Overview

This document outlines the instructions for the "Hungry Hungry Hippos" game, a classic marble-gobbling game designed for 2 to 4 players, ages 4 and up. The primary function of the game is to provide an engaging and competitive experience where players race to make their hippos "eat" the most marbles.

Function Description:

The core function of Hungry Hungry Hippos is to simulate a feeding frenzy among four colorful hippos. Each player controls one hippo, and the objective is to gobble up as many plastic marbles as possible. The game promotes quick reflexes, hand-eye coordination, and a sense of friendly competition. The game base serves as the central arena where the marbles are released and the hippos operate. Each hippo is equipped with a mechanism that allows it to extend its neck and mouth to capture marbles, then retract to "swallow" them into a designated collecting area. The game concludes when all marbles have been gobbled, and the player whose hippo has collected the most marbles is declared the winner.

Usage Features:

The game is designed for straightforward assembly and intuitive play, making it accessible for young children.

  • Assembly and Game Setup:

    • Part Identification: The manual begins by identifying the various components: game base, hippo bodies, hippo heads, marble launchers & guides, plastic marbles, and a label sheet. A visual aid (Figure 1) helps players understand the assembled game's appearance.
    • Marble Launcher Attachment: The first step involves attaching the four marble launchers to the game base. Figures 2A and 2B clearly illustrate how to insert each launcher into its designated slot, ensuring a secure fit for proper marble release during play.
    • Hippo Body Attachment: Next, players attach the hippo bodies to the game base. This is achieved by sliding the hippo's front tabs into the side of the base, then pressing down and inward until the hippo locks securely into place. Figures 3A and 3B provide visual guidance for this crucial step, emphasizing the importance of a secure lock before play begins.
    • Hippo Head Attachment: The hippo heads are attached by fitting a peg on the head into a hole on one side of the hippo body, then rotating and attaching the other side. Figure 4 demonstrates this process, ensuring the hippos are complete and ready for action.
    • Label Application: Players are instructed to apply matching-color name and eye labels to each hippo, enhancing the visual appeal and helping players identify their chosen character. Figure 1 again serves as a reference for correct label placement.
    • Hippo Activation: To activate each hippo, players hold down its tail and pull its neck out and down to release it from a tab. Figure 5 illustrates this action. Players are then advised to press and release the hippo's tail a few times to ensure its neck moves forward and backward easily, confirming the mechanism is ready for play.
    • Marble Placement: Before starting, each player chooses a hippo and places 5 marbles into the marble release area located to the right of their hippo. Figure 1 shows the correct placement of these marbles.
  • Gameplay:

    • Standard Game:
      • Starting the Game: The youngest player initiates the game by pressing their marble launcher to release one marble into the central arena.
      • Marble Gobbling: Once a marble is released, all players simultaneously begin pressing and releasing their hippo's tail. This action causes the hippo's neck to extend and retract, attempting to gobble up the marble.
      • Turn Progression: After a marble is successfully gobbled, the player to the left of the previous launcher takes their turn, launching another marble. This continues until all marbles have been released and collected.
      • Winning Condition: Players count the marbles collected in their hippo's designated collecting area. The player with the most marbles wins the game.
    • Advanced Game:
      • Simultaneous Launch: In the advanced version, all players launch all of their marbles at the same time.
      • Frenzy Mode: Players then quickly try to make their hippos gobble as many marbles as possible in a free-for-all.
      • Winning Condition: Similar to the standard game, the player with the most marbles collected after all marbles are gone is the winner.

Maintenance Features:

The manual also provides guidance for basic troubleshooting and storage, ensuring the longevity of the game.

  • Storing Your Game:

    • Disassembly for Storage: To store the game, players pull each hippo up and out of the game base.
    • Neck Locking: The hippo's neck should be locked in place by pressing its tail and lifting the neck up onto the front tab.
    • Component Storage: Marbles are placed in the marble collecting areas, and then the game base and hippos are placed back into the box.
  • Troubleshooting (Does Your Hippo Need Help?):

    • Reattaching a Lost Head: If a hippo's head becomes detached, players are directed to reattach it as shown in Figure 4, fitting the peg into the hole and rotating it into place.
    • Reattaching a Detached Neck: If a hippo's neck becomes detached, a specific sequence of steps is provided:
      1. Carefully lift the marble guide up and out (Figure 6A).
      2. Reattach the neck as shown in Figure 6B.
      3. Reattach the marble guide.

These instructions ensure that common issues can be resolved easily, allowing for continued enjoyment of the game. The overall design emphasizes user-friendliness, from initial setup to gameplay and eventual storage or repair.
