SAFE OPERATION PRACTICES FOR WALKBEHIND MOWERS
Training
1. Carefully read the Owner’s Handbook. Be thor-
oughly familiar with the controls and the proper
use of the equipment.
2. Never allow children to operate a power mower.
Do not allow adults to operate it without proper in-
structions.
3. Keep the area of operation clear of all persons,
particularly small children.
4. Make sure the engine has stopped before leaving
the operator’s position.
Preparation
1. Thoroughly inspect the mower and area where
the equipment is to be used. Remove all stones,
sticks, wires, bones, and other foreign objects
which might be thrown causing an injury or dam-
age.
2. Always wear substantial footwear. Do not oper-
ate the equipment when barefoot or wearing
open shoes.
3. Always wear safety glasses or an eye shield
when you operate the unit to protect your eyes
from foreign objects that can be thrown from the
unit. Always wear eye protection when you make
adjustments or repairs.
4. Check the fuel before starting the engine. Do not
fill the petrol tank indoors, when the engine is run-
ning, or until the engine has been allowed to cool
for several minutes after running. Do not smoke
while refuelling. Clean off any spilled petrol be-
fore starting the engine.
5. Disengage the drive clutch before starting the en-
gine.
6. Never attempt to make any adjustments to items
such as the wheel height or grass catcher while
the engine is running.
7. Plan your mowing pattern to avoid discharge of
material toward roads, pavements, bystanders
and the like.
Operation
1. Do not change the engine governor settings or
overspeed the engine.
2. Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating
parts. Keep clear of the discharge opening at all
times.
3. Always be sure of your footing. Keep a firm hold
on the handle and walk, never run. Never operate
the equipment in wet grass.
4. Stop the engine when crossing gravel drives,
walks, or roads.
5. After striking a foreign object, stop the engine.
Remove the wire from the spark plug. Inspect the
blade and mower for damage. If damaged, repair
before starting and operating the mower.
6. If the equipment should start to vibrate abnormal-
ly, stop the engine, and check immediately for the
cause. Vibration is generally a warning of trouble,
such as a blade that is damaged, a loose blade,
or the engine mounting bolts are loose.
7. Stop the engine; whenever you leave the equip-
ment, before cleaning the mower housing, and
when making any repairs, inspections, or adjust-
ments (except for carburettor).
8. When cleaning, repairing, or inspecting, make
certain the blade and all moving parts have
stopped. Disconnect the spark plug wire, and
keep the wire away from the plug to prevent acci-
dental starting.
9. Do not run the engine indoors.
10. Shut the engine off and wait until the blade comes
to a complete stop before removing the grass
catcher or unclogging the chute.
11. Mow across slopes; never up and down. Exercise
extreme caution when changing directions on
slopes. Do not mow excessively steep slopes
(maximum 10 degrees) or areas where the
ground is very rough. See the Guide" in the back
of this manual to check a slope.
12. Never operate the mower without proper guards,
deflectors, safety controls, plates, or other safety
protective devices in place.
13. Use extreme caution when reversing or pulling
the mower towards you.
14. Mow only in daylight or in good artificial light.
15. Do not operate this machine if you are taking
drugs or other medication which can cause
drowsiness or affect your ability to operate this
machine.
16. Do not use this machine if you are mentally or
physically unable to operate this machine safely.
Maintenance and Storage
1. Frequently check the blade for wear or damage
such as cracks and nicks. A blade that is bent or
damaged must be immediately replaced with a
factory replacement blade. For safety and good
cutting performance, replace the blade every two
years. Frequently check the blade bolt and the
engine mounting bolts. Replace damaged bolts
and tighten loose bolts.
2. Keep all nuts, bolts, and screws tight to be sure
the equipment is in safe working condition.
3. Never store equipment with petrol in the tank in-
side a building where fumes may reach an open
flame or spark. Allow the engine to cool before
storing in any enclosure.
4. To reduce fire hazards, keep the engine free of
grass, leaves, or excessive grease.
5. Replace faulty silencers.
6. Check the grass catcher bag frequently for wear
or deterioration. For storage, always make sure
the grass bag is empty. Replace a worn bag with
a new factory replacement bag for safety.
7. Use only Hayter approved replacement parts.
