Ammonia vapors have apungent smell and are
particularly irritating to:
R
skin
R
mucousmembranes
R
eyes
The vapors maycause aburning sensation in
the eyes, nose and throat as well as irritation
of the throat and watering eyes.
Avoidinhaling ammoniavapors.Onlyfillthe
DEF tank in well-ventilated areas.
DEF shouldnot come into contact with skin,
eyes or clothing, and shouldnot be swallowed.
KeepDEF outofthe reach of children.
If youcome into contact with DEF, observe the
following:
R
Immediately wash DEF from your skinwith
water and soap.
R
If DEF comesinto contact with your eyes,
rinseyoureyeswithclean water immedi-
ately.Consult adoctor withoutdelay.
R
If youhaveswallowed DEF, immediately
rinseyourmouth with water and drink
plenty of water. Consult adoctor without
delay.
R
Immediately change outofclothing which
hascome into contact with DEF.
Highoutside temperatures
The chemical compositionofDEF can break
down if it heats up to 122 ‡(50 †) overa
long period, e.g.asaresultofdirect sunlight
on the tank. Thiscreates ammoniavapor.
Lowoutside temperatures
DEF freezesatatemperature of approximately
12 ‡(Ò11 †). Depending on equipment and
country, the DEF supply system of the vehicle
maybeheated.Winter operationistherefore
also ensured for temperaturesbelow 12 ‡
(Ò11 †).
Additives, tap water
!
Do not mix any additiveswithDEF. Do not
dilute DEF with tap water. Thiscould result
in malfunctioning of the emissions control
system.
Storage
!
Containers madeofthe following materials
are not suitablefor storing DEF:
R
aluminum
R
copper
R
copper-bearing alloys
R
unalloyed steel
R
galvanized steel
If youstore DEF in such containers, compo-
nents of thesemetals may detach them-
selves and destroy the exhaustgas after-
treatment system.
To store DEF, useonly containers madeofthe
following materials:
R
Cr‑Ni steelinaccordance with
DIN EN 10 088-1/2/3
R
Mo-Cr‑Ni steelinaccordance with
DIN EN 10 088-1/2/3
R
Polypropylene
R
Polyethylene
Disposal
H
Environmental note
Dispose of DEF in an environmentally
responsible manner.
Observe country-specificlawsand regulations
when disposing of DEF.
Purity
!
Impurities in DEF, e.g. duetootherservice
products, cleaning products or dust, may
lead to:
R
Increased emissions values
R
Damage to the catalytic converter
R
Engine damage
R
Exhaust gasaftertreatment malfunctions
EnsurethatDEF is always pure to avoid mal-
functions in the exhaustgas aftertreatment.
If DEF is pumpedfrom the tank, e.g. during
repairs, do not usethis to refill the tank. Oth-
erwise, the purity of the fluid wouldnolonger
be guaranteed.
