Motorboats and those with mechanical
propulsion give way to sailing boats.
Sailing boats though give way to musc-
le powered craft, professional shipping,
vessels restricted manoeuvrability, large
slow moving vessels, and professional
shing vessels.
When both boats move with sail/boom
setting on different sides, the boat with
sheets and boom to starboard gives way
to boom and sheets to port. That means,
the boat with the boom to port (left) has
the right of way.
When both boats have the wind on the
same side, the vessel which is to wind-
ward shall keep out of the way of the ves-
sel which is to leeward. That means the
boat closer to the wind has to give way to
the downwind boat.
The overtaking vessel shall keep well
clear of the vessel to be overtaken. Best
is to pass the overtaken vessel by the
stern
The boat with the right of way shall main-
tain its course, and bear off only when
there is a risk of collision.
Never rely on that all sailing yachtsmen
follow or even know the rules of the „right
of way“. Your decision the apply the
„action of the last moment“ is the mano-
euvre to prevent collision at the very last
moment.
