Do you have a question about the Elma BM126 and is the answer not in the manual?
This document serves as a user manual for the Elma 3036, Elma 3038, and Elma BM126 clamp-on multimeters. It provides information on safety, product description, operation, and maintenance.
The instruments are designed and manufactured to Safety Class II according to international standards IEC 61010-1 (Installation Category III) and IEC 61010-2-032 (1994), EN 61010-2-032 (1995), and UL 3111-2-032 (1999) for double insulation.
WARNING: Indicates conditions and actions that could result in serious injury or death to the user. CAUTION: Identifies conditions and actions that could cause damage or malfunction in the instrument.
To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not expose the product to rain or moisture. The meter is intended only for indoor use. Observe proper safety precautions when working with voltages above 60 VDC or 30 VAC rms. Inspect test leads, connectors, and probes for damaged insulation or exposed metal before use. Do not touch test lead tips or the circuit being tested while power is applied. Keep hands/fingers behind the hand/finger barriers during measurement. Disconnect test leads from test points before changing meter functions.
! (triangle with exclamation mark): Caution! Refer to the explanation in this Manual.! (triangle with lightning bolt): Caution! Risk of electric shock.⏚: Earth (Ground).□: Double Insulation or Reinforced insulation.⎓: DC—Direct Current.∼: AC—Alternating Current.⏚: Fuse.Cenelec Directives: The instruments conform to CENELEC Low-voltage directive 73/23/EEC and Electromagnetic compatibility directive 89/336/EEC.
The clamp-on multimeters feature:
Inputs are made through the test leads terminals. The slide-switch defaults to DC voltage. Press the SELECT button momentarily to select AC voltage. Press the Hz push-button momentarily to activate the Hz Frequency function.
Note: The DC 400.0mV range has a 1000MΩ high input impedance, suitable for measuring small signals. Non-zero readings with open inputs are normal and do not affect accuracy. Hz input sensitivity varies automatically with the selected function range.
Inputs are made through the test leads terminals. The slide-switch defaults to Ω. Press the SELECT button momentarily to select the Continuity function. A continuous beep tone indicates a complete wire.
Inputs are made through the test leads terminals. The slide-switch defaults to Ω. Press the SELECT button momentarily 2 times to select the Diode test function. Normal forward voltage drop for a good silicon diode is between 0.400V to 0.900V. A higher reading indicates a leaky diode, zero indicates a shorted diode, and OL indicates an open diode. Reversing test leads (reverse biased) should show OL for a good diode.
Inputs are made through the test leads terminals. The slide-switch defaults to Ω. Press the SELECT button momentarily 3 times to select the Capacitance function. The Relative Zero (Δ) mode (BM111 & BM112 only) can be used to zero out parasitic capacitance of leads and internal circuitry when measuring low capacitance (pF). CAUTION: Discharge capacitors before making any measurement.
Inputs are made through the clamp jaws for non-invasive ACA current measurements.
Insert the banana plug type-K temperature bead probe Bkp60 with correct polarities. Slide-switch defaults to °C. Press the SELECT button momentarily to select °F. A plug adapter Bkb32 (optional) can be used for other type-K standard mini plug temperature probes.
Inputs are made through the test leads terminals. Slide-switch defaults to DC. Press the SELECT button momentarily to select AC. This function is designed for HVAC/R flame sensor applications, with 0.1µA resolution for identifying minute current changes.
Freezes the display for later viewing. Press the HOLD button momentarily to activate and exit.
Compares and displays the measured maximum value as fast as 30ms with auto-ranging capability. Press the MAX button for 1 second or more to activate and exit.
Allows the user to offset consecutive measurements with the displayed reading as the reference value. Press the Δ button momentarily to activate and exit.
The meter automatically switches to the best resolution range when making measurements. No manual ranging selection is required.
Switches the meter into sleep mode after approximately 30 minutes of no activity to extend battery life. To wake up, press any button or set the slide-switch to OFF and then back on. Always set the slide-switch to OFF when not in use.
WARNING: To avoid electrical shock, disconnect the meter from any circuit, remove test leads, and turn OFF the meter before opening the case. Do not operate with an open case.
Trouble Shooting: If the instrument fails to operate, check batteries and test leads. If the voltage-resistance input terminal has been subjected to high voltage transient, the series fusible resistors will be blown off to protect the user and instrument. These resistors and spark gaps should be replaced by a qualified technician.
Cleaning and Storage: Periodically wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Remove batteries if the meter is not used for periods longer than 60 days.
Battery and Fuse replacement: The meters use standard 1.5V alkaline button batteries (IEC/JIS LR44, GAP76, or V13GA).
Max Hold (Where Applicable): Specified accuracy ± 50 digits for changes > 25ms in duration.
Audible Continuity Tester: Audible threshold: between 20ohm and 120ohm.
Type-K Temperature (BM126 only) (*Type-K thermocouple range & accuracy not included):
