Overview

This document is an installation planning guide for the Grass Valley K-Frame XP Video Production Frames, covering Kayenne, Karrera, and GV Korona control surfaces.

The Grass Valley K-Frame family of multi-format digital production switchers offers powerful features for live studio, mobile, and post-production applications. The core of the system consists of Video Processors (Standard, Compact, S-series, V-series, GV K-Frame X, and GV K-Frame XP) that provide extensive video switching and signal processing. Control is achieved through Kayenne, Karrera, or GV Korona control surfaces, the Soft Panel (KSP option), or a Menu application running on a PC. The system also supports direct control of external devices (DDRs, Servers) and bi-directional control with routing and automation systems.

Function Description:

The GV K-Frame XP is a fully digital 10-bit 4:2:2 video switcher with support for 4K, HDR (HLG and PQ), 1080p, and 2160p. It offers SDI (720p and 1080p level-A) and IP I/O (1080p level-A, 2160p for GV K-Frame XP). Optional smart I/O modules provide up/down/cross-conversion when licensed with SetDef and MatchDef. Maintenance Features:

  • FCC Compliance: Requires high-quality triple-screened Media or Monitor cable assemblies with integrated ferrite suppression at both ends.
  • Safety Information: Emphasizes reading and following safety guidelines, especially regarding electric shock. Symbols indicate dangerous high voltage, important instructions, fuse ratings, protective grounding terminals, static sensitive components, and multiple power supply cords.
  • Warnings: Includes general warnings about using appropriate power cords, ensuring short-circuit protection, qualified service personnel for cover removal, avoiding wet conditions, proper grounding, cable routing, disconnecting power before cleaning, avoiding exposed connections, high leakage current, removing jewelry, using specified fuse types, and avoiding explosive atmospheres.
  • Cautions: Advises on proper lift points, avoiding mechanical hazards, qualified service personnel for safety checks, installation by trained personnel, careful installation procedures, restricted access locations, not attaching power cords to building surfaces, accessible power outlets for products without on/off switches, correct voltage settings, proper ventilation, not operating with suspected equipment failure, and plugging power cords into separate branch circuits with separate service grounds.
  • Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Protection: Recommends ensuring the frame is earth-grounded, wearing an ESD wrist strap, and storing cards in ESD bags.
  • Battery Handling: Warns of explosion risk if batteries are replaced incorrectly. Specifies replacement with the same or equivalent type and disposal according to manufacturer instructions. Batteries should only be replaced by trained service technicians.
  • LCD and TFT Display Cautions: Advises on vision rest, careful handling of broken glass fragments, and avoiding contact with liquid crystal fluid.
  • Power Supply Redundancy: 8RU Frame is supplied with two power modules, with an option for a third (n+1 redundancy). 15RU Frame is supplied with three power modules, with an option for a fourth (n+1 redundancy).
  • Rack Mounting: For 8RU GV K-Frame XP, caution is advised when mounting below equipment that extends forward from the rack, as it may block door removal. For 15RU GV K-Frame XP, the power supply frame is ideally rack mounted immediately above the Video Processor chassis to provide support and allow front door removal.
  • Airflow: 8RU Video Processor has air intake at the front and exhaust at the rear (8 fans). 15RU Video Processor has air intake at the front (DO NOT BLOCK) and exhaust at the top and rear. The 15RU Power Supply Frame has recessed air holes at the top for airflow, which must remain unobstructed.
  • PCU to Control Panel Cables: Caution against connecting or disconnecting multi-pin cables while the PCU is powered on to prevent damage.
  • Satellite Panel Internal Cabling: RJ-45 connectors inside Satellite Panel trays are for proprietary communications only; plugging Ethernet devices into them may cause damage.
  • Network Isolation: The facility network for the GV K-Frame XP system should be kept separate from any external network to prevent traffic from adversely affecting system operation.
