The Gold's Gym Stride Trainer 380 is an elliptical fitness machine designed for home use, offering a range of features to enhance workouts. This user's manual provides comprehensive instructions for assembly, operation, and maintenance, ensuring a safe and effective exercise experience.
The Stride Trainer 380 is an elliptical machine that allows users to engage in a full-body workout, combining cardiovascular exercise with muscle strengthening. It features a console that provides real-time feedback on workout progress, including time, revolutions per minute (RPM), calories burned, and heart rate. The machine offers adjustable resistance levels, allowing users to customize the intensity of their workouts. Additionally, it includes preset workout programs that automatically adjust resistance and prompt users to vary their pedaling pace, guiding them through effective exercise routines. The elliptical's design incorporates handlebars and upper body arms for a comprehensive workout that engages both the lower and upper body. The pedal discs can be moved in either direction, offering variety in exercise.
Before beginning any exercise program with the Stride Trainer 380, it is crucial to consult a physician, especially for individuals over 35 or those with pre-existing health problems. The elliptical is intended for home use only and should not be used in commercial, rental, or institutional settings. It is designed for users weighing no more than 250 lbs. (113 kg).
To ensure safe operation, the elliptical should be placed on a level surface with at least 3 ft. (0.9 m) of clearance in the front and rear, and 2 ft. (0.6 m) on each side. A mat placed under the elliptical can protect the floor or carpet from damage. Children under 12 and pets should be kept away from the machine at all times.
When mounting or dismounting the elliptical, users should hold the handlebars or upper body arms. To mount, step onto the pedal in the lowest position, then onto the other pedal. To dismount, wait until the pedals come to a complete stop, then step off the highest pedal first, followed by the lowest pedal. The elliptical does not have a freewheel, meaning the pedals will continue to move until the flywheel stops, so users should reduce pedaling speed in a controlled manner.
The console is powered by four D batteries (not included), and alkaline batteries are recommended. If the console has been exposed to cold temperatures, it should be allowed to warm to room temperature before inserting batteries to prevent damage. An optional manufacturer-supplied power adapter can also be used.
To turn on the console, users can press any button or begin pedaling. The display will light up, indicating readiness for use. The manual mode is selected by default, allowing users to adjust pedal resistance using the Resistance dial. Turning the dial clockwise increases resistance, while turning it counterclockwise decreases it. It takes a moment for the pedals to reach the selected resistance level after an adjustment.
The console provides continuous exercise feedback. The first section of the display shows elapsed time and distance (total number of revolutions). The second section shows pedaling pace in RPM. The third section displays approximate calories burned and the resistance level. The display also features a track representing 640 revolutions (1/4 mile or 400 meters), with indicators appearing in succession to show progress. To view total distance pedaled since purchase and total hours of use, press and hold the Smart Workouts button for several seconds.
For heart rate measurement, users can hold the handgrip pulse sensor with their palms resting on the metal contacts. If plastic sheets are present on the contacts, they should be removed. It is important to avoid excessive hand movement or gripping the contacts too tightly for accurate readings. A heart-shaped symbol will flash in the display, and the heart rate will be shown after at least 15 seconds of contact. The pulse sensor is an exercise aid and not a medical device, so accuracy may vary.
The console offers six preset workouts. To select one, users press the Smart Workouts button repeatedly until the desired workout number appears. Each workout is divided into 30 one-minute segments, with programmed resistance levels and pace settings. The workout profile on the display shows progress, with a flashing segment indicating the current segment and its height representing the resistance level. Tones will sound at the end of each segment, and the resistance level will flash to alert users of changes. During preset workouts, the display prompts users to maintain a pace near the target setting, indicating "faster" or "slower" as needed. Users can manually override resistance levels with the Resistance dial, but the pedals will automatically adjust to the next segment's setting.
The elliptical should be moved by two persons due to its size and weight. One person holds the upright, and the other lifts the rear stabilizer, allowing the machine to roll on its front wheels. If the elliptical rocks during use, the leveling feet beneath the rear stabilizer can be adjusted to eliminate the motion.
Regular maintenance is essential for the longevity and proper functioning of the Stride Trainer 380. All parts should be inspected and tightened regularly, and any worn parts should be replaced immediately.
For cleaning, a damp cloth and a small amount of mild dish soap should be used. It is crucial to keep liquids away from the console and to protect the console from direct sunlight. During storage, the batteries should be removed from the console.
If the console display becomes dim, it usually indicates low batteries, and all batteries should be replaced simultaneously. If the handgrip pulse sensor does not function properly, cleaning the metal contacts with a soft cloth is recommended. Alcohol, abrasives, or chemicals should never be used on the contacts.
If the console does not display correct feedback, the reed switch may need adjustment. This process involves removing the stabilizer covers, pedal arms, right pedal disc, and right shield. The reed switch is located near the disc crossbars. Users should loosen the M4 x 16mm Self-tapping Screw, rotate the disc crossbars until a magnet aligns with the reed switch, and then slide the reed switch slightly toward or away from the magnet before retightening the screw. This action should be repeated until the console displays correct feedback.
If the pedals slip even at the highest resistance level, the drive belt may need adjustment. This also requires removing the stabilizer covers, pedal arms, right pedal disc, and both shields. The M8 x 22mm Flat Head Screw should be loosened, and the M10 x 60mm Button Bolt turned until the drive belt is tight, then the screw should be retightened. After any adjustments, all removed shields, discs, and covers must be reattached.
