Overview

This document describes a front-load dryer, providing comprehensive instructions for its operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. The dryer is designed for household use, offering various cycles and settings to accommodate different fabric types and drying needs while also incorporating features for energy efficiency and user convenience.

Function Description

The primary function of this appliance is to dry clothes and other washable items. It operates as either a 240V electric dryer or a 120V gas dryer, utilizing heated air and a tumbling drum to remove moisture from laundry. The dryer features a front-mounted moisture sensor that detects the moisture level in the load, allowing Auto Dry cycles to automatically adjust drying time and temperature for optimal results and to prevent over-drying.

The dryer offers a range of drying cycles, including:

  • Auto Dry Cycles: These cycles use moisture sensors to determine the appropriate drying time and temperature. Examples include "normal" for everyday fabrics, "towels" for heavy loads, "mixed load" for various fabrics, "heavy duty" for durable items, "allergen" for reducing allergens, "casual" for wrinkle-free items, and "delicates" for knits and delicate fabrics.
  • Time Dry Cycles: These cycles allow manual selection of drying time, useful for small or almost-dry loads, or for items that should not be tumble-dried with heat. Specific options include "20min fast dry" (400 series), "18min fast dry" (500 series), and "15min fast dry" (600 series) for quick drying of small loads.
  • Instant Refresh: This cycle uses steam to refresh fabrics, remove odors, and reduce static in clothes that have been left in the dryer or stored.

Temperature settings can be adjusted for each cycle, with options like "sanitize" (on select models) for killing bacteria, "high" for most cottons, "normal" for wrinkle-free and easy-care fabrics, "low" for delicates, and "air dry" (no heat) for items containing feathers, foam rubber, or plastics. Dryness levels for Auto Dry cycles can also be adjusted, with options like "max" (on select models), "high," "normal," "less," and "damp" for partial drying.

The dryer also includes several options to enhance drying performance and user experience:

  • Perfect Steam™: Injects steam to reduce wrinkles, aid ironing, and minimize static.
  • Anti-Static (on select models): Reduces static cling just before cycle completion.
  • Wrinkle Release: Tumbles the dry load without heat for 45 minutes to prevent wrinkles and tangling. This can be extended up to 75 minutes with the "extended tumble" option.
  • Extended Tumble (on select models): Continues tumbling without heat for 30 minutes after the cycle ends to prevent wrinkles if the load isn't removed immediately.
  • Delay Start: Allows users to delay the start of a cycle for 30 minutes to 12 hours, useful for off-peak energy hours or convenience.
  • Lock: Locks the controls to prevent accidental operation, especially by children.
  • Eco: Reduces drying temperature slightly to save energy, increasing cycle times but decreasing overall energy usage.

Usage Features

The dryer is designed for ease of use with a clear LED display and a cycle selector (ring or buttons depending on the model). The display shows estimated drying time for Auto Dry cycles or actual time for Time Dry cycles, along with cycle phase indicators.

Key usage steps include:

  1. Preparation: Sorting items by fabric type, weight, and construction. Checking for stains, closing zippers, fastening hooks, and tying strings to prevent snagging. Placing delicate or small items in a mesh bag.
  2. Lint Filter Check: Ensuring the lint filter is clean and in place before each load.
  3. Loading: Loading items loosely, filling the drum 1/3 to 1/2 full for even drying and less wrinkling. For large items, drying only two or three at a time and supplementing with smaller items. For delicate or very small loads, adding larger items to improve tumbling.
  4. Cycle Selection: Turning on the unit, then selecting the desired cycle using the cycle selector. The display will show the estimated drying time and automatically suggest temperature and dryness levels. These can be adjusted using dedicated buttons.
  5. Starting the Cycle: Closing the door and pressing "start." The dryer will not operate with the door open.
  6. Adding Items: Pressing "pause," opening the door, adding the item, closing the door, and pressing "start" to resume.
  7. Changing Settings Mid-Cycle: Pressing "pause," making new selections, and pressing "start" again.
  8. Changing Cycle Mid-Cycle: Pressing "cancel," selecting a new cycle, and pressing "start" again.
  9. End of Cycle: A signal will sound if the chime option is selected. Removing items immediately to prevent wrinkles.

The dryer also features a drum light that illuminates when the door is opened for easy loading and unloading, turning off automatically after 3 minutes or when the door is closed. The door is reversible, allowing it to be hinged on either the right or left side to suit the laundry room layout.

For items that should not be tumble-dried, a drying rack (on select models, or available as an accessory) can be inserted into the drum. This rack allows items to dry flat, preventing damage from tumbling. It is recommended for use with time dry cycles and the "air dry" setting.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the dryer's efficiency and longevity, as well as for safety. Key maintenance tasks include:

  • Lint Filter Cleaning: The lint filter must be cleaned after every load. The "CLEAN LINT" reminder will be displayed at the end of each cycle. A waxy build-up on the filter can be removed by washing it with warm, soapy water.
  • Drum Interior Cleaning: If the drum becomes stained from non-colorfast fabrics, it can be cleaned with a damp cloth and a mild liquid household cleanser. Residue should be removed before drying the next load. Spray cleansers should not be used inside the dryer.
  • Cabinet Cleaning: The exterior cabinet can be cleaned with mild soap and water. Harsh, gritty, or abrasive cleansers should be avoided. Diluted chlorine bleach can be used for stains, followed by rinsing. Glue residue from tape or labels can be removed with warm water and mild detergent or by using the sticky side of the tape itself. Chrome parts should be cleaned with a damp cloth.
  • Professional Servicing: Every 18 months, a qualified service person should clean the dryer cabinet interior, lint screen housing, and exhaust duct to prevent excessive lint build-up, which can lead to inefficient drying and fire hazards.
  • Exhaust System Inspection: The outdoor exhaust opening and surrounding area should be regularly inspected to remove any accumulation of lint. The exhaust duct itself must be at least 4 inches in diameter, made of rigid or semi-rigid metal, and should not have more than four 90° bends. Any obstructions in the exhaust hood or duct should be cleared.

The manual also provides a comprehensive troubleshooting guide for common drying inquiries, addressing issues like greasy stains, lint, pilling, shrinking, wrinkling, isolated wet spots after steam cycles, and the dryer not starting or heating. This guide helps users identify possible causes and solutions, often preventing the need for service calls. For instance, it advises on proper load size, use of fabric softeners, and checking water line pressure for steam cycles.
