The IRB-RET2 retroreflective, infrared photoeye is an external entrapment protection device type B1, non-

contact sensor for use with automatic gates and doors. The reflector directs the beam back to the

photoeye, therefore wiring to the other side of the roadway is not needed. The IRB-RET2 is compatible

with most operators that accommodate monitored external entrapment devices per UL325. (six

monitoring methods are available) The IRB-RET2 operates up to 60 feet over a wide range of voltages (6-

40 VDC and 12-24 VAC). A red alignment indicator on the receiver provides easy set-up and alignment.

The EMX IRB-RET2 is a universal UL325 compliant retroreflective photoeye designed for use in gate and door operator applications. This device functions as a safety sensor, detecting obstructions in the path of a gate or door and preventing potential accidents. Its retroreflective design means that the transmitter and receiver are housed in a single unit, with a separate reflector used to bounce the infrared beam back to the photoeye. This simplifies installation compared to through-beam photoeyes which require separate transmitter and receiver units.

Function Description:

The IRB-RET2 operates by emitting an infrared beam that is reflected back by a retroreflective target. If an object breaks this beam, the photoeye signals the gate or door operator to stop or reverse, thereby preventing contact with the obstruction. The device is designed to be highly reliable and offers continuous monitoring of all safety devices connected to the gate and door operators, as required by UL325 standards. It supports various wiring configurations including normally closed, 10K resistive termination, normally closed power cycle transmitter only, two-wire pulse (2 and 3 frequency), and four-wire pulse (2 and 3 frequency). The device features sensitivity adjustment to fine-tune its detection range and prevent false triggers. It also incorporates a "Stealth Mode" feature, which allows the LEDs to turn off after 30 seconds when the photoeye is powered and aligned, reducing visible light output.

Usage Features:

The IRB-RET2 offers flexible installation options, including flat surface mounting and curved surface (pole) mounting. A universal mounting bracket is provided for easy installation. The device includes a sensitivity adjustment potentiometer, allowing installers to set the detection range from 5-20 ft, 20-30 ft, or 30-60 ft. This helps optimize performance for different gate or door widths and environmental conditions. The photoeye features LED indicators (Green LED and Red LED) to provide visual feedback on its status, including alignment, beam obstruction, and power. A solid red LED indicates proper alignment, while a flashing red LED indicates better alignment. The wiring enclosure is designed to be watertight, featuring a UL listed watertight fitting such as a strain relief or ½ inch NPT thread watertight conduit connector.

Maintenance Features:

The LED indicators assist in troubleshooting, with specific patterns indicating different issues such as signal reflection problems, low sensitivity, misalignment, or faulty connections. For instance, if the Red LED flashes continuously, it suggests that the sensitivity is too low and needs adjustment. If the Green LED is not on when powered, it could indicate incorrect DIP switch settings or a wiring issue. The device's robust design, including surge protection, contributes to its longevity and reduces the need for frequent repairs. The back cover is designed to be easily removed for wiring and adjustments, and a gasket ensures a watertight seal when reinstalled.
