Overview

This document provides comprehensive instructions for the EMS 2487 microwave oven, covering its functions, installation, operation, maintenance, and guarantee conditions.

Function Description:

The EMS 2487 is a microwave oven designed for domestic use, specifically for defrosting, heating, and cooking food. It offers various cooking modes including:

  • Microwave Cooking: Utilizes microwave energy to heat and cook food.
  • Grilling: Employs a grill function for toasting and browning, suitable for items like cutlets, sausages, and hamburgers.
  • Combined Microwave & Grill Cooking: Combines the speed of microwave cooking with the browning and crisping benefits of a grill.
  • Automatic Programmes: Features pre-set programmes for specific food categories, including fresh vegetables (I and II), frozen vegetables, chicken, pork roast, and gratin. These programmes simplify cooking by automatically calculating times and power levels based on food weight.
  • Auto Defrost: An automatic defrosting function for various food types.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Microwave Power Output: 900W. This is indicated by the "900W" label and the "E" heating category symbol, as agreed by MAFF (Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food) in conjunction with microwave oven manufacturers for food packs up to 500g/1lb.
  • Electrical Connection: 230-240 V, 50Hz, earthed socket outlet. The appliance complies with E.E.C. directive No. 87/308 of 2.6.87 for radio interference suppression.
  • Grill Maximum Setting: 60 minutes.

Usage Features:

  • Control Panel: The appliance features a control panel with a multifunction button and a Timer knob for setting time and adjusting settings.
  • Display: An LED display shows the time of day, cooking time, and programme settings.
  • Clock Setting: The clock can be set by pressing the multifunction button and turning the Timer knob. The display flashes "00:00" initially, and the dots between the digits indicate the setting mode (rapid flash for initial setting, slower flash for normal operation).
  • Quick Start Function: Provides full microwave power for durations from 30 seconds up to 2 minutes and 30 seconds, in 30-second intervals. This is activated by pressing the Start/Quick button.
  • Child Lock: A safety feature to prevent accidental operation by children. It is activated by pressing the Clear button five times, followed by the Start button. The display shows "LOC" when activated. It is deactivated by repeating the same sequence.
  • Minute Timer with Alarm: Can be used as a general-purpose reminder without selecting a cooking function. It is set by turning the Power knob to "0" (grill off), setting the time with the Timer knob, and pressing the Start button. An audible signal sounds when the timer finishes.
  • Turntable: The appliance operates with a turntable and turntable support, which must be properly inserted. The turntable rotates clockwise or anti-clockwise during operation. Manual rotation should be avoided to prevent damage to the drive system.
  • Rack: A rack is provided for use with the grill function to brown shallow dishes, positioned on the centre of the turntable.
  • Cookware Suitability: A detailed table outlines the suitability of various ovenware materials (glass, ceramic, plastic, paper, metal) for microwave, grill, and combination modes. It specifies that metal parts, silver, gold, platinum, or metal decorations are generally unsuitable for microwave use. Heat-resistant plastic up to 200°C is suitable for microwave and combination cooking, but users should check the manufacturer's maximum temperature.
  • Cooking Guidelines:
    • Microwave Hints: Provides general advice for microwave cooking.
    • Defrosting Charts: Detailed tables for defrosting various foods, including bread, pastry, melting foods (chocolate, butter), and refrigerated food/drink. These tables specify weight, power (Watt), duration (min), and standing time (min), along with remarks and hints.
    • Cooking Vegetables: Guidelines for cooking vegetables.
    • Cooking Fish: Guidelines for cooking fish.
    • Grilling Table: Specific instructions for grilling fish (mackerel, sardines), meat (sausages, frozen chopped meat, rumpsteaks), and other items (toast, snacks), including weight, accessories (rack), grill time, and grill level. It advises preheating the oven for 2½ minutes for some items and turning food once or more often depending on its shape.
    • Combined Microwave & Grilling Table: Instructions for combination cooking dishes like noodle casserole, potatoes au gratin, lasagne, meatloaf, and onion soup au gratin. It specifies weight, shelf level (turntable), power (Watt), grill time, and grill level.
    • Automatic Programme Usage: For automatic programmes, users input the food category and weight. The oven calculates the cooking time. For dishes over 500g, stirring or turning halfway through is often recommended. Water amounts are specified for cooking fresh and frozen vegetables.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning:
    • Exterior: Wipe the front of the oven with a damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaning agents. For stainless steel fronts, use a suitable cleaning agent that leaves a protective film.
    • Interior: Wipe the cooking space with a soft, damp cloth.
    • Accessories: Remove and wash the turntable and turntable support in warm water with washing-up liquid.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual includes a section "If the microwave does not function" to help diagnose common issues. It covers problems such as the appliance not working, microwave mode not working, turntable not turning, error codes ("-d1-", "-d2-", "-d3-") appearing (indicating the oven is too hot from grilling), the microwave not switching off, interior light not working, and food taking longer to heat/cook. For most issues, it advises checking fuses, door closure, door seals, and contacting an ELECTROLUX Service Force Centre if problems persist.
  • Service and Spare Parts: Users are directed to contact an ELECTROLUX Service Force Centre for repairs and spare parts. Only qualified personnel should perform repairs, especially those involving removal of covers protecting from microwave energy. Damaged parts should only be replaced with identical parts.
  • Interior Light Bulb: The interior light bulb can only be exchanged by trained ELECTROLUX technicians.

Guarantee Conditions:

  • Standard Guarantee (UK): Covers defects due to faulty workmanship or materials for 12 months from the purchase date. Conditions include correct installation, domestic use, adherence to manufacturer's instructions, and service by an ELECTROLUX service centre. Exclusions include damage from transportation, improper use, neglect, replacement of light bulbs or removable glass/plastic parts, commercial use, and products not marketed by Electrolux.
  • European Guarantee: Allows the guarantee to transfer to another European country if the user moves, subject to conditions such as the guarantee starting from the original purchase date, having the same period and extent as in the new country, being non-transferable, the new home being within the EC or European Free Trade Area, and the product being installed and used according to instructions and local regulations. Contacting the nearest Customer Care centre before moving is advised.
