Cd – Compatible battery types and cell counts.
  • Recommended Props: 3x3 to 6x3 'Slow Flyer' for 2S Li-Po batteries; 4x4 to 4.5x3 for 3S Li-Po batteries.
  • Brushless ESC (Electronic Speed Control): 4A – 6A – The recommended current rating for the ESC to be used with this motor.
  • Maximum Operating Temperature: 220 degrees Fahrenheit – The highest safe operating temperature for the motor.
  • Max Burst Current Duration: 15 seconds – The maximum time the motor can operate at its burst current rating.

Usage Features:

  • Compatibility: Ideal for 3D models (2-3 oz) and sport/scale models (3-6 oz).
  • Mounting Options: Designed for firewall mount or carbon tube mount. Includes mounting hardware and 2mm gold BL connectors.
  • Quiet and Lightweight: Contributes to improved flight performance and reduced overall aircraft weight.
  • Battery Recommendations: Compatible with 2-3S Li-Po or 4-8 Ni-MH/Ni-Cd batteries. Specific E-flite or Thunder Power Li-Po batteries (e.g., 480mAh 2-Cell 7.4V LIPO, 480mAh 3-Cell 11.1V LIPO) are suggested depending on the airplane application.
  • Propeller Selection: Specific propeller sizes are recommended for 2S and 3S Li-Po setups to optimize performance.
  • ESC Requirement: Requires a sensorless brushless speed control. Using an incorrect ESC can damage the motor or ESC.
  • Motor Wire Connection: The three motor wires can be connected to the ESC in any order. If rotation is reversed, switching any two wires will correct the direction. Soldering or using gold-plated bullet connectors (EFLA248) is recommended, with proper heat shrink tubing for insulation.
  • Propeller Installation: Propellers should be installed only after confirming the correct motor rotation direction. Extreme caution is advised due to the high torque produced by the motor.
  • Cooling: Adequate cooling is crucial for all motor operation, especially at maximum current levels, to prevent overheating and potential damage.
  • Throttle Management: For 3D and limited motor run flights, proper throttle management is necessary to avoid excessive use of burst current, which can lead to overheating.

Maintenance Features:

  • Mounting Screw Length: When mounting, ensure correct screw length to prevent damage to the motor's internal components. The included mounting hardware is recommended.
  • Wire Management: Do not cut motor wires; if connectors are removed, properly de-solder them. Shortening motor wires is considered an improper modification and can cause motor failure.
  • Temperature Monitoring: Users are responsible for monitoring motor temperature during operation to prevent overheating, especially with high-capacity, high-discharge-rate batteries. Overheating due to improper use is not covered under warranty.
  • No Disassembly: Users are explicitly warned not to disassemble the motor, as doing so will void the warranty.
  • Warranty: The product comes with a 1-year limited warranty covering defects in material and workmanship from the date of purchase. This warranty is non-transferable and requires proof of purchase from an authorized Horizon dealer. It does not cover cosmetic damage, damage due to acts of God, accident, misuse, abuse, negligence, commercial use, modification, improper installation, operation, maintenance, or attempted repair by unauthorized individuals.
  • Repair/Service: For warranty claims or repairs, customers must obtain a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) from Horizon Hobby. The product should be securely packed and shipped with tracking and insurance. Non-warranty repairs are available for electronics and model engines, with costs potentially exceeding 50% of the retail purchase price requiring customer notification.
