This document is a Use and Care Guide for Glacier Bay Food Waste Disposers, covering models GB333, GB500, GB750-SL, and GB1000-SL. It provides comprehensive instructions for installation, operation, and maintenance, along with safety information, warranty details, and a troubleshooting guide.
Function Description:
The Glacier Bay Food Waste Disposer is an electrical appliance designed to grind food waste into small particles that can be flushed through the drain system. It is intended for residential use to manage normal food scraps, peelings, rinds, seeds, pits, small bones, and coffee grounds. The disposer is designed for continuous feed operation, allowing food waste to be added while the unit is running.
Important Technical Specifications:
- Voltage and Frequency: The disposer is designed to operate exclusively on 110-120 Volt, 60 Hz electrical current. Using any other voltage or frequency will adversely affect performance and is not recommended.
- Horsepower (HP) Models and Warranty Length:
- 1/3 HP Models: 5 years warranty from date of purchase.
- 1/2 HP Models: 6 years warranty from date of purchase.
- 3/4 HP Models: 10 years warranty from date of purchase.
- 1 HP Models: 12 years warranty from date of purchase.
- Grounding: The appliance must be properly grounded to reduce the risk of electric shock. It is equipped with a cord having an equipment-grounding conductor and a grounding plug, which must be plugged into an appropriate, properly installed, and grounded outlet. For permanent wiring, it must be connected to a grounded, metal, permanent wiring system or an equipment-grounding conductor run with the circuit conductors.
- Motor Lubrication: The motor is permanently lubricated, eliminating the need for external lubrication.
- Self-Cleaning: The disposer is self-cleaning and scours its internal parts with each use.
Usage Features:
- Continuous Feed Operation:
- Remove the sink stopper.
- Turn on a medium flow of cold water.
- Turn the power switch to the ON position. The motor will reach full speed and be ready for use.
- Scrape food waste into the disposer. The unit can handle various food items, including table scraps, peelings, rinds, seeds, pits, small bones, and coffee grounds.
- For large bones, rinds, and cobs, cutting or breaking them up can speed up the grinding process. The disposer may slow down during grinding, which indicates increased torque (grinding power) and is normal.
- After grinding stops, let water and the disposer run for approximately 15 seconds to ensure all waste is thoroughly flushed through the trap and drain.
- It is recommended to use cold water during operation, as it keeps waste and fats solid, allowing particles to flush away more easily.
- Dishwasher Connection: The disposer includes a knockout plug for connecting a dishwasher hose. This allows the dishwasher to drain through the disposer.
- Magnetic Catch Ring (Included with 3/4 HP and 1 HP Models): This feature helps prevent metal objects from falling into the disposer.
- Anti-Jam Swivel Impellers: These impellers make a clicking sound when they initially swing into place, which is normal operation and indicates the unit is functioning correctly.
- Stopper: A stopper is provided to prevent objects from falling into the disposer when not in use.
- Splash Guard: A removable splash guard is included and must be in place during operation.
Maintenance Features:
- Self-Cleaning: The disposer is designed to be self-cleaning, scouring its internal parts with each use.
- No Lubrication Required: The motor is permanently lubricated, so no additional lubrication is needed.
- Odor Control: Periodically cleaning the underneath of the removable splash guard helps keep the disposer free of odors.
- Corrosion Resistance: The stainless-steel turntable will not corrode, even if mineral deposits from water give it the appearance of rust.
- Jam Clearing: In case of a jam, turn off the power switch, remove the splash guard, and use a long wooden object (like a wooden spoon or broom handle) to loosen the jam. For removing objects, use long-handled tongs or pliers.
- Reset Button: The disposer is equipped with a red reset button on the front. If the unit stops due to overload, the reset button may trip. Pushing it in until it clicks will restore power.
- General Precautions: Read all instructions before use. Close supervision is necessary when children are near the appliance.
- Hands and Fingers: Never put fingers or hands into the waste disposer.
- Power Disconnection: Always turn off the power switch before attempting to clear a jam or remove an object.
- Prohibited Items: Do not put clam or oyster shells, caustic drain cleaners, glass, china, plastic, large whole bones, metal (bottle caps, tin cans, aluminum foil, utensils), hot grease, other hot liquids, or whole corn husks into the disposer.
- Splash Guard: Do not operate the disposer unless the splash guard is in place.
- Grounding: Ensure proper grounding to prevent electric shock. Do not modify the plug or use the appliance if the supply cord is damaged.
- Switch Control: The receptacle to which the appliance is connected must be controlled by a switch.
- Children: Keep uninstalled magnetic catch rings away from children. Children should be supervised to ensure they do not play with the appliance.
- Drain Cleaners: Never put lye or chemical drain cleaners into the disposer, as they can cause serious corrosion and void the warranty.
