Overview

The Gigaset DESK 200 is a corded telephone designed for making calls within a phone network, suitable for private use in enclosed indoor areas. It features a classic design with a handset and a base unit, incorporating both essential and convenient functionalities for everyday communication.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Gigaset DESK 200 is to facilitate voice communication over an analogue phone line. It allows users to dial numbers, receive incoming calls, and manage call-related features.

  • Dialing: The telephone includes a standard numeric keypad (0-9, *, #) for manual number entry. It supports both pulse and tone dialing modes, with a sliding switch located below the keypad to select between T1 (Tone dialling, flash time 100 ms), T2 (Tone dialling, flash time 270 / 600 ms), and P (Pulse dialling). This flexibility ensures compatibility with various PABX systems and public telephone networks.
  • Speed Dialing: For frequently called numbers, the DESK 200 offers a speed dial function, allowing users to save up to 10 numbers (each with a maximum of 21 digits) on the number keys (0-9). This feature significantly reduces the time and effort required to dial common contacts.
  • Last Number Redial: The telephone automatically saves the last number dialed, which can be quickly redialed by lifting the handset and pressing the dedicated redial key.
  • Call Indicator: An indicator light on the base unit flashes to signal incoming calls, ensuring users are aware of new calls even if they are not near the handset.
  • Mute Function: During a call, the microphone can be temporarily deactivated using the mute key. An LED on the mute key flashes when the microphone is switched off, providing a visual reminder to the user.
  • Ringer Settings: Users can customize the ringer melody and volume, choosing from 9 levels or turning the ringer off entirely. The factory default is level 6.
  • Handset Volume Control: The handset volume can be adjusted to two levels using a dedicated control key, ensuring comfortable listening during calls. The primary volume resets after hanging up.
  • Recall Key (Flash Function): This key is essential for accessing additional services offered by public telephone systems or PABX systems, such as call waiting, call transfer, or three-party conferences. The flash time can be adjusted to match the requirements of the specific network or PABX.
  • Temporary Tone Dialing (in Pulse Mode): When the telephone is set to pulse dialing mode, users can temporarily switch to tone dialing for the duration of a call by pressing the star key. This is useful for interacting with automated systems like answering machines that require tone input, without needing to change the physical switch.

Usage Features:

The Gigaset DESK 200 is designed for straightforward and user-friendly operation.

  • Setup and Connection: The phone connects to the phone network via a connector cable. The handset connects to the base unit with a short handset cable. The cable can be routed through a cable duct for either tabletop placement or wall mounting.
  • Wall Mounting: The device can be mounted on a wall, requiring two screws (not included) spaced 52 mm horizontally. It is crucial to ensure no power cables or gas pipes are damaged during installation. The maximum installation height for this device is 2 meters.
  • Saving Speed Dial Numbers: To save a speed dial number, the user presses the set key, then the desired speed dial key (0-9), enters the number, and presses the set key again. The mute key LED flashes while the telephone is in set mode, indicating that it is ready for programming.
  • Dialing Pauses: Dialing pauses can be inserted into numbers, which is particularly useful for extension systems (e.g., dialing an external line access code followed by an extension number). The behavior of the pause depends on its position within the saved number.
  • PABX Operation: The telephone is compatible with PABX systems, allowing users to utilize special functions like making enquiries or forwarding calls during an external call by pressing the recall key. The specific procedure depends on the PABX system.
  • Public Telephone System Services: The phone supports accessing various additional services offered by public telephone systems (e.g., call divert, call back on busy, three-party conference) using specified key combinations provided by the network provider. These combinations can also be saved to speed dial keys.
  • Environmental Considerations: The device is intended for operation within a temperature range of +5°C to +40°C and should be kept away from direct sunlight, other heat sources, and dusty environments to ensure optimal performance and longevity. A minimum distance of one meter should be maintained from radio equipment to avoid communication impairment.

Maintenance Features:

Maintaining the Gigaset DESK 200 is simple and focuses on keeping the device clean and addressing potential issues.

  • Cleaning: The device should be wiped with a slightly moistened cloth or an antistatic cloth. Solvents, microfibre cloths, or dry cloths should not be used. Dry cloths can cause static, and solvents or certain chemical substances can affect the device's exterior.
  • Liquid Contact: In case of liquid contact, immediate action is required:
    1. Unplug all cables from the device.
    2. Allow the liquid to drain.
    3. Pat all parts dry.
    4. Place the device in a dry, warm place for at least 72 hours (not in a microwave or oven) with the keypad facing down (if applicable).
    5. Do not switch on the device until it is completely dry. Once fully dried, it should normally be usable again.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides basic troubleshooting steps for common issues:
    • No dial tone: Check if the connecting lead is correctly plugged into the telephone and the telephone socket.
    • Dial tone audible but no dialing: Verify if the dialling mode is set correctly.
    • Other party cannot hear you: Check if the mute function is activated.
    • Regular pulse noises during a call: This indicates metering pulses from the exchange that the telephone cannot interpret; contact the network operator.
  • Repair: Faulty devices should be removed from use and repaired by a service team to prevent interference with other wireless services.
  • Disposal: The product is marked with a crossed-out wheeled bin symbol, indicating that it falls under the European Directive 2012/19/EU and should be disposed of separately from municipal waste via designated collection facilities. This ensures proper recycling and prevents negative environmental and health impacts.
