Overview

The Gallagher HBUS 8 Port Hub (C300698) is a crucial component in Gallagher security systems, designed to facilitate flexible wiring configurations for HBUS devices. Its primary function is to allow installers to reuse existing wiring on-site, supporting combinations of star, home run, and daisy chain wiring when connecting HBUS devices back to a Gallagher Controller 6000. This flexibility is achieved through the integration of a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), which enables the star wiring of devices. The hub itself is not a monitored device, meaning it operates transparently to the Controller and connected HBUS devices.

Function Description

The HBUS 8 Port Hub acts as a central distribution point for HBUS communication and power. It takes a single HBUS input from a Gallagher Controller 6000 and splits it into eight independent HBUS output ports. This allows for a "star" topology where multiple HBUS devices can branch off from the hub, rather than being limited to a linear daisy chain. This is particularly useful in installations where devices are geographically dispersed or where existing wiring infrastructure needs to be leveraged efficiently.

The hub supports various HBUS devices, including T-Series Readers, Z10 Tension Sensors, T20 Alarms Terminals, and F-Series Fence Controllers. However, it's important to note that UL evaluation for the 8 Port Hub has been specifically for readers and alarm terminals only, with tension sensors and fence controller equipment not being subject to the UL294 listing.

Each of the eight HBUS output ports is permanently terminated internally with a 120 Ω resistance, simplifying installation by eliminating the need for external termination at the hub's output. The "In" port, which connects to the Controller, has an optional termination jumper (J2 TERM) whose usage depends on the wiring configuration to the Controller.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Operating Voltage (Vin): 13.6 Vdc ± 15%. This indicates the required input power for the hub to function correctly.
  • Operating Current at 13.6 Volts: 20 mA. This is the power consumption of the hub itself.
  • Available Current from each HBUS Outgoing Port: The hub provides 1 x 4A resettable fuse supplying all output power ports. This means the total current drawn by all connected HBUS devices across all eight output ports should not exceed 4 Amperes. The VOUT and GND terminals provide a 13.6 Vdc ± 15% output suitable for HBUS connections, rated at 4A total from all outputs.
  • Temperature Range:
    • Independently verified: -10 °C to 50 °C (14 °F to 122 °F)
    • UL certified: 0 °C to 49 °C (32 °F to 120 °F)
  • Humidity:
    • Independently verified: 95% non-condensing
    • UL certified: 85% non-condensing
  • Power and Comms Cable Length: Depends on the power requirements of the end devices. This highlights that power delivery is a limiting factor for cable length, especially with multiple devices.
  • Comms Only Cable Length: Up to 500m. When only communication signals are transmitted, the cable can be significantly longer.
  • Cable Length using Gallagher HBUS Cable: Up to 500m.
  • Dimensions:
    • Height: 30 mm (1.2 in) with connectors
    • Width: 87 mm (3.4 in)
    • Depth: 88 mm (3.5 in)
  • Mounting Holes: 4 x 3 mm.
  • Approvals and Standards:
    • FCC Part 15 Class B digital device compliance.
    • RoHS Compliant.
    • AS/NZS IEC 60839.11.1:2019 Grade 4, Class II.
    • EN50130-4, EN55022.
    • UKCA, CE certified.
    • UL Listed (US-CA) for equipment: com, burg and acc module (BP8861).

Usage Features

  • Flexible Wiring: The primary advantage is its ability to support star, home run, and daisy chain wiring configurations, offering significant flexibility in system design and installation. This is particularly beneficial for retrofitting existing sites or optimizing cable runs in new installations.
  • Transparent Operation: The hub is transparent to the Controller and HBUS devices, meaning no specific Command Centre configuration is required for the hub itself. This simplifies system setup and management.
  • Diagnostic LED: A "RUN" diagnostic LED provides visual feedback on the hub's operational status. A single red flash indicates normal functioning.
  • Easy Power Connection: Power is supplied via a 2-pin connector labeled "Vin" with clearly marked positive and negative terminals.
  • Integrated Termination: Each HBUS output port includes permanent 120 Ω termination, reducing the complexity of wiring and ensuring proper signal integrity for connected devices.
  • Mounting Options: The hub can be mounted in various Gallagher cabinets, including the Starter Kit Cabinet (C300120), Gallagher Cabinet (C200100), or Gallagher Dual Cabinet (C200104 or C200105), using a Gallagher Mounting Plate (C200001, C200002 or C200003) and the supplied 4 pan pozi screws.
  • Common Grounding: It is recommended to run a common ground (-ve) from the HBUS 8 Port Hub for all RS485 devices to ensure stable communication.

Maintenance Features

  • Resettable Fuse: The 4A fuse supplying output power ports is resettable, offering protection against overcurrent conditions and potentially simplifying troubleshooting by allowing the fuse to reset after a fault is cleared, rather than requiring replacement.
  • Diagnostic LED: The "RUN" LED serves as a basic diagnostic tool, quickly indicating if the hub is functioning normally. This can help in initial fault finding.
  • ESD Protection: The installation instructions emphasize the importance of electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions, indicating that the device contains sensitive components. Proper handling during installation and any potential servicing is crucial for preventing damage.
  • Environmental Compliance: Adherence to RoHS and WEEE directives means the device is designed with environmental considerations, facilitating responsible disposal and recycling at the end of its life.
  • Documentation: The availability of a detailed installation note (3E4465) provides comprehensive guidance for proper installation, connection, and understanding of the device's features and limitations, which is essential for effective maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Cabinet Enclosure: The recommendation to locate the HBUS Hub within an enclosure that has Tamper Detection not only enhances security but also protects the device from environmental factors and unauthorized access, contributing to its longevity and reliability.
