If you do not depressthe brake pedalwhile
the vehicle is stationary and the hill holderis
active, an acoustic warning sounds briefly. The
hill holderisdeactivated and the ¿ indica-
tor lamp in the instrument cluster goes out.
If you depressthe brake pedaluntil the vehicle
is stationary whilethe hill holderisactivated,
the hill holderisengaged.The ¿ indicator
lamp in the instrument cluster lights up.
If you then applythe parking brake, the hill
holderisdeactivated and the ¿ indicator
lamp in the instrument cluster goes out. The
vehicle is then held by the parking brake. After
the parking brake is released, the hill holderis
no longer active. If you depressthe brake
pedal, the hill holderremains active after the
parking brake is released.
If you depressthe accelerator pedaland the
vehicle pulls away, the hill holderisreleased
automatically. The ¿ indicator lamp in the
instrument cluster goes out.
Continuous brake
Important safety notes
G
WARNING
If you activate the continuous brake or shift
to alowergear on aslippery road surface in
order to increase the engine's braking
effect, the drive wheelsmay lose traction.
There is an increased risk of skidding and
accidents.
Do not activate the continuous brake and do
not shift to alowergear in order to increase
the engine's braking effect on aslippery
road surface.
G
WARNING
If there is aretarder or retarder control mal-
function, braking characteristics can
change. The vehicle can brake uncontrolla-
bly.The wheelscan block and thus lose
traction on slippery road surfaces. This can
cause the vehicle to skid. There is arisk of
an accident.
Drive with even greater care or stop the
vehicle immediately in accordance with the
traffic conditions. Have the retarder
checked and repaired immediately at a
qualifiedspecialist workshop.
Alwaysobserve the warning lampsand dis-
playmessages and follow the described
measures.
The engine brake and retarder are used as a
continuous brake.
You can utilise the engine's braking effect,
particularly on long downhill gradients if you:
R
activate the continuous brake
R
shift to alowergear in good time
The continuous brake is activated automati-
cally if:
R
after several brake applications, the vehicle
electronics detect that the vehicle is loaded
and you then depressthe brake pedal
R
cruise control, speed limiter or distance
control assistant intervene in overrun mode
Activating/deactivating the continu-
ous brake
!
If the continuous brake is deactivated and
the à indicator lamp in the instrument
cluster does not go out, have the continuous
brake checked at aqualifiedspecialist work-
shop.
Example: continuous brake lever (with 5brake
levels)
Vehicleswithoutaretarder are equipped with
only 2brake stages (1 - 2).
Depending on the engine, the transmission
and the powersetting, vehicleswith aretarder
are equipped with amaximum of
5brake stages (1 - 5).
If you turn the ignition lock to the drive posi-
tion and the à indicator lamp lights up in
