ECS is located on center tunnel, under instrument panel. ECS contains a microcomputer, which monitors
electrical system components and connections. ECS performs a system self-check of air bag system internal
circuits every time ignition switch is turned to RUN position. ECS also energizes AIR BAG warning light
during initial system self-check and whenever a fault is detected. Faults are stored in ECS memory and
translated into flash codes, which are displayed through AIR BAG warning light. ECS also communicates
through Data Link Connector (DLC) current and historical Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
If a system fault exists and AIR BAG warning light is malfunctioning, ECS signals Generic Electronic Module
(GEM) to activate a chime, indicating need for service.
PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG DEACTIVATE (PAD) SWITCH
PAD switch allows the vehicle operator to deactivate the passenger-side air bag when a rear facing infant seat is
in the passenger seat.
PASSENGER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE
When sensors close, signaling an impact, air bag igniters trigger inflator. When air bag is activated, instrument
p
anel trim cover tears at seams and hinges, allowing deployment. Passenge
r
-side air bag module is only
serviced as a complete assembly.
SEAT BELT PRETENSIONERS
The front seat belt pretensioner is integrated with seat belt retractor or seat belt buckle assembly, depending on
model. Pretensioner contains a pyrotechnic device, that when signaled by the Electronic Crash Sensor (ECS),
deploys to remove excess webbing from seat belt system, tightening webbing around occupant.
