Do you have a question about the Harken 35.2 ST Series and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

This document is an installation and maintenance manual for the Harken Radial Winch 35.2 ST. It provides comprehensive technical information for specialized personnel and expert users regarding the installation, disassembly, reassembly, and maintenance of the winch.

The Harken Radial Winch 35.2 ST is a marine winch designed for handling lines on sailboats. It is available in several versions, distinguished by their drum material:

  • ST A version: Drum in anodized aluminum.
  • ST C/CW versions: Drum in chrome bronze (C) or chrome/white (CW).
  • ST BBB/CCC versions: All bronze (BBB) or all-chrome bronze (CCC).

Important Technical Specifications:

The winch offers two speeds with distinct power and gear ratios:

  • 1st speed: Power ratio of 13.50:1, Gear ratio of 2.13:1.
  • 2nd speed: Power ratio of 35.90:1, Gear ratio of 5.65:1. It's important to note that these theoretical power ratios do not account for friction.

The weight of the winch varies by version:

  • ST A version: 3.6 Kg
  • ST C/CW versions: 4.8 Kg
  • ST BBB/CCC versions: 5.5 Kg

A critical safety specification is the Maximum Working Load (MWL), which for the 35.2 ST Radial Winch is 650 Kg (1433 lb). Exceeding this load can lead to winch failure or sudden detachment from the deck, potentially causing severe injury or death.

The physical dimensions of the winch include an outside diameter of Ø149 mm and a height of 170 mm, with a line entry height of 80 mm. The drilling cut-out template for installation specifies five Ø6 mm holes positioned at specific angles (35°, 50°, 70°, 105°) on a Ø123 mm bolt circle.

Usage Features:

The manual outlines two primary installation procedures:

  • Procedure 1: Involves removing the drum and using Socket Head (SH) bolts for mounting. This requires unscrewing a central screw (2Nm/18 in-lb), sliding off the assy socket and cover, unscrewing three additional screws (4Nm/35 in-lb), and then removing the self-tailing arm.
  • Procedure 2 (not pertinent for ST BBB/CCC versions): Requires removing the winch skirt and using hexagonal headed bolts. This involves carefully prying off the skirt with a screwdriver.

Proper installation is paramount for safety and performance. The winch must be installed on a flat, reinforced deck area capable of bearing at least twice the winch's MWL. The installer is responsible for structural tests and selecting appropriate A4 stainless steel (DIN 267 part11) M6 mounting bolts, as Harken does not supply them. Countersunk bolts should not be used.

A crucial aspect of installation is the sheet entry angle, which must be 8° with a tolerance of ±2°. Incorrect angles can lead to sheet overrides, winch damage, or loss of boat control. The drive gear should be positioned where the sheet enters the winch drum, and for STA, STC, and STCW versions, an icon on the skirt identifies the drive gear position.

The self-tailing arm should be positioned so that the line leaving the winch is led into the cockpit.

Maintenance Features:

Regular and thorough maintenance is essential for the longevity and safe operation of the Harken Radial Winch 35.2 ST.

  • Washing: Winches must be washed frequently with fresh water, ideally after each use. Harsh cleaning products, solvents, polishes, or abrasive pastes should be avoided, especially on anodized, chrome-plated, or plastic parts, as they can damage the winch and its logos/stickers.
  • Drainage: Ensure that all holes and drainage channels in the winch base are clear to prevent water accumulation.
  • Periodic Inspection and Overhaul: Winches require visual inspection at the beginning and end of each sailing season. A complete overhaul, cleaning, and lubrication are recommended every 12 months. Any worn or damaged components must be replaced with original Harken parts.
  • Disassembly for Maintenance: The disassembly procedure involves steps similar to Procedure 1 for installation, including removing the central screw, assy socket, cover, self-tailing arm, drum support, and various gears, pawls, and washers. Specific torque values are provided for reassembly.
  • Cleaning: After disassembly, all metal parts should be cleaned with a residue-free degreaser, and plastic parts rinsed with fresh water, then thoroughly dried.
  • Lubrication: Gears, gear pins, teeth, and all moving parts should be lightly lubricated with Harken® grease using a brush. Pawls and springs require light lubrication with Harken® pawl oil; grease should not be used on pawls, as excessive grease can compromise winch safety. The manual provides an exploded view with specific lubrication points indicated for anti-seize, grease, and pawl oil.
  • Jaws Replacement: If necessary, the winch jaws can be replaced by unscrewing four screws (4Nm/35 in-lb) and removing the jaws. When reassembling, the peeler should be inserted between the two jaws with the "TOP" letters facing upwards. Pawls are assembled by correctly positioning the spring in its housing, holding it closed, and sliding the pawl into place.

Harken emphasizes that installation and maintenance should only be performed by specialized personnel. In case of doubt, Harken Tech Service (techservice@harken.it) should be contacted. The manual also includes information on Harken's limited worldwide warranty and how to order spare parts, requiring the part number from the parts list and the winch's serial number (found on a plate on the drum support). Contact information for Harken Italy S.p.A. and Harken, Inc. (Headquarters) is provided for technical and customer service inquiries.
