Overview

The KTM Powder Discharge System (PDS) Metaltite® Ball Valves are designed for ON-OFF powder service, suitable for applications involving materials such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and hydrocarbon vapor. These valves are engineered to provide reliable performance in demanding industrial environments where the handling of powders is critical.

Function Description

The core function of the KTM PDS Metaltite® Ball Valve is to control the flow of powder materials in a piping system. It operates on an ON-OFF principle, meaning it is designed to be either fully open to allow maximum flow or fully closed to completely stop the flow. The "Metaltite®" designation refers to the valve's specialized metal seat design, which provides enhanced sealing capabilities and durability, particularly important in abrasive powder applications. The trunnion-type ball valve construction ensures robust support for the ball, reducing friction and wear, and contributing to a longer service life. The valve's design aims to prevent jamming due to solids or slurry in the fluid, a common issue in powder handling, and to minimize fluid sticking to the ball and seats.

Usage Features

The KTM PDS Metaltite® Ball Valves are designed for versatile installation and operation. They can be installed on pipes at various angles—horizontally, vertically, or any other direction—though considering ease of maintenance and handling is recommended. The valves are delivered with the ball in a full-open position for storage, which is crucial to prevent seat leakage over extended periods. For operation, the valve adjustment is performed either through a lever handle or a gear mechanism. Turning the stem clockwise typically shuts the valve. The open or closed position of the valve is indicated by parallel flats on the top of the stem for lever-operated valves, and by an arrow indicator for gear-operated valves.

The valves are designed to be bi-directional, meaning they can seal effectively regardless of the flow direction. However, their sealing function in a closed position excels for positive pressure direction, specifically from the Body Cap side to the Body side direction. Therefore, it is generally recommended to install the valve with the Body Cap facing the high-pressure side when the valve is closed.

Safety is a paramount consideration in the usage of these valves. Operators are advised to adopt a stable posture when operating the valve and to ensure that the handle is securely fastened. Insufficient insertion or forced operation of the handle can lead to damage or injury if the handle slips. Excessive handle operation should be avoided as it can break the lever, injure the operator, or deform the stopper or stem, potentially leading to seat leakage. When handling fluids at high temperatures, caution is necessary to prevent burn injuries.

For gear-operated valves, an adjustment screw allows for calibration if the indicator does not accurately reflect the valve's open or shut position. This ensures precise control over the powder flow.

Maintenance Features

Regular checks and maintenance are essential to ensure a long and reliable service life for the KTM PDS Metaltite® Ball Valves. The manual provides detailed instructions for storage, transportation, installation, operation, and troubleshooting, all contributing to effective maintenance.

Before installation, the valves should be stored in a clean, dry warehouse with the ball in an open position and end flanges protected by seal discs. Bore protection covers should remain in place until installation to prevent rust and contamination. Periodical checks during storage are necessary to verify these conditions. For extended storage, desiccant bags, if supplied, should be changed every six months.

During installation, it is crucial to ensure that no solid objects or packing materials are present within the valve or on the valve seat. Flushing pipes before installation is recommended, or the installed valve must be in an open position during flushing. The ball should remain in an open position during installation to prevent damage to the seat rings. Flange bolts must be tightened using a "crisscross" pattern to avoid uneven stress on lined pipes, which can cause damage or excessive operation torque.

When conducting a pressure test of the pipe system, the valves should be in a partially open position to prevent excessive load on the seats and potential leakage. After testing, the valves should be returned to a fully open/closed position. If water is used for testing and the system is shut down for a long time, a corrosion inhibitor should be used, and the test water completely drained to prevent residue that could damage sealing surfaces.

Maintenance also addresses potential issues like gland packing leakage and body/body cap sealing. If leakage is observed through the gland packing, the gland bolts should be tightened slowly and evenly until the leakage stops, without over-tightening to avoid increased operating torque. This procedure should be performed every 3,000 operation cycles or every six months. If heat cycles are expected to loosen the gland packing, screws should be retightened every two months or every 1,000 operational cycles. For slight leakage between the body and body cap, the fastening bolts should be moderately tightened.

Troubleshooting guidance is provided for common issues such as unsmooth operation, outside leakage, and seat leakage. Measures include cleaning the inside of the valve, replacing parts like the ball, seats, stem bearing, or thrust bearing, and taking steps to prevent abnormal pressure rises in the pipe. For sealing performance issues, tightening fastening nuts or bolts at the gasket and gland packing, or replacing these components, is recommended.

Disassembly of the valves for maintenance or repair must be performed in a clean, well-lit, and well-ventilated area. Before removal from piping, the system must be fully depressurized and drained of any dangerous fluids. The valve should be half-open during removal to release any remaining pressure in the cavity. It is also critical to ensure the valve has been decontaminated of any harmful gases or fluids. Maintenance personnel must be qualified and ensure a stable position for the heavy valve to prevent it from falling.
