Water Filter Cartridge
The water filter cartridge is located in the back upper right
corner of the refrigerator compartment.
When to replace the filter on models with a
replacement indicator light
LCD Models: A pop-up screen will appear on the LCD
screen to remind you to replace the water filter. You can
check the status of the water filter manually.
Access By: Home > Options > Dispenser Options > Reset
Water Filter.
Non-LCD Models: There is a replacement indicator light
for the water filter cartridge on the dispenser. This light will
turn orange to tell you that you need to replace the filter
soon.
The filter cartridge should be replaced when the
replacement indicator light turns red or if the flow of water
to the dispenser or icemaker decreases.
When to replace the filter on models without a
replacement indicator light
The filter cartridge should be replaced every six months
or earlier if the flow of water to the dispenser or icemaker
decreases.

General Installation/Operation/Maintenance
Requirements
 Flush new cartridge at full flow for 4 gallons (about eight
minutes) to purge trapped air.
 Replace cartridge when flow becomes too slow.
 Protect from freezing by removing filter cartridge when
temperatures are expected to drop below 40°F (4.4°C). Do
not install systems in areas where ambient temperatures
may go above 100ºF or below 40°F. Do not install on a hot
water supply.

Function Description

The primary function of the GSWF water filter cartridge is to filter the water supplied to the refrigerator's dispenser and icemaker. Usage Features

Replacement Indicators:

• LCD Models: For refrigerators equipped with an LCD screen, a pop-up reminder will appear on the screen when it's time to replace the water filter. Users can also manually check the filter status by navigating through the menu: Home > Options > Dispenser Options > Reset Water Filter.
• Non-LCD Models: Refrigerators without an LCD screen feature a dedicated replacement indicator light on the dispenser. This light will turn orange to signal that a filter replacement is needed soon. When the light turns red, or if there's a noticeable decrease in water flow from the dispenser or icemaker, it's time to replace the cartridge.
• Models without Indicator Lights: For models lacking a replacement indicator light, the filter cartridge should be replaced every six months or sooner if a reduction in water flow is observed. To assist with this, a month and year sticker can be applied to the new cartridge to serve as a reminder.

Installation Process:

1. Preparation: Before installing a new cartridge, remove the protective foil from its end.
2. Positioning: Insert the cartridge into the cartridge holder.
3. Rotation: Slowly rotate the cartridge to the right (clockwise) until it stops. This typically involves about a 1/4 turn. It's crucial not to overtighten. When correctly installed, the grip blade on the end of the cartridge should be positioned vertically for top-freezer models and horizontally for bottom-freezer models.
4. Closing: Close the cartridge cover.
5. Resetting Indicator (if applicable): For models with a replacement indicator light, press and hold the "RESET WATER FILTER PAD" on the dispenser for three seconds to reset the system.

Post-Installation Flushing:

After installing a new filter cartridge, especially for models with a dispenser, it's recommended to run water from the dispenser for approximately 1-1/2 gallons (about three minutes). This process helps to clear the system of any trapped air and prevent sputtering during initial use. It's normal for a newly installed cartridge to cause water to spurt from the dispenser initially.

Filter Bypass Plug:

In situations where a replacement filter cartridge is not available, a filter bypass plug must be used. This plug is essential to prevent property damage due to water leakage. Without either the filter or the bypass plug, the dispenser and icemaker will not operate.
