Do you have a question about the Ebyte E870-W1 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The E870-W1 is a versatile WiFi cloud IO gateway designed for industrial applications, operating in the 2.4G frequency band. It serves as a central hub for acquiring and controlling various input/output signals, facilitating seamless communication between devices and cloud platforms.

Function Description

The E870-W1 is built upon the "Ebyte Cloud Device Communication Protocol," enabling it to receive commands from a server to perform control or acquisition tasks. It features a comprehensive set of I/O interfaces, including four digital inputs (DI), two analog inputs (AI) supporting 4-20mA signals, and two digital outputs (DO) in the form of Form A relays. This configuration allows for a wide range of monitoring and control applications.

For network communication, the device supports both TCP client and MQTT access, making it adaptable to various network architectures and cloud services. It also incorporates features like heartbeat and registration packages, which enhance connection reliability and device identification on the network.

The device's core functionality revolves around its ability to act as an edge acquisition and control RTU node. It can manage up to 20 Modbus RTU data points, enabling the collection and control of data from external Modbus devices. This capability is further enhanced by support for change reporting and periodic reporting, ensuring that data updates are delivered efficiently. The E870-W1 can also analyze Modbus command acquisition and control equipment I/O, effectively serving as an RTU device itself.

The digital outputs (DO) offer flexible operation modes, including level output and follower mode. In level output mode, the relays can be controlled directly. In follower mode, the DOs can mimic the state changes of other configured input sources (DI1-DI4, AI1-AI2, DO1-DO2), allowing for local I/O linkage and automated responses without direct server intervention. The active reporting of DO acquisition signals can be configured to report based on changes, periodically, or both, with a configurable time interval for periodic updates (1-65535 minutes).

The digital inputs (DI) support four-way dry contact acquisition. Similar to DOs, the active reporting of DI acquisition signals can be enabled or disabled and configured for change reporting, periodic updates, or a combination of both. A change in DI status triggers an immediate report, while periodic reports occur at a user-defined interval.

The analog inputs (AI) provide two channels for current signal acquisition, utilizing a high-resolution ADC for accurate readings (up to 3% accuracy). The factory default range is 0-20mA, but it can be configured for 4-20mA mode. In 4-20mA mode, currents below 3.5mA are detected as disconnection (0mA output), while currents above 3.5mA are directly output. The device supports reading collected current signals as both integer and floating-point values via Modbus RTU commands. Active reporting for AI signals can also be configured based on changes in the input range or periodically.

The network transparent transmission mode allows the E870-W1 to function as a bridge between serial devices and network servers. It supports TCP client (TCPC), UDP client (UDPC), TCP server (TCPS), and UDP server (UDPS) communication. In this mode, serial data is seamlessly transmitted to a designated server on the network, and data from the server is forwarded to the serial device, supporting four independent configurations. Users do not need to manage data conversion between serial and network packets, simplifying transparent communication.

For cloud integration, the E870-W1 supports MQTT mode, enabling connections to various cloud platforms. It can connect to Alibaba Cloud, Baidu Cloud, and OneNET Cloud using their respective "three elements" (ProductKey, DeviceName, DeviceSecret or similar authentication information). It also supports standard MQTT 3.1.1 connections, using parameters like ClientID, server address, port, username, password, and topics for publishing and subscribing. The device can be configured to publish messages at different quality of service (QoS) levels.

Usage Features

The E870-W1 offers multiple configuration methods, including a host computer application, a web platform, and AT commands. This flexibility allows users to choose the most convenient method for setup and management.

One of its key usage features is edge acquisition, which supports collecting data from up to 20 external data points. These data points can be established via the host computer or Ebyte cloud device communication protocol. The device can then automatically convert JSON commands from the server into Modbus commands for setting or reading data points, reporting the return values in JSON format. Data points can be configured to poll and read every second, and if set for change reporting, they will actively report their status or value upon detection of a change.

The device supports registration packages in network transparent transmission mode. This allows the device to send an identification packet to the server upon connection, serving as a data source identifier or a password for server function authorization. The registration package can include ICCID, IMEI, CSQ value, FW version information, or custom ASCII data (up to 64 bytes).

Heartbeat packets are also supported in network transparent transmission mode. These packets are sent to the network to maintain an active connection with the server, preventing idle devices from being disconnected. Heartbeat packets can also include ICCID, IMEI, CSQ value, FW version information, or custom ASCII data.

The E870-W1 supports multi-link edge acquisition, and for Modbus communication, it automatically adds CRC checks, ensuring data integrity. It also supports adding edge computing formulas for uplink and downlink data, allowing for local data processing. Device linkage is a powerful feature that enables automated interactions between different I/O points based on predefined rules.

Maintenance Features

The E870-W1 is designed with industrial-grade standards to ensure high reliability. For maintenance and updates, it supports firmware upgrades via a serial port using the Ebyte serial port upgrade tool.

A hardware factory reset function is available to restore the device to its default parameters. This is achieved by pressing and holding the "Reload" button for 5-10 seconds after power-on until all LEDs illuminate (LINKA&LNNKB flash, others steady on), then releasing the button. The device will automatically restart with factory settings. A short press of the "Reload" button performs a restart operation.

LED indicators provide visual feedback on the device's status:

  • PWR (red): Always on when powered, indicating power status.
  • STA (green):
    • Off: Searching for SIM card.
    • Slow flashing (1000ms off, 200ms on): Correct SIM card found, network attaching.
    • Fast flashing (200ms off, 200ms on): Attached to network, connecting to server.
    • Steady on: Connected to the server.
  • DATA (yellow): Blinking when the server communicates with serial port data.

These indicators aid in quick troubleshooting and monitoring of the device's operational state. The device also supports remote management via the Ebyte cloud platform, allowing for configuration and monitoring from a centralized location.
