Overview

The Flavel Arundel MK2 Multi-Fuel Stove, Model No. FCMSB2, is a roomheater designed for intermittent burning of solid fuels. It meets the safety and performance requirements of European Standard EN 13240:2001+A1:2004 and has been independently tested by BSRIA laboratory in Berkshire, UK. This stove is suitable for installation in a dedicated chimney and is designed to be operated in accordance with the provided instructions.

Function Description:

The Flavel Arundel MK2 is a multi-fuel stove capable of burning both wood logs and various mineral fuels. It functions as a room heater, providing direct heat output to the space in which it is installed. The stove features a primary air control, a secondary air control (which also acts as an air wash for the glass), and a riddling mechanism for ash removal. A smoke stop is fitted to the secondary air control to ensure adequate air supply for burning wood, especially in smoke control areas.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Identifier: FCMBS2
  • Direct Heat Output: 4.9kW (Nominal), 3.0kW (Minimum Indicative)
  • Indirect Heating Functionality: No

  • Minimum Clearance to Combustible Surfaces: 350mm Rear, 375mm Side
  • Flue Draught (Pa): 12 (0.05 ins WG)
  • Mean Flue Gas Temperature (°C): 212 (Wood), 218 (Mineral Fuel)
  • Emissions (if O2 = 13%):
    • NOx mg/m³: 88 (Wood), 165 (Mineral Fuel)
    • CO %: 0.24 (Wood), 0.27 (Mineral Fuel)
    • CxHy mg/m³: 690 (Wood), 736 (Mineral Fuel)

  • Dimensions: 430mm (width) x 620mm (height) x 390mm (depth) (excluding flue spigot). Flue outlet is 125mm diameter.

Usage Features:

  • Multi-Fuel Capability: Designed to burn both wood logs and various smokeless mineral fuels, offering flexibility in fuel choice.
  • Smoke Control Area Exemption: The stove, when fitted with the smoke control stop (part number F-176950) and burning wood logs, is exempted under the Clean Air Act 1993 for use in smoke control areas of the UK.
  • Air Controls:
    • Primary Air Control: Located at the bottom of the stove door, it allows air under the grate, crucial for quick ignition and refuelling.
    • Secondary Air Control: Located above the stove door, it provides an "air wash" facility to keep the glass clean and aids in burning away smoke.
  • Riddling Mechanism: Located on the right-hand side, operated with a supplied tool, it helps remove ash from the grate into the ashpan.
  • Ashpan: A removable ashpan with a handle is supplied for easy ash disposal.
  • Glove: A glove is provided for safe operation of hot controls and the door.
  • Break-in Fires: Specific instructions are provided for the first 20 hours of burning (gentle, small wood fires only) to properly adhere the paintwork and prevent damage.
  • Lighting and Refuelling: Detailed step-by-step instructions are given for lighting the stove and refuelling, including recommended fuel amounts and timings.
  • Fuel Recommendations: Specific guidelines for suitable wood types (seasoned, untreated, 12-20% moisture, max 125mm diameter, 250mm length) and mineral fuels (Anthracite "small" size, Briquettes like "Homefire" and "Phurnacite"). Explicitly states that Petroleum Coke and Housecoal/Bituminous Coal are NOT suitable.
  • Safety Warnings: Emphasizes the stove becomes extremely hot, requiring a fireguard if children, elderly, or infirm are present. Warns against operating with the door left open, fuel overloading, or leaving dampers open excessively, as these can cause excessive smoke.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Cleaning: Ashpan should be emptied after every use and during refuelling. The stove interior, including the grate and throat plate, should be cleaned monthly when cold.
  • Chimney Sweeping: The flue, flue pipe, and chimney require regular sweeping (annually as a minimum) to minimize soot and tar build-up. Access for sweeping can be through suitable access doors or by removing the stove's throat plate.
  • Glass Cleaning: If the door glass becomes stained, the secondary air control may need to be opened more during use. Ceramic glass cleaner can be used to clean the glass when the stove is cool.
  • Internal Boards: Notes that internal boards will craze with normal use, which is not a fault, and cracks will not affect performance as long as boards remain in position. Replacement is necessary if pieces break off. Burning correct fuels can extend board life.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: Provides guidance on common issues such as smoke from the chimney, poor heat output, lack of controllability, difficulty burning for extended periods, overfiring, and smoke coming into the room, along with potential causes and solutions. Recommends consulting a qualified person for persistent problems.
  • Throat Plate Removal: Instructions for removing and re-fitting the throat plate are provided for cleaning and chimney access.
  • Smoke Stop Removal (Optional): Instructions are given for unscrewing and removing the smoke stop if smoke is not a concern, noting that this may improve controllability and burn times but could increase smoke emissions and invalidates DEFRA approval if burning wood in smoke control areas.
  • Spare Parts: An exploded diagram with part numbers is included for ordering genuine Flavel spare parts, emphasizing that no unauthorized modifications are permitted.
  • Professional Servicing: Flavel recommends a suitably qualified (HETAS) registered engineer for servicing.
