Overview

This document is the Owner's Manual for the Generac GP Series Portable Generator, providing comprehensive information on its operation, maintenance, and safety.

Function Description:

The Generac GP Series Portable Generator is a compact, high-performance, air-cooled, engine-driven generator designed to supply electrical power for various loads. It is intended for use in situations where utility power is unavailable or during power outages. The generator is certified to operate on gasoline and complies with EPA and CARB exhaust and evaporative emission standards. It can power a range of electrical devices, from lighting and small appliances to larger tools and motors, depending on the model's wattage capacity.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual details specifications for both 5.5kW and 7.5kW models.

  • Generator Specifications:

    • Rated Power: 5.5/7.5 kW (depending on model)
    • Surge Power: 6.875/9.375 kW
    • Rated AC Voltage: 120/240V
    • Rated AC Load: 22.9/31.3 Amps (240V) and 45.8/62.5 Amps (120V)
    • Rated Frequency: 60 Hz @ 3600 RPM
    • Phase: Single Phase
    • Operating Temperature Range: -18°C (0°F) to 40°C (104°F). Power may decrease above 25°C (77°F).
    • Maximum Wattage/Current: Subject to fuel BTU content, ambient temperature, altitude, and engine condition. Power decreases about 3.5% for every 1,000 feet above sea level.
  • Engine Specifications:

    • Displacement: 389 cc (5.5kW) / 420cc (7.5kW)
    • Spark Plug Type/Part No.: NHSP LDF7TC or Champion N9YC / 0G84420101
    • Spark Plug Gap: 0.028-0.031 inch (0.70-0.80 mm) / 0.030 inch (0.76 mm)
    • Gasoline Capacity: 25.6 Liters (6.77 U.S. gallons) for 5.5kW / 28.4 Liters (7.5 U.S. gallons) for 7.5kW
    • Oil Type: Refer to chart in "Before Starting the Generator" section.
    • Oil Capacity: 1 Liter (1.06 Qts.)
    • Run Time at 50% Load: 10 Hours (5.5kW) / 12 Hours (7.5kW)
    • Emissions Certified: Class II (7.5kW model)
  • Emission Control System Components: Air Induction System (Intake Pipe/Manifold, Air Cleaner), Fuel System (Carburetor, Fuel Tank/Cap, Fuel Lines, Evaporative Vent Lines), Ignition System (Spark Plug, Ignition Module), Exhaust System (Exhaust Manifold, Muffler).

Usage Features:

  • Portability: Equipped with never-flat wheels and a handle assembly for improved mobility.
  • Control Panel: Features 120 VAC, 20 Amp duplex receptacles, and a 120/240 VAC, 30 Amp locking receptacle. Each receptacle has push-to-reset circuit breakers for overload protection.
  • Starting: Available in pull-start and electric-start models. Electric start models include a battery and a 12V charger.
  • Fuel: Uses regular unleaded gasoline (up to 10% ethanol).
  • Oil: Requires SAE 30 oil above 40°F, 10W-30 between 10°F and 40°F, and synthetic 5W-30 below 10°F.
  • Low Oil Level Shutdown: An automatic system that shuts down the engine if the oil level drops below a specified level.
  • Hourmeter: Tracks operating hours for scheduled maintenance, displaying messages for oil changes (every 100 hours) and air filter service (every 200 hours).
  • Grounding: The generator has an equipment ground for portable use. For connection to a building's electrical system, proper grounding by a qualified electrician is required, adhering to NEC 250.34 and 250.20 (D).
  • High Altitude Operation: An altitude kit may be required for proper operation at higher altitudes (3000-8000 ft).
  • Safety: Emphasizes outdoor use only due to deadly carbon monoxide exhaust. Warnings against indoor use, smoking near fuel, and electrical shock are prominent.

Maintenance Features:

  • Scheduled Maintenance: A detailed schedule includes:
    • Every Use: Check oil level.
    • Every 100 Hours or Every Season: Change oil (after first 30 hours of operation, then every season). More frequent changes are needed under heavy load or high temperatures.
    • Every 200 Hours or Every Season: Service air filter. More frequent cleaning/replacement under dirty/dusty conditions.
    • Every Season: Replace spark plug.
    • First 50 Hours, then Every 100 Hours: Check and adjust valve clearance.
  • Cleaning: Exterior surfaces should be wiped clean with a damp cloth. A soft brush or vacuum can remove dirt and debris. Low-pressure air (not exceeding 25 psi) can clear cooling slots. Avoid using a garden hose.
  • Oil Change: Drain old oil when the engine is cool, refill with recommended grade. Dispose of used oil properly.
  • Spark Plug Replacement: Use Champion N9YC or equivalent, replace every 200 hours, and ensure correct gap (0.70-0.80 mm).
  • Air Filter Service: Wash in soapy water, squeeze dry (do not twist), and clean the cover. Replace if necessary.
  • Battery Charging (Electric Start Only): The battery is shipped fully charged but may lose charge over time. A 12V charger is included for recharging. The generator does not charge the battery during operation.
  • Long Term Storage:
    • Add fuel stabilizer and run for 10-15 minutes.
    • Drain all gasoline from the fuel tank after the engine cools.
    • Start and run the engine until it stops from lack of fuel.
    • Drain engine oil and refill with recommended grade.
    • Pour 1/2 ounce (15 ml) of engine oil into the cylinder, cover the spark plug hole, and pull the recoil starter a few times to lubricate piston rings and cylinder bore.
    • Clean outer surfaces and store in a clean, dry place.
    • Do not store with fuel in the tank where vapors can reach an open flame.
    • Do not cover the generator while hot.
  • General Recommendations: Start the generator at least once every 30 days and run for 30 minutes. Regular adjustments are necessary for proper maintenance.
