Overview

The Emerald Energy Refrigerant Cycling Heat Pump Water Heater is a device designed for efficient water heating in both residential and commercial settings. It utilizes a refrigerant cycling heat pump system to extract heat from the ambient air and transfer it to the water in the storage tank, offering an energy-efficient alternative to traditional water heaters.

Function Description

The core function of this device is to heat water using a heat pump mechanism. It consists of an outdoor unit (ODU) and an indoor water tank unit. The outdoor unit contains the compressor, fan, and air-side heat exchanger, which are responsible for absorbing heat from the surrounding environment. This heat is then transferred via refrigerant piping to the water tank, where it heats the domestic water supply. The system is designed to operate within a wide range of ambient temperatures, making it suitable for various climates.

For enhanced heating capabilities, especially in colder conditions or when a higher volume of hot water is required, the water heater can be equipped with an electric auxiliary heater. This auxiliary heat function ensures a consistent supply of hot water even when the heat pump alone might not be sufficient. The system also incorporates a temperature pressure safety valve (TPR valve) to ensure safe operation by releasing pressure if it exceeds a certain limit, preventing potential hazards.

The device is designed for permanent connection to the water mains and is not intended for use with a hose-set. It includes features like a water tank temperature sensor to monitor and regulate water temperature, and various valves (stop valve, water mixing valve, safety valve) for control and safety during operation and maintenance.

Usage Features

The heat pump water heater offers several user-friendly features and operational characteristics:

  • Temperature Control: The water tank temperature can be set by the user, typically within a range of 20°C to 60°C, allowing for customization based on household or commercial needs.
  • Protection Mechanisms: The unit is equipped with multiple protection devices. These include a 3-minute protection delay for the compressor upon restart after a short shutdown, which helps prolong the compressor's lifespan. During heating operation, if frost accumulates on the outdoor unit, a defrosting function automatically activates to maintain heating efficiency. The system also has a protection device that activates and stops the unit if there is a blockage of the air inlet or outlet, or if the voltage deviates significantly from the normal range.
  • Error Code Display: In case of failures or protection mode activations, the control panel displays relevant error codes, allowing for quick identification of issues. If multiple issues occur, they are displayed in sequence.
  • Quiet Operation: During normal operation, especially when the outdoor temperature is higher, the fan motor may run at a low air volume or even stop, contributing to quieter performance.
  • Residual Current Circuit Breaker (RCCB): The outdoor unit requires an RCCB to be installed between the user's power supply and the unit, enhancing electrical safety. Users are advised to check the RCCB switches if the unit fails to function without a power failure.
  • Pre-running Checks: Before initial startup or after prolonged downtime, it is recommended to turn on the power supply switch for 12 hours to ensure proper grounding and system readiness. It is also normal to observe rust-tinged water flowing from the tap after prolonged disuse, which is not a malfunction.
  • Installation Flexibility: The manual provides guidelines for installation space for both the outdoor unit and the water tank, allowing for placement in various locations such as balconies, corners, basements, or open spaces, while ensuring adequate air circulation and maintenance access.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is crucial for the longevity and efficient operation of the heat pump water heater. The manual outlines several key maintenance aspects:

  • Professional Servicing: All installation, repair, and maintenance tasks must be performed by a licensed or certified technician. This ensures that the work is carried out safely and correctly, adhering to manufacturer instructions and local regulations.
  • Leakage Inspections: For equipment containing fluorinated greenhouse gases, regular leak inspections are required. The frequency of these inspections depends on the CO2 equivalent charge, ranging from annually to every three months, with less frequent checks if a leakage detection system is installed.
  • PTR Valve Check: The temperature pressure safety valve (PTR valve) should be checked every six months to ensure it is not restricted. This is a critical safety component, and any continuous leakage from it may indicate a problem with the water heater.
  • Anode Material Inspection: It is recommended to inspect the anode material in the water tank every six months and replace it if it is exhausted. The anode helps protect the tank from corrosion.
  • Water Quality Limitations: The manual provides specific water quality parameters (pH value, total hardness, electrical conductivity, various ion levels) that the water supply should meet. If the water quality does not meet these requirements, users are advised to contact the supplier for guidance, as poor water quality can affect the unit's performance and lifespan.
  • Cleaning and Obstruction Checks: Users should regularly check and clean the air inlet and outlet of the unit to ensure they are not obstructed, as blockages can reduce heating performance.
  • Draining for Extended Downtime: If the heater is to be left unused for an extended period, it is recommended to empty the water from the tank and pipes and close all valve bodies to prevent issues like freezing or stagnation.
  • Electrical Safety Checks: Before operating, all wiring should be thoroughly checked, and the unit must be reliably grounded. The power supply cords and signal wires should be arranged properly, separated from strong current wires and connection pipes/valves.
  • Refrigerant Information: The product contains fluorinated gas (R134a) with a specified Global Warming Potential (GWP), and it is emphasized that this gas must not be released into the air. Only certified technicians are authorized to handle refrigerant-related tasks.
