Overview

This document describes the BADLAND 48 IN. FARM JACK, a lifting device designed for various applications including lifting, clamping, and winching. It is a robust tool intended for use on a hard, level, and stable surface capable of supporting the jack and the load.

Function Description

The Farm Jack is primarily used for lifting vehicles or other heavy loads. It operates by a mechanical ratcheting action, where the handle is moved up and down to incrementally raise or lower the load. The device features a Reversing Latch that allows the user to switch between lifting and lowering modes. In addition to lifting, the jack can be configured for clamping by turning the Clamp-Clevis 90 degrees to the Rail and tightening a nut. It can also be used for winching by attaching chains or tow straps to the Clamp-Clevis and the Large Runner, then operating the jack in a similar manner to raising a load.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model: 58395
  • Height: 48 inches
  • Minimum Lift Height: 4-1/2 inches
  • Maximum Lift Height: 41 inches
  • Rated Load: 5,000 lb.

Usage Features

The manual emphasizes several critical safety precautions for operating the Farm Jack:

  • Surface Requirements: Must be used on a hard, level, solid, and stable surface.
  • Vehicle Preparation: Before use, the vehicle must be parked safely away from traffic, engine off, transmission in "PARK" (automatic) or lowest gear (manual), emergency brake set, and wheels chocked.
  • Load Support: Loads must be supported by appropriate means (e.g., jack stands) immediately after lifting. Always use two jack stands and position them at the same point on each side of the vehicle, centering the vehicle's lifting points on the saddles of the jack stands.
  • Handle Operation: When lowering the load, the jack handle will exert an upward force that must be resisted by the user's hands in a controlled manner. The jack requires a load of 150 lb or more to lower with handle movement; for loads below 150 lb, the lifting mechanism will slide down the rail to the base.
  • Angle of Use: The Farm Jack must remain at a 90° angle during use to prevent serious injury.
  • Clearance: Users must keep their head, body, and hands clear of the handle path and the gap between the Handle and Rail during operation.
  • Handle Position: When the jack is under load or when changing between lifting and lowering, the handle must be in the upright position and clipped to the main rail.
  • Attachments: Only attachments and/or adapters supplied by the manufacturer should be used.
  • Personal Protective Equipment: ANSI-approved safety goggles and heavy-duty work gloves are recommended during use.
  • Dynamic Loading: Users should be aware that sudden load movement can create dynamic loading, potentially leading to product failure.
  • Clamping: The Clamp-Clevis can be connected anywhere along the Rail for clamping.
  • Winching: For winching, one end of a chain or tow strap (sold separately) is attached to the top Clamp-Clevis, and the other end to a fixed, stable object. A second chain or tow strap is attached to the Large Runner on the jack and the object to be winched. The jack is then operated as if raising a load.

Maintenance Features

Regular inspection and maintenance are crucial for the safe and effective operation of the Farm Jack:

  • Pre-Use Inspection: Before each use, inspect the equipment for loose hardware, misalignment or binding of moving parts, cracked or broken parts, or any other condition that might affect its safe operation.
  • Lubrication: Moving parts of the jack must be lubricated with lubricating oil. It is important not to use motor oil or grease for lubrication.
  • Rail Maintenance: The front and back of the Steel Rail must be kept rust-free. Using the jack without proper lubrication can lead to poor performance and damage.
  • Post-Use Cleaning: After each use, the tool should be cleaned with a clean cloth.
  • Storage: Store the jack in a safe, dry location, out of reach of children and unauthorized persons. The handle should be placed in an upright, clipped position against the Steel Standard Bar, and the Reversing Latch should be raised and locked in the up position.
  • Damage: Do not use damaged equipment. If abnormal noise occurs, the problem should be corrected before further use. Any repairs not specifically explained in the manual must be performed by a qualified technician. The load must be removed from the jack before any maintenance procedure.
