On largediameter trees,stop the back cut
beforeitisdeepenoughforthetreetoeither
fallor settle back on the stump. Then insert
softwoodenorplasticwedgesintothecutso
theydonottouchthechain.Thewedgescan
bedrivenin,littlebylittle,tohelpjackthetree
over.See Figure 15.
Astreestartstofall,stopthechainsawandput
itdownimmediately.Retreatalongthecleared
path,butwatchtheactionincasesomething
fallsyour way. Bealert for overhead limbsor
branchesthatmayfallandwatchyourfooting.
WARNING:
Nevercutthroughtothenotchwhenmakinga
backcut.Thehingecontrolsthefallofthetree,
thisisthesectionofwoodbetweenthenotch
andbackcut.
BUCKING

Buckingisthetermusedforcuttingafallentree
tothedesiredloglength.
Alwaysmakesureyourfootingissecureand
yourweightisdistributedevenlyonbothfeet.
Cutonlyonelogatatime.
Supportsmalllogsonasawhorseoranother
logwhilebucking.
Keepaclearcuttingarea.Makesurethatno
objects can contact the guide bar nose and
chainduringcutting,thiscancausekickback.

Whenbuckingonaslope,alwaysstandonthe
uphillsideofthelog.Tomaintaincompletecon-
trolofthechainsawwhencuttingthroughthe
log,releasethecuttingpressureneartheendof
thecutwithoutrelaxingyourgriponthechain
sawhandles.Donotletthechaincontactthe
ground.Aftercompletingthecut,waitforthe
sawchaintostopbeforeyoumovethechain
saw.Alwaysstopthemotorbeforemovingfrom
tree to tree.
