Overview

The Eterna SDION is a mains ionisation smoke detector with battery back-up and a "Hush" feature, designed for residential use. It is intended for permanent connection to fixed wiring and can be interconnected with up to 40 other smoke alarms of the same make and type over a distance of 150 meters. This interconnectivity ensures that if one alarm is activated, all connected alarms will sound, providing comprehensive coverage.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Eterna SDION is to detect smoke and alert occupants with a loud pulsating alarm. As an ionisation smoke detector, it is particularly effective at detecting fast-flaming fires. The device operates on a 220-240Vac~ 50-60Hz mains supply and includes a 9V battery back-up to ensure continuous operation in the event of a power failure. The battery back-up provides at least 1 year of operation during a mains supply interruption.

A key feature is the "Hush" function, which allows users to temporarily silence the alarm for 10 minutes if it is triggered by non-hazardous sources like cooking fumes or steam. This is activated by pressing and holding the test button for a few seconds. If smoke density increases during the hush period, the alarm will re-trigger. For interconnected alarms, pressing the test/hush button on the sensing unit will mute all alarms, but pressing it on any other unit will not cancel the alarm.

The smoke detector provides visual indicators: a small GREEN LED indicates a healthy AC supply, while a RED LED flashes approximately once a minute to show that the battery is healthy. When smoke is detected, the RED LED flashes quickly along with the audible alarm. A short "beep" once a minute indicates a low battery, signaling that replacement is needed within 7 days.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Source: 220-240Vac~ 50-60Hz with 9V battery back-up.
  • Battery Back-Up: 9Vdc Alkaline or Carbon Zinc battery (EVER READY PP3S, DURACELL MN1604 9V recommended).
  • Battery Back-Up Life: Minimum 1 year operation during mains supply interruption.
  • Operating Current: <20mA in alarm, 15μA in standby mode.
  • Sensitivity to Smoke: 0.61–1.92% per foot obscuration.
  • Operating Temperature: 4°C - 38°C.
  • Ambient Humidity: 10% - 90%.
  • Alarm Sound Level: 85 Decibels at 3 meters.
  • Interconnect Facility: Up to 40 smoke detectors.
  • Hush Facility: Mutes alarm for 10 minutes; re-triggers if smoke density increases.
  • Approval: EN14604, Licence No: KM 539000.
  • Safety Markings: CE, F, BS 14604:2005, KM539000.
  • Wiring: Live (Brown or Red), Neutral (Blue or Black), Interconnect (Yellow - for multiple alarms). Double insulated, no earth connection required for the device itself.
  • Cable: Minimum 0.75mm² cross-sectional area.
  • Circuit Protection: Suitable circuit (5 or 6 Amp MCB or fuse) or fused spur (3 Amp fuse) via a fused connection unit.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: The device comes with a mounting plate, mains connector, 9V battery, and fixing kit. Installation requires removing the base plate, marking fixing holes, securing the base plate, connecting the power connector, inserting the 9V battery, and then assembling the detector onto the base plate. Tamper-proof tabs can be used to lock the detector in position.
  • Location: For single-storey dwellings, an alarm should be in the hallway between living and sleeping areas. For multi-storey dwellings, an alarm should be at the bottom of the staircase and on each upstairs landing, including basements (excluding crawl spaces and unfinished attics). It should be mounted on a ceiling in a central position, at least 300mm away from light fittings, and 900mm from the apex on sloping ceilings (measured horizontally). Avoid kitchens, bathrooms, garages, areas with extreme temperatures (below 4°C or above 40°C), high humidity (exceeding 90%), fume-filled environments, or directly above hot objects.
  • Testing: Regular testing is crucial. The smoke alarm should be tested weekly by pressing and holding the test button for approximately 3 seconds. A loud pulsating alarm and a flashing RED LED indicate correct operation. For interconnected systems, each alarm should be tested in turn to confirm all alarms trigger.
  • False Alarm Management: The "Hush" feature helps manage false alarms from cooking fumes or steam. If frequent false alarms occur, relocating the device or cleaning it may be necessary. If the problem persists, the unit can be returned to the place of purchase.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Replacement: The 9V battery should be replaced immediately when the unit emits a short "beep" once a minute. To replace the battery, switch off the mains electricity, remove the locking tabs, twist the alarm anti-clockwise to detach it from the base, remove the power connector, replace the battery, re-connect the power connector, re-assemble the alarm, restore power, and test the alarm.
  • Cleaning: The smoke alarm should be cleaned regularly to prevent dust build-up, which can cause false alarms or reduce sensitivity. Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to gently clean around the front grille section and sides. Do not use chemical or abrasive cleaners.
  • Guarantee: The product is guaranteed to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for five years from the date of purchase under normal use and service. Tampering with the unit invalidates the guarantee. In case of a claim, return the detector with proof of purchase. The company's liability is limited to the replacement cost of the detector.

Important Safety Information:

  • Always assume an alarm indicates a real fire and evacuate immediately.
  • Have an escape plan, ensure all occupants know it, and keep escape routes clear.
  • Call the Fire Brigade from outside the building.
  • Do not go back inside a burning building.
  • Do not smoke in bed.
  • Keep matches and lighters away from children.
  • Store flammable materials properly.
  • Maintain emergency equipment like fire extinguishers.
  • This alarm is suitable only for single-occupancy private dwellings, not multi-occupancy or commercial/industrial premises.
  • The smoke alarm is not a substitute for property, disability, life, or other insurance.

End-of-Life Disposal:

When the alarm reaches the end of its life, it should not be disposed of with normal household waste. Recycle it where facilities exist, or check with your retailer or local authority for suitable options, in accordance with the European "WEEE Directive" and UK WEEE Regulations.
