regulators must be installed,
operated, and maintained in accordance
with federal, state, and local codes,
rules and regulations, and Emerson
Process Management Regulator
Technologies, Inc. instructions.
For LP-Gas service, an approved
regulator (such as one listed by UL)
should be used or approved by the
Authority Having Jurisdiction. The
installation in most states, must comply
with NFPA 58 standard.
If the regulator vents gas or a leak
develops in the system, service to the unit
may be required. Failure to correct trouble
could result in a hazardous condition.
Call a gas service person to service
the unit. Only a qualied person must
install or service the regulator.

Overview

The Type R622 is a direct-operated, spring-loaded pressure reducing regulator designed for economical pressure reducing control in residential, commercial, and industrial applications. It is suitable for use with natural, manufactured, or liquefied petroleum gases and offers consistent inlet and outlet pressure capabilities.

Function Description:

The regulator operates by sensing downstream demand. When demand decreases, pressure under the diaphragm increases, overcoming the regulator's spring setting. This action, through the pusher post assembly, lever, and valve stem, moves the valve disk closer to the orifice, reducing gas flow. Conversely, when downstream demand increases, pressure under the diaphragm decreases, allowing the spring force to push the pusher post assembly downward, moving the valve disk away from the orifice and increasing gas flow.

A key feature of the Type R622 is its internal relief valve, which helps minimize overpressure. If outlet pressure exceeds the non-adjustable relief valve spring's start-to-discharge point, the diaphragm moves off the relief valve seat, allowing excess pressure to bleed out through the screened spring case vent.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Body Size and End Connection Style: 1/2 NPT
  • Orifice Size: 1/8-inch (3.2 mm)
  • Pressure Registration: Internal
  • Maximum Allowable Inlet Pressure:
    • Operating: 125 psig (8.62 bar)
    • Emergency: 125 psig (8.62 bar)
    • Exception: For 1.8 to 2.2-inches w.c. (4 to 5 mbar) spring range, operating and emergency pressures are 60 psig (4.14 bar).
  • Maximum Allowable Outlet (Casing) Pressure:
    • Operating to Avoid Internal Part Damage: 3 psid (0.21 bar d) above outlet pressure setting
    • Emergency: 20 psi (1.38 bar)
  • Outlet Pressure Ranges: Refer to Table 1 for specific ranges, which include:
    • 1.8 to 2.2-inches w.c. (4 to 5 mbar)
    • 5 to 7-inches w.c. (12 to 17 mbar)
    • 6.5 to 9-inches w.c. (16 to 22 mbar)
    • 9 to 13-inches w.c. (22 to 32 mbar)
    • 13 to 20-inches w.c. (32 to 48 mbar)
    • 16 to 35-inches w.c. (40 to 87 mbar)
    • 1 to 2.2 psig (69 to 152 mbar)
  • Flow Coefficients:
    • Wide-Open Cg for Relief Sizing: 12.5
    • Wide-Open Cv for Relief Sizing: 0.36
    • C1: 35
  • IEC Sizing Coefficients:
    • Xgz: 0.78
    • FD: 0.82
    • FL: 0.89
  • Internal Relief Performance:
    • Start-to-Discharge: 8 to 22-inches w.c. (20 to 55 mbar) for setpoints from 1.8 to 20-inches w.c. (4 to 50 mbar)
    • Start-to-Discharge: 140 to 200% over setpoint from 20-inches w.c. to 2.2 psig (50 to 152 mbar)
  • Spring Case Vent Connection: 3/4 NPT with removable screen
  • Maximum Temperature Capabilities: -20° to 160°F (-29° to 71°C)
  • Approximate Weight: 2.35 pounds (1 kg)

Usage Features:

  • Installation Flexibility: The diaphragm actuator assembly can be rotated to any position relative to the body in 90° increments, allowing for adaptable installation. The regulator should be installed with the flow direction matching the arrow cast on the body.
  • Vent Protection: The spring case vent is screened to prevent insects or foreign material from entering. For indoor installations, the vent should be piped outside the building to a remote, safe location, protected against condensation or clogging. A weather and insect resistant vent assembly, such as a Type Y602, is recommended for the outdoor end of the pipe.
  • Overpressure Protection: The internal relief mechanism helps limit total outlet pressure build-up. However, additional pressure relief or limiting devices may be necessary downstream if actual inlet pressure can exceed the outlet pressure rating, to prevent damage or hazardous conditions.
  • Adjustability: Outlet pressure settings can be adjusted by turning the adjusting screw (clockwise to increase, counterclockwise to decrease) after removing the closing cap. A pressure gauge must be used to monitor downstream pressure during adjustments. If the required pressure setting is outside the range of the installed spring, the spring must be replaced with the correct one from Table 1.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Inspection: A program of regular inspection for the vent opening is recommended to ensure it is not plugged by foreign material. Periodic checks for external or internal corrosion are also advised.
  • Diaphragm and Disk Replacement: The manual provides detailed steps for replacing the diaphragm and valve disk. This involves removing the closing cap, adjusting screw, spring case, control spring, and then carefully detaching the diaphragm assembly. The disk can then be removed from the stem assembly.
  • Inlet Screen and Orifice Replacement: Instructions are provided for removing and replacing the inlet screen and orifice. This includes removing the regulator from the line, disassembling the inlet fitting, and then replacing or cleaning the components. Lubrication of O-rings and external threads of the new orifice is specified for reassembly.
  • Parts Ordering: To facilitate parts ordering, the type number, orifice size, spring range, and date of manufacture are located on the spring case. This information, along with any construction changes made in the field, should be provided to local Sales Offices for accurate replacement parts or technical assistance. A comprehensive parts list with key descriptions and part numbers is included.
