Overview

The EURO-PRO Professional Portable Steamer, Model SC500, is a hand-held steam cleaner designed for household use, utilizing pressurized steam to remove tough grease, dirt, and grime from various surfaces without harsh chemicals. This makes it an ecological cleaning solution. The device operates on 120V, 60Hz, and has a power rating of 1600 Watts.

Function Description

The primary function of the Professional Portable Steamer is to clean and sanitize a wide range of surfaces using high-temperature steam. It is equipped with various attachments that allow it to perform different cleaning tasks effectively. The steam system is designed to remove wrinkles from fabrics by "vaporizing" the surface from a distance of 12-16 inches, producing dry steam that removes wrinkles without leaving the fabric wet.

Usage Features

The steamer is designed for ease of use with several features that enhance its versatility and safety:

  • Water Filling: The unit is filled with water using a provided filling flask. It is crucial to ensure the unit is unplugged and cool before filling. The safety cap must be turned counter-clockwise to remove and clockwise to tighten, pressing down firmly. Overfilling should be avoided, leaving approximately 2 1/2 inches between the top of the unit and the water level. The device heats the water to produce steam, with a heating time of approximately 6 minutes, which can be shortened by using hot water. An indicator light (red) illuminates when the unit is plugged in and changes to green when ready for use.
  • Locking Trigger Button: The steam cleaner features a locking trigger button. Pressing the trigger releases steam, and pushing it all the way locks it in the "on" position for continuous steam flow. To unlock, simply press the trigger release, and the trigger will pop up, stopping the steam flow.
  • Refilling with Water: When the steam output decreases, indicating a need for refilling, the user must first disconnect the power cord, depress the trigger to release all residual pressure, and carefully unscrew the safety cap. After allowing the unit to cool for about 5 minutes, water is slowly poured into the boiler using the filling flask, avoiding overfilling. The safety cap is then screwed back on, and the appliance can be plugged in again.
  • Attachments: The steamer comes with several attachments for specialized cleaning:
    • Concentrator Nozzle: This nozzle attaches directly to the unit's nozzle by aligning pins with slots and turning clockwise 90 degrees to lock. It is used for focused steam application.
    • Small Detail Brush / Angle Adapter: These can be used directly on the concentrator nozzle for detailed cleaning tasks.
    • Garment Diffuser Head: This attachment can be used with the hose or directly on the unit. It attaches by aligning pins with slots. It is particularly useful for cleaning upholstery and removing fabric wrinkles.
    • Window Squeegee: This attachment is designed for cleaning windows, glass surfaces, and mirrors. It attaches to the garment diffuser head by placing its hinges into the open tabs at the back of the diffuser head and swinging it up until the locking tab engages. To remove, the user pushes their thumb against the locking tab.
    • Hose: The hose connects to the concentrator nozzle by aligning guide pins with slots and turning clockwise 90 degrees to lock. This allows for extended reach and flexibility when cleaning. Accessories like the angle adapter, detail brush, and window squeegee can be attached to the hose via the concentrator nozzle.
    • Cleaning Bonnet: This bonnet slips over the garment diffuser head and is used for cleaning upholstery.
    • Shoulder Strap: A detachable shoulder strap provides greater freedom of movement, allowing both hands to be free for various cleaning tasks. It snaps onto connecting rings on the unit body. When using the strap, care should be taken to avoid excessive rocking or tilting of the unit, which could cause water to enter the hose and be discharged with the steam.
  • Cleaning Applications:
    • Window, Glass Surfaces, and Mirrors: Use the window squeegee with top-to-bottom and lateral movements to clear water and prevent streaks.
    • Fiberglass or Stainless Steel Surfaces: The detail brush is used with slow movements to emulsify dirt and grease, followed by wiping with a 100% cotton towel.
    • Soap Scum: Steam dissolves soap scum quickly. For stubborn mineral deposits, the detail brush can be used, or the surface can be pre-treated with lemon, vinegar, or seltzer soda water.
    • Bathroom Areas: The detail brush is effective for grout, shower door tracks, and hard-to-reach areas. The window squeegee cleans larger surfaces. The concentrator nozzle, with or without the detail brush, is used for sanitary fixtures, sinks, and faucets.
    • Blinds: The detail brush cleans blinds by moving it over the surface, allowing vapor to penetrate.
    • Refrigerator and Kitchen Equipment: The concentrator nozzle blows away dirt in ice machines and door seals. The detail brush cleans can openers and other kitchen equipment.
    • Small Appliances: The detail brush is used for small areas. Always unplug electrical appliances before cleaning.
    • Clothing: The garment diffuser head removes wrinkles from fabrics.
    • Upholstery: The garment diffuser head with the cleaning bonnet is used with fast, light strokes. For stubborn spots, gentle work for no more than a minute, followed by a five-minute drying period, and repetition. Circular or back-and-forth movements are used to get all sides of surface fibers, finishing with a brushing in one direction for a uniform appearance.
  • Safety Precautions: The device is equipped with a grounded-type 3-wire cord (3-prong plug) for safety. It is designed to fit into a 3-prong electrical outlet. Users are warned not to defeat the safety purpose of the grounding pin. It is crucial to avoid circuit overload by not operating another appliance on the same circuit. If an extension cord is necessary, a 15-ampere, 14-gauge cord should be used, and it should be arranged to prevent pulling or tripping hazards. The system should never be left unattended when connected to a power supply.
  • Water Type: While tap water is generally suitable, demineralized or distilled water is recommended in hard water areas or when steaming light-colored fabrics to prevent hard water stains. Crucially, no cleaning solutions, scented perfumes, oils, or any other chemicals should be added to the water, as this can damage the unit or make it unsafe and will void the warranty.
  • Surface Compatibility: The steamer is designed for hard surfaces and upholstery that can withstand high heat. It should not be used on soft plastics, unsealed wood, or cold glass. On surfaces treated with wax or "no-wax" floors, the heat and steam may remove the sheen. Unsealed wood may experience rising grain. It is always recommended to test an isolated area of the surface before proceeding.

Maintenance Features

Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of the steamer:

  • Cooling and Storage: The appliance must be unplugged and allowed to cool completely before any cleaning or storage. After use, the trigger should be depressed to release any residual pressure in the boiler before opening the safety cap. All water should be emptied from the tank after each use. The unit should be stored in a dry, cool place, with the power cord loosely wrapped around it.
  • Periodic Rinsing: A periodic rinse (every 10-15 tankfuls) is recommended to free the boiler from scale deposits. This involves filling the boiler with water, shaking vigorously, and tilting the cleaner upside down to empty the water and any scale deposits.
  • Cleaning Nozzles: If steam output decreases, mineral deposit build-up in the nozzle orifice may be the cause. After unplugging the unit and releasing residual pressure, a small-diameter stiff metal wire (like a straightened paperclip) can be carefully inserted into the nozzle orifice and moved back and forth to remove deposits. After cleaning, reconnect the appliance to power, switch it on, and check steam output. If performance does not improve, the process can be repeated.
  • Brush Cleaning: The detail brushes can be cleaned using the steam cleaner itself or by placing them in the basket of a dishwasher. For manual cleaning, pliers can be used to hold the brush.
  • General Cleaning Tips: For vertical surfaces, wipe from top to bottom to prevent re-soiling cleaned areas. When cleaning, start with the smallest brush for tight spots and corners. Dirt should be wiped away as soon as possible to prevent it from drying and re-adhering. It is helpful to have a micro-fiber cloth, terry cloth towel, or paper towel ready to remove moisture and residue. White cotton towels are recommended. When cleaning ovens, the detail brush is useful for cleaning around elements, drip trays, cracks, crevices, and hard-to-reach areas.
