Installing Gemini 2
Mount the Gemini 2 to the tripod by bolting it to the two ears on the tripod using the supplied
thumbscrews
Connect the Motor cables using the 6 pin DIN Cables. Make sure you connect the RA motor (short
cable) to the RA connector and the DEC motor (long cable) to the DEC connector on the Gemini 2 unit.
Connect the Hand Controller to the port labeled HC
The power connection is on the right side of the Gemini 2. Power takes 12-18v DC min 2amp
**When you are ready to use the Gemini 2; before you power on the Gemini 2 be sure the RA Axis is
set to pointing at Polaris, your Telescope Optical tube is pointing to Polaris, and the Counter Weight
Shaft is in the down position (This is known as counterweight down position, starting position, and
also CWD).

Overview

The Gemini 2 Quick Start Guide provides comprehensive instructions for setting up and operating the Gemini 2 Controller, an essential component for Losmandy mounts. This guide is designed to help users quickly get started with their astronomical observations, offering step-by-step procedures for installation, initial configuration, and basic operation.

Function Description

The Gemini 2 Controller serves as the brain of your Losmandy mount, enabling precise control over its movements for accurate tracking of celestial objects. Its primary function is to facilitate GoTo capabilities, allowing the mount to automatically slew to desired astronomical targets with high accuracy. The controller manages the RA (Right Ascension) and DEC (Declination) motors, ensuring smooth and precise motion. It also incorporates features for alignment, location and time management, and a user-friendly interface for selecting objects from various catalogs. By integrating GPS functionality (optional) and a robust alignment system, the Gemini 2 ensures that your telescope remains accurately pointed, making it an indispensable tool for both visual observers and astrophotographers. The controller's ability to learn and refine its pointing model over time further enhances its accuracy, adapting to specific mount characteristics and environmental conditions.

Usage Features

The Gemini 2 offers a range of features designed to make its use intuitive and efficient.

  • Initial Setup and Configuration: The guide emphasizes the importance of starting with the mount in the "counterweight down" (CWD) position, with the RA axis and telescope optical tube pointing at Polaris. This ensures a consistent starting point for accurate alignment. Upon powering on, users are guided through a "Quick Start" process, which involves selecting the appropriate mount type (e.g., G11, GM811, HGM-200/M1250, Titan) and entering location and time information. The location input requires longitude and latitude in HH:MM format, with longitude being negative in the Western Hemisphere. The time input uses a military (24-hour) format for date (MM/DD/YY) and time. An optional Losmandy GPS unit can automate location entry, though the timezone still needs manual input. For precise location and time data, an online tool is recommended.

  • User Interface and Navigation: The Gemini 2 features a touch screen interface, though initial calibration is factory-set and usually not required. Navigation is primarily done through on-screen buttons. After initial setup, the "Main Screen" provides access to core functions. The "GoTo" button is central to object selection, leading to options like "Catalog Object," "Solar System," "Coordinate Input," and "Bookmark." A "Bright Star" button allows for quick selection of prominent stars for alignment or observation. Directional buttons are used for fine-tuning the mount's position, and a "SPEED" button adjusts the motor's slew rate. The "MENU" button provides access to additional functions from the Hand Controller.

  • Alignment System: A key feature of the Gemini 2 is its robust alignment system. After selecting an object and slewing to it, users can use the directional buttons to center the object in the eyepiece. Pressing "MENU," then "ALIGN," and finally "Alignment" adds this point to the correction database, improving GoTo accuracy. The guide specifically mentions that a one-star alignment is added to the database for improved GoTo accuracy. This iterative alignment process allows the controller to build a precise model of the sky, compensating for minor mount imperfections or setup inaccuracies.

  • On-the-Fly Alignment and Synchronization: The Gemini 2 supports "on-the-fly" alignment, meaning users can refine the pointing model at any time during an observing session. If an object is not perfectly centered after a GoTo command, users can manually center it with the directional buttons and then perform an alignment. This continuously updates the correction database. A crucial aspect of the Gemini 2's operation is its reliance on motor-driven movement. The manual explicitly states that users should "never 'push' the mount to an object." If the mount is accidentally moved without using the motors, the controller's internal knowledge of its position becomes inaccurate. To re-synchronize, users are instructed to GoTo a known object, center it using the directional buttons, and then press "MENU," "ALIGN," and "Synchronize." This re-establishes the mount's precise location within the Gemini 2's system.

  • YouTube Resources: Losmandy provides extensive support through its YouTube channel, offering setup videos and tutorials. The guide includes a direct link to a playlist specifically for setting up new Losmandy mounts with Gemini, as well as a QR code for mobile access. Users are encouraged to subscribe to the channel and enable notifications for new content.

Maintenance Features

While the manual primarily focuses on initial setup and operation, it implicitly highlights aspects that contribute to the longevity and optimal performance of the Gemini 2.

  • Proper Cable Connection: The guide emphasizes correct cable connections, particularly for the motor cables. The 6-pin DIN cables must be connected to the correct ports: the RA motor (short cable) to the RA connector and the DEC motor (long cable) to the DEC connector. This ensures proper communication and control of the motors, preventing potential damage or malfunction.

  • Power Requirements: The Gemini 2 requires a 12-18V DC power supply with a minimum of 2 amps. Adhering to these specifications is crucial for stable operation and to prevent electrical issues.

  • Physical Mounting: The controller is mounted to the tripod using supplied thumbscrews, bolting it to the two ears on the tripod. This secure physical attachment protects the unit from accidental dislodgement during use.

  • Software Updates (Implied): Although not explicitly detailed as a maintenance feature, the existence of a downloadable PDF guide and the emphasis on YouTube resources suggest that Losmandy provides ongoing support and potentially software updates for the Gemini 2. Keeping the controller's software updated would be a key maintenance practice to ensure optimal performance, access to new features, and bug fixes.

  • Touch Screen Calibration: While factory-set, the option to recalibrate the touch screen is available if needed, indicating a self-correction mechanism for potential display issues.

In summary, the Gemini 2 Quick Start Guide provides a robust framework for users to effectively set up and operate their Losmandy mount with the Gemini 2 Controller. Its emphasis on clear, sequential steps, coupled with accessible online resources, ensures a smooth user experience from initial installation to advanced alignment techniques, ultimately enhancing the enjoyment and precision of astronomical observations.
