Paver set up and operation
When the paver is on the job site and before asphalt is dumped into the hopper, the machine
should be sprayed with cleaning fluid (with the spray cleaning system furnished) inside th hopper,
on the bumper rollers, augers, screed extensions, and under the screed.
Check the screed for crown, valley, or level condition. This is accomplished by checking the
indicator for the “0” setting and by sighting the underside of the leading edge of the screed. Adjust
the screed to proper position with the ratchet on the center of the screed. Detach chains holding
the paver to the truck by raising the truck bed. Start the engine, move the hopper wings and tow
hitch arms to the open position.
Connect the tow hitch arms in the rear wheels of the truck. Excessive pressure should not
be applied to the tires; retract the hitch arms only until the side rolls touch the tires of the truck.
To move the paver in position for the first paving pass, put the tailgate hook in the center of the
tailgate of the truck and hook the screed lift chain into the tailgate hook. Raise the screed off the
ground about four inches.
Before beginning to pave, it is essential that the screed be elevated a distance equal
to the desired mat depth plus enough extra height to allow for the mat compaction by rolling.
This is done by placing “ starting blocks” under the screed. If a finished mat depth of two
inches is desired, starting blocks two and one quarter inch thick would provide a suitable
starting height. The starting blocks should be at least as long as the width of the screed wear
plate, and placed length wise with the direction of travel. Place one block under each end of
the screed. If necessary, place additional blocks beneath the screed extensions. This
placement will provide the screed wear plate with bearing surfaces that are essentially
parallel with the grade. Lower the screed, bringing it tow rest upon the starting blocks. With
the screed in this position rotate the screed depth cranks until the screed wear plate is
completely flat on the starting blocks and free rotary travel (no resistance) of the screed
depth crank is attained. Rotate the screed depth cranks an additional one half turn clockwise.
When paving begins check mat depth and adjust screed depth cranks until desired mat depth
is attained. Use the screed depth gauge as a reference point only.
To adjust the PavMaster by Gilcrest paving width from the standard eight feet, simply extend
the hydraulic screed extensions to the desired paving width. The screed extension controls are
located on each operator’s console.
