Overview

The GARDENA Backpack Sprayer 12 I (Art. 884 and Art. 885 with manometer) is a versatile device designed for distributing various liquid substances in domestic gardens and allotments. It is specifically intended for solvent-free liquid pesticides, herbicides, fertilisers, window cleaners, and car wax. The device is not suitable for use in public places, parks, sport arenas, agriculture, or forestry.

Function Description:

The Backpack Sprayer operates by creating pressure within its tank, allowing for the controlled spraying of liquids through a spray lance. The user pumps a lever to build up pressure, and then presses a button on the sprayer handle to initiate spraying. The spray jet can be adjusted from a full jet to a fine mist by opening or closing the nozzle. This flexibility makes it suitable for various applications, from targeted root fertilisation to broad sheet fertilisation or pest control.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Maximum Capacity: 12 litres
  • Minimum/Maximum Spray Lance Length: 60 / 100 cm
  • Hose Length: 125 cm
  • Permissible Operating Pressure: 3 bar
  • Permissible Operating Temperature: 35 °C

Usage Features:

  • Assembly: The device requires initial assembly, including fitting the carrying strap, attaching the sprayer head to the handle, and connecting the sprayer handle to the hose, and the hose to the pump. Clear instructions are provided for each step, emphasising hand-tightening union nuts and avoiding pliers to prevent damage. The pump lever can be positioned on either the left or right side to suit the user's dominant hand.
  • Filling the Tank: Before filling, the product to be used should be thoroughly stirred. The tank cap is unscrewed, and the liquid is poured in up to the 12-litre mark. Users must adhere to the product manufacturer's precautionary measures and dosage instructions. The tank cap is then screwed tight by hand.
  • Spraying: The sprayer is worn on the back, and the carrying straps are adjusted for comfort. Pressure is built by repeatedly pressing the pump lever (approximately 7-9 times) until resistance is felt. Spraying begins by pressing the button on the sprayer handle and stops when the button is released.
  • Adjustable Spray Lance: The spray lance length can be adjusted by loosening a union nut, pulling the lance to the desired length, and then re-tightening the nut.
  • Adjustable Spray Jet: The spray jet can be adjusted from a full jet (nozzle open) to a fine mist (nozzle closed) by rotating the nozzle.
  • Safety Features:
    • A pressure relief valve is integrated into the tank cap to equalise pressure and prevent leaks if the sprayer falls over.
    • Users are warned never to open the sprayer or unscrew the handle while it is pressurised. Pressure must always be released completely by pressing the sprayer handle's pushbutton before opening.
    • The device should not be left unattended when full and pressurised, and must be kept out of reach of children and away from heat sources.
    • Only substances approved by GARDENA should be used to avoid physical injury or damage to the device. Acids, disinfectants, or waterproofing agents are explicitly prohibited.
    • The manual recommends using pesticides approved by the BBA (German Federal Biological Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry) to ensure compatibility with the sprayer's materials.
    • Users must comply with all special precautionary measures specified by the manufacturer of the product being used.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning After Each Use: Thorough cleaning is crucial after every use to prevent chemical reactions and ensure longevity.
    1. Release pressure through the spray lance.
    2. Unscrew and clean the tank cap, including the O-ring, and the inlet filter in clean water.
    3. Empty the tank, fill it with clean water (with detergent if necessary), and spray it out until the tank is empty. This cleans the nozzle and valves.
    4. Leave the Backpack Sprayer open to dry.
    5. Residual products must not be disposed of in the sewerage system; local disposal centres should be consulted.
  • Cleaning the Filter in the Sprayer Handle: If the spray jet is poor or non-existent, the filter in the sprayer handle may be blocked.
    1. Unscrew the union nut and pull out the hose with the filter from the sprayer handle.
    2. Rinse the filter under running water.
    3. Reattach the sprayer handle components.
  • Cleaning the Pump: If the pump fails to provide pressure after cleaning the sprayer handle filter, the pump itself may need cleaning.
    1. Remove the locking ring and joint rod from the pump.
    2. Unscrew the union ring and pull out the pump.
    3. Inspect and replace the pump O-ring if necessary.
    4. Pull out the inner part of the pump and the gasket.
    5. Clean all pump parts and gaskets with water and detergent.
    6. Reassemble the pump in reverse order, ensuring gaskets are properly seated and not squashed.
  • Thorough Inspection: GARDENA recommends a thorough inspection of the Backpack Sprayer (preferably at a GARDENA Service Centre) after 5 years of use.
  • Storage: Before storing, loosen the tank cap, clean the sprayer, and store it away from frost and out of reach of children.

Accessories:

GARDENA offers several accessories to enhance the sprayer's functionality and maintain it:

  • GARDENA Spray Cone (Art. No. 894 / 884-00.610.00): Prevents spray mist from blowing away.
  • GARDENA Gasket Kit (Art. No. 884-00.901.00): For replacing all gaskets.
  • GARDENA Viton Gasket Kit (Art. No. 884-00.902.00): For spraying extremely aggressive substances.

Troubleshooting:

The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues:

  • Pump does not provide pressure:
    • Blocked valve in the tank cap (remedy: clean tank cap).
    • Leaking hose connections at pump and sprayer handle (remedy: tighten connections).
    • Leaking pump O-ring (remedy: clean pump, check O-ring, install new O-ring if necessary).
  • Backpack Sprayer does not spray or sprays with poor jet:
    • Blocked nozzle (remedy: clean nozzle).
    • Blocked filter in sprayer handle (remedy: clean filter).
  • Tank is difficult to open:
    • Pressure in tank too low due to blocked valve in tank cap (remedy: clean tank cap).

For any other problems, users are advised to contact GARDENA Customer Service.

Warranty and Product Liability:

GARDENA provides a 2-year warranty covering material or manufacturing faults, provided the unit has been handled correctly, maintained according to instructions, and not repaired by unauthorised parties. Wearing parts like pump gaskets and pump lever bearings are not covered. GARDENA is not liable for damages caused by improper repair or the use of non-original parts.
