Question and Answer IconNeed help?

Do you have a question about the Harvia PC90XW and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Harvia PC70XE, PC70XW, PC90XE, and PC90XW electric sauna heaters are designed for heating sauna rooms to bathing temperature. They are not to be used for any other purpose. These instructions cover installation, use, and maintenance, and should be read carefully by the sauna owner, the person responsible for its operation, and the electrician performing the installation.

Function Description

The sauna heater operates by heating sauna stones, which then radiate heat into the sauna room. Water can be thrown onto the heated stones to generate steam and increase humidity, creating a "löyly" effect. The heater is controlled via a separate control panel (WX380 or WX694 for WiFi models), which allows users to adjust temperature, set operating times, and manage other functions.

The control panel features a display that shows the set temperature and remaining on-time. It includes menu and navigation buttons for adjusting values and changing settings, as well as dedicated buttons for turning the heater and sauna lighting on/off. The system supports a standby mode, an energy-saving mode, and can be configured for remote control.

Remote Control: The heater can be controlled remotely if equipped with a safety switch (e.g., Harvia SFE) or a door switch.

  • With a safety switch: The heater can be turned on remotely if the safety switch circuit is closed. If the circuit is open, "SAFE" is displayed, and the heater will not start.
  • With a door switch: Remote use mode must be activated by pressing the heater button for three seconds. If the door switch circuit is open, "door OPEn" is displayed, and the heater returns to standby mode. If the circuit is closed, remote use mode is activated, and "rc on" is displayed while the heater button blinks, allowing remote start. If the door is opened during remote use, "door OPEn" is displayed, and the heater returns to standby mode.
  • Pause Time: A pause time feature prevents the heater from turning on if less than 6 hours have passed since its last shutdown. Attempting to start it remotely during this period will display "rESt." Remote start is possible after the pause time has elapsed and "rc" is displayed.
  • Memory for Power Failures: If enabled, the heater resumes operation after a power outage if the remote switch remained in the ON position. If disabled, a power outage will shut down the system, requiring a manual restart via the I/O button.
  • Preset Time: If the heater is set for a preset delay time, it cannot be controlled remotely until the delay has passed and the heater has turned on.

Important Technical Specifications

The PC70XE and PC70XW models have an output of 6.8 kW, while the PC90XE and PC90XW models have an output of 9.0 kW. All models weigh 10 kg (without stones) and have dimensions of 320x320x930 mm (width/depth/height). They require 90 kg of sauna stones with a recommended diameter of 5-10 cm.

    • PC90XE/XW (9.0 kW): 3 x 10 mm² cable, 1 x 50 A fuse.

The junction box for electrical connections must be splash-proof and located no higher than 500 mm from the floor. Connecting cables must be rubber cable type H07RN-F or equivalent, with PVC-insulated wire forbidden due to thermal embrittlement. Cables installed higher than 1000 mm from the floor must withstand at least 170 °C (e.g., SSJ).

Safety Distances (min. mm):

  • A (to wall): 100 mm
  • B (to lower bench): 100 mm
  • C (to upper bench): 950 mm
  • D (to ceiling): 30 mm
  • E (to front): 50 mm
  • F (to side): 520 mm

The temperature sensor (H) must be installed as shown in Figure 8. If the heater is more than 100 mm from the wall, the sensor must be installed on the ceiling. The supply air vent should not be near the temperature sensor to avoid inaccurate readings and potential overheating. Minimum distances from the air vent to the sensor are 1000 mm for omnidirectional vents and 500 mm for directed vents.

The control panel (E) is splash-proof and low voltage. It can be installed in the washroom, dressing room, or living quarters. If installed in the sauna room, it must be at least the minimum safety distance from the heater and a maximum of one meter from the floor.

Usage Features

Piling of Sauna Stones: Proper piling is crucial for safety and heating. Stones should be 5-10 cm in diameter and washed before piling. A dense layer of stones should be piled against the steel grid, with the rest piled loosely to allow air circulation. Special attention should be paid to corners near heating elements. Rounded stones should only be used in outer layers if heating elements are in contact with stones. Ceramic and decorative stones require manufacturer approval and should only be used on the top layer, placed loosely to ensure airflow, and not touching heating elements.

Heating the Sauna: When first used, the heater and stones may emit odors, so ensure good ventilation. A properly insulated sauna with an appropriately sized heater will reach bathing temperature (60-75 °C) in about an hour.

Casting Water (Löyly): To increase humidity, throw water onto the heated stones. The ladle capacity should not exceed 0.2 liters. Avoid throwing excessive amounts of water at once or when people are near the heater, as hot steam can cause burns. Use only clean household water (Table 1) and sauna fragrances approved for sauna use.

Sauna Bathing Instructions:

  • Start by washing.
  • Stay in the sauna as long as comfortable.
  • Relax and forget worries.
  • Be considerate of other bathers (avoid loud behavior).
  • Do not force others out with excessive water.
  • Cool down as needed; swimming is an option if available.
  • Wash after bathing.
  • Rest and rehydrate with fresh water or a soft drink.

Warnings:

  • Prolonged exposure to a hot sauna can be dangerous.
  • Heater stones and metal parts become very hot; avoid contact to prevent burns.
  • Keep children away from the heater.
  • Children, handicapped, sick, or frail individuals should not be left unsupervised in the sauna.
  • Consult a doctor for health-related limitations.
  • Discuss sauna use for small children with a pediatrician.
  • Move carefully in the sauna as benches and floors can be slippery.
  • Do not enter a hot sauna under the influence of alcohol, strong medicines, or narcotics.
  • Never sleep in a hot sauna.
  • Sea air and humid climates can corrode metal surfaces.
  • Do not use the sauna as a drying room for clothes, as this poses a fire risk and can damage electrical equipment due to excessive moisture.

Maintenance Features

Stone Maintenance: Due to temperature variations, sauna stones disintegrate over time. Rearrange the stones at least once a year, or more frequently with heavy use. Remove stone pieces from the bottom of the heater and replace disintegrated stones with new ones. This ensures optimal heating and prevents overheating. Pay special attention to the gradual settling of stones, ensuring heating elements remain covered. Stones settle most rapidly within the first two months of use.

Sauna Room Hygiene: Use bench towels to prevent sweat from reaching the benches. The benches, walls, and floor of the sauna should be thoroughly washed at least every six months using a scrubbing brush and sauna detergent. Dust and dirt should be wiped from the heater with a damp cloth. Lime stains can be removed with a 10% citric acid solution, followed by rinsing.

Troubleshooting:

  • Heater not heating: Check fuses, connection cable, control panel temperature setting, and overheat protector (▷3.5.).
  • Slow heating/stones cool quickly: Check fuses, heating elements, temperature setting, heater output (▷2.3.), stone piling (▷1.1.), and ventilation (▷2.2.).
  • Fast heating/stones not hot enough: Check heater output (▷2.3.) and ventilation (▷2.2.).
  • Blackening of nearby materials: Check safety distances (▷3.2.), stone piling (▷1.1.), and ensure heating elements are covered. Refer to section 2.1.1 for causes of blackening.
  • Heater emits smell: Refer to section 1.2. Hot heaters can intensify existing odors not caused by the sauna or heater (e.g., paint, glue, oil, seasoning).

Overheat Protector Reset: The sensor box contains an overheat protector that cuts off power if the ambient temperature rises too high. To reset, press the button shown in Figure 11, but first determine the cause of the trip.

Warranty: The guarantee period for heaters and control equipment is two (2) years for family use and one (1) year for communal use in multi-dwelling buildings. The warranty does not cover faults due to improper installation, use, or maintenance, nor does it cover faults caused by using stones not recommended by the manufacturer. Only original spare parts should be used.
