Gallagher T11 Reader
The Gallagher T11 Reader
The Gallagher T11 Reader is a smart card proximity reader. It can be installed as
either an entry reader or exit reader. It can be mounted on any standard electrical
flush (gang) box, used in New Zealand, Australia, USA and Canada.
The reader can read Mifare DESFire EV1, Mifare Plus and Mifare Classic cards. The
Multi Tech variant can also read 125Khz cards.
The reader sends information to the Cardax FT Controller and acts upon information
sent from the Cardax FT Controller. The reader itself does not make any access
decisions.
The Gallagher T11 Reader uses the “Cardax IV Reader” communications protocol
to communicate with the Cardax FT Controller.
This equipment contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic
discharge. Ensure both you and the equipment are earthed before beginning
any servicing.

Overview

The Gallagher T11 Reader is a smart card proximity reader designed for access control systems, functioning as either an entry or exit reader. It is compatible with standard electrical flush (gang) boxes used in New Zealand, Australia, USA, and Canada. This device supports various smart card technologies, including Mifare DESFire EV1, Mifare Plus, and Mifare Classic cards. A Multi Tech variant of the reader also supports 125Khz cards, offering broader compatibility. The reader operates by sending information to a Cardax FT Controller and acting upon instructions received from it, meaning the reader itself does not make access decisions. It communicates with the Cardax FT Controller using the "Cardax IV Reader" communications protocol.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Requirements: The reader operates on a supply voltage range of 9-16Vdc, measured at the reader terminals. The operating current draw varies with the supply voltage.
    • Standard Variant (at 12Vdc): 54mA (standby), momentarily reaching 100mA (peak) during card read, beeper, and LED activity.
    • Multi Tech Variant (at 12Vdc): 88mA (standby), momentarily reaching 140mA (peak).
    • Power Source: A linear or good quality switched-mode power supply is recommended. Low quality or noisy power supplies may affect reader performance.
  • Cabling: A minimum cable size of 4 core 24 AWG (0.2mm²) stranded security cable is required for data and power transmission. When using a single cable for both, voltage drop and data requirements must be considered. While specified to operate at 9Vdc, a voltage of approximately 12Vdc at the reader is recommended for optimal performance.
    • Cable Lengths (Combined Power and Data in a Single Cable):
      • CAT5E (4 twisted pair, each 2 x 0.2mm² (24 AWG)): 100m (330ft)
      • SEC472 (4 x 0.2mm², not twisted pairs (24 AWG)): 100m (330ft)
      • SEC4142 (4 x 0.4mm², not twisted pairs (21 AWG)): 150m (500ft)
      • BELDEN 8723 (2 twisted pair, each 2 x 0.4mm² (22 AWG)): 100m (330ft)
      • BELDEN 9842 (2 twisted pair, each 2 x 0.2mm² (24 AWG)): 100m (330ft)
    • Cable Lengths (Data Only in a Single Cable):
      • CAT5E: 300m (1000ft)
      • SEC472: 250m (800ft)
      • SEC4142: 150m (500ft)
      • BELDEN 8723: 150m (500ft)
      • BELDEN 9842: 200m (650ft)
    • Note: Grounding shielded cable may reduce obtainable cable length by 25% to 30%.
  • Environmental:
    • Temperature Range: -30°C to +70°C. Direct sunlight may increase internal reader temperature.
    • Humidity: 95% non-condensing.
    • Environmental Protection: IP68.
    • Impact Rating: IK07.
  • Dimensions: The drill template indicates a height of 115mm (4.53 inches) and a width of 70mm (2.76 inches) for the reader's mounting footprint. The cable hole is 13mm (1/2 inch) in diameter.

Usage Features:

  • Installation Flexibility: The reader can be mounted on vertically oriented electrical flush (gang) boxes or any solid flat surface.
  • Mounting Height: The recommended mounting height is 1.1m (3.6 ft) from the floor level to the center of the reader device, though this may vary by local regulations.
  • Metal Surface Considerations: Installation on metal surfaces, especially those with a large surface area, will reduce the read range. The extent of this reduction depends on the type of metal used.
  • Proximity Reader Spacing: A minimum separation of 200mm (8 inches) in all directions is required between any two proximity readers. When mounting on an internal wall, ensure readers on opposite sides are also separated by at least 200mm.
  • Connection to Controllers: The Gallagher T11 Reader connects to various Cardax FT devices using the "Cardax IV Reader" communications protocol, including:
    • Cardax FT Reader Module (for Controller 6000)
    • Cardax FT GBUS Universal Reader Interface (Cardax FT GBUS URI)
    • Cardax FT Controller 3000-4R or 3000-8R
    • Cardax FT Universal Reader Interface (Cardax FT URI)
    • Cardax FT Reader I/O Interface
  • Wiring: Connections are made by matching colored wires from the reader tail (Red, Black, Orange, Green, Brown, White, Blue) to corresponding terminals on the controller or interface. "Reserved" wires should not be cut as they may be required later.
  • Controller Grouping (Cardax FT Controller 3000-4R/3000-8R): Ports on these controllers are set up in groups. The 3000-4R has two groups (1 and 2), while the 3000-8R has four groups (1 to 4). Each group supports two Gallagher T11 Readers. It is important to note that within a group, Cardax IV readers cannot be mixed with Wiegand Readers, as Wiegand readers require all four pins on plug PB.

Maintenance Features:

  • Routine Maintenance: Not applicable for this reader.
  • Cleaning: The reader should only be cleaned with a clean, lint-free, damp cloth.
  • Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Precaution: The equipment contains components susceptible to ESD damage. Users must ensure both themselves and the equipment are earthed before performing any servicing.
  • Installation Security: The facia assembly is secured to the base with an M3 Torx Post Security screw, requiring a T10 Torx Post Security screwdriver. The recommended torque for this screw is 0.7Nm (0.5 lb/ft), with a maximum torque of 1.5Nm (1.1 lb/ft) not to be exceeded.
  • FCC Compliance: The device complies with Class B digital device limits under Part 15 of FCC Rules. It is designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in residential installations. If interference occurs, measures like reorienting the antenna, increasing separation, or connecting to a different circuit are suggested. Any modifications not expressly approved by Gallagher Group Limited could void the user's authority to operate the equipment.
  • RoHS Compliance: This product complies with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS) regulations, prohibiting certain hazardous substances in the European Union.
  • Waste Disposal: The product's symbol indicates it should not be disposed of with general waste. It must be handed over to a designated collection point for recycling electrical and electronic equipment to conserve natural resources and protect human health and the environment.
