The Grundfos UP(S) 15 circulator is a pump designed for domestic hot water recirculation, suitable for indoor use. These pumps are available with an optional digital timer and come with a power cable for electrical connection. The UP(S) 15 series pumps with stainless steel or bronze volutes can be used in both open and closed systems.
The primary function of the Grundfos UP(S) 15 circulator is to circulate water in domestic hot water systems. This ensures that hot water is readily available at fixtures without long waiting times, contributing to water and energy efficiency. The pump is designed to handle clean, thin, non-aggressive, and non-explosive liquids, free from solid particles, fibers, or mineral oils. A 50% by volume solution of propylene glycol and water can also be used, though this may lead to a decrease in pump performance due to increased viscosity.
The pump operates by moving water through the system, with arrows on the side or bottom of the pump housing indicating the direction of flow. It is crucial to install the pump with the motor shaft positioned horizontally to ensure proper operation. The circulator can be installed in both vertical and horizontal lines, but it should not be installed with the motor shaft vertical or below the horizontal plane.
The optional digital timer enhances the pump's functionality by allowing users to program specific ON/OFF events. This feature enables the pump to operate only when needed, further optimizing energy consumption. The timer includes settings for the current time, date, Daylight Saving Time (DST), and region, which automatically adjusts sunrise and sunset times for programmed events. Users can select various operating modes, including manual ON/OFF, automatic ON/OFF, and random ON/OFF, the latter providing a "lived-in look" by adjusting scheduled events by ±30 minutes.
The pump also features a speed selector, allowing users to adjust the pump's speed to "H" (High), "M" (Medium), or "L" (Low) to suit system requirements. This flexibility helps in balancing performance with energy efficiency.
Before installation, it is essential to thoroughly clean and flush the system to prevent dirt and sediment from affecting pump operation. If suspended particles are present, installing a strainer and/or filter is recommended, with regular cleaning of these components. A vent should be installed at the highest point(s) of the system to remove trapped air.
For electrical connection, the pump's 115 V plug should be inserted into a properly grounded 115 V electrical outlet. If the optional timer is used, it should first be plugged into a 115 V electrical outlet, and then the pump's power cable should be plugged into the timer's outlet. Care must be taken to route the power cable away from the exhaust vent pipe of gas- or oil-fired water heaters.
The terminal box position can be adjusted if necessary, but this should ideally be done before installing the pump. If adjusted after installation, the power supply must be switched off and the power cable unplugged. Isolating valves should be closed before removing the hex socket head screws to rotate the stator to the desired terminal box orientation. After reassembly, the hex socket head screws must be tightened diagonally and evenly to 7 ft.-lb. torque. It is important to check that the motor shaft turns freely after reassembly; if not, the disassembly/reassembly process should be repeated.
The digital timer requires initial charging by plugging it into an AC outlet for at least 30 minutes. If the display is not visible, pressing the [RESET] button will restart the timer and erase all settings. The timer can be unplugged from the AC outlet for easier setting.
Setting the timer involves a sequence of steps:
To change the pump speed, the power cable must be disconnected from the power supply, and the speed selector gently rotated to the desired setting (H, M, L).
Grundfos UP(S) 15 pumps are designed to be maintenance-free, requiring no routine service. However, in case the pump does not run when first started, the shaft may need manual rotation. This involves:
Regular cleaning of strainers and filters, if installed, is important to maintain system efficiency. It is also recommended to keep the operating water temperature as low as possible (below 140 °F (60 °C)) to prevent calcium precipitation, which can affect pump performance over time.
For disposal, the product or its parts should be handled in an environmentally sound way, either through public or private waste collection services or by contacting a Grundfos company or service workshop. End-of-life information is also available on the Grundfos website.
