This document is an owner's manual and installation instructions for a GE Appliances Top Freezer Refrigerator, model GPE12. It provides comprehensive information in English, French, and Spanish, covering safety, usage, care, cleaning, installation, troubleshooting, warranty, and consumer support.

Function Description:

The GE Appliances Top Freezer Refrigerator (GPE12) is a household appliance designed for storing fresh and frozen foods. It features separate compartments for fresh food and a top-mounted freezer, allowing for independent temperature control. The refrigerator is equipped with adjustable shelves and storage drawers for organizing various food items, including fruits, vegetables, and meats. An optional icemaker accessory kit (IM4D) is available for automatic ice production, requiring a potable cold water supply. The appliance is designed for residential use and similar applications, such as staff kitchen areas, farmhouses, and bed & breakfast establishments.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model: GPE12
  • Refrigerant: Isobutane (R600a), a natural gas with high environmental compatibility, but combustible.
  • Electrical Supply: 115 Volt AC, 60 Hz, 15- or 20-amp fused, grounded electrical supply. Requires a dedicated 3-prong grounded outlet.
  • Water Pressure (for icemaker): Between 40 and 120 psi (275-827 kilopascals).
  • Operating Temperature Range: Not recommended for installation where ambient temperatures fall below 55°F (12.7°C) or exceed 100°F (37°C).
  • Clearances:
    • Sides: 1" (25.4 mm)
    • Top: 4" (101.6 mm)
    • Back: 0" (0 mm)
  • Installation Time:
    • Refrigerator Installation: 15 minutes
    • Reversing Door Swing: 1 hour

Usage Features:

  • Temperature Control: Located in the fresh food compartment, with settings from "Coldest" to "Cold" (recommended setting is "Colder"). Adjustments should be made one increment at a time, allowing 12 hours for stabilization.
  • Storage Drawers: Fruit and Vegetable Drawers provide space for produce and meats. To remove or replace, the door must be fully opened.
  • Ice Service: Manual ice trays are provided for making ice. Fill with water and place on a level surface in the freezer. Ice cubes form in a few hours. To release, twist both ends of the tray. Ice trays should be washed in lukewarm water and are not dishwasher safe.
  • Optional Icemaker (IM4D): An accessory kit for automatic ice production. Requires a cold potable water supply. The step shelf in the freezer must be in the lowest position when the icemaker is installed.
  • Door Swing Reversal: Instructions are provided to reverse the door swing from right to left, requiring basic mechanical skills and approximately 1 hour. This process involves carefully handling parts, setting screws aside, and ensuring proper alignment to prevent injury or property damage.
  • Normal Operating Sounds: The manual details various normal sounds the refrigerator may produce, including humming/whooshing from the compressor and fans, clicks/pops/cracks/chirps from cooling coils and compressor restarts, and water sounds from refrigerant flow and defrost cycles.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning the Outside: Use a soft, clean cloth or sponge with mild detergent and warm water. Approved stainless steel cleaners (e.g., those containing oxalic acid) can be used for surface rust, tarnish, or blemishes on stainless steel. Avoid abrasive cloths, sprays, or cleaners containing ammonia, citrus/plant oils, acids, vinegar, acetone, or bleach, especially on plastic parts.
  • Cleaning the Inside: Unplug the refrigerator before cleaning. Use a solution of one tablespoon (15 ml) of baking soda to one quart (1 liter) of warm water to clean and neutralize odors. Wipe dry. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to door gaskets at the hinge side to prevent sticking. Do not clean cold glass shelves with warm water to avoid breakage. Do not wash plastic parts in the dishwasher.
  • Replacing the LED Light: The LED light is located behind a light lens in the ceiling of the refrigerator section. Instructions involve removing the top shelf (if necessary), dropping the control housing, removing the light lens with a flat head screwdriver, sliding out the LED assembly, disconnecting leads, replacing with a new LED assembly, and snapping the lens back into place. New LED assemblies can be ordered from GE Appliances.
  • Preparing for Vacation: For long absences, remove food, unplug the refrigerator, clean the interior with a baking soda solution, and leave the doors open.
  • Preparing to Move: Remove food, unplug the refrigerator, and secure all loose items (shelves, drawers) with tape. Ensure the refrigerator remains in an upright position during the move.
  • Troubleshooting Tips: A detailed chart helps diagnose common issues such as the refrigerator not operating, vibrations, motor running frequently, compartments being too warm, frost buildup, ice odor/taste, slow ice freezing, refrigerator odor, and moisture issues. Solutions are provided for each problem, often directing users to specific sections of the manual or suggesting simple adjustments.
