OPERATION
BUCKING LOGS UNDER STRESS

Whenthelogissupportedalongitsentirelength,
itshouldbecutfromthetoporoverbucking.
Whenthelogissupportedononeend,cut1/3
thediameter fromtheunderside or underbuck-
ing.Thenmakethefinishingcutbyoverbucking
tomeetthefirstcut.
Asthelogisbeingcut,itwilltendtobend.Thesaw
canbecomepinchedorhunginthelogifyoumake
thefirstcutdeeperthan1/3ofthediameterofthelog.
Givespecialattentiontologsunderstresstopre-
ventthebarandchainfrompinching.
TYPES OF CUTTING USED

OVERBUCKING
Beginonthetopsideofthelogwiththebottom
ofthe saw against the log; exert light pressure
downward. Note that thesawwill tend to pull
away from you.
UNDERBUCKING
Beginontheundersideofthelogwiththetop
ofthe saw against the log; exert light pressure
upward.Duringunderbucking,thesawwilltend
topushbackatyou.Bepreparedforthisreaction
andholdthesawfirmlytomaintaincontrol.
LIMBING
See Figure 20.
WARNING:
Neverclimb into a treeto limbor prune. Do
not stand on ladders, platforms, a log, or in
anypositionwhichcancauseyoutoloseyour
balance or control of the saw, which could
resultindeathorotherseriouspersonalinjury.
Limbingisremovingbranchesfromafallentree.
Workslowly,keepingbothhandsonthechain
sawwith a firmgrip. Always makesureyour
footingissecureandyourweightisdistributed
evenlyonbothfeet.
Leavethelargersupportlimbsunderthetreeto
keepthetreeoffthegroundwhilecutting.
