This document describes the ENERGY STAR RATED DEHUMIDIFIER, available in 22, 35, and 50 Pint capacity models (HME020030N, HME020006N, HME020031N, HME020391N). This appliance is designed to remove moisture from the air, improving comfort and preventing issues related to high humidity.
Function Description
The dehumidifier operates by drawing in humid air, passing it over evaporator coils to condense moisture, and then expelling drier air. It features an Auto Defrost function that automatically cycles off the compressor and runs the fan when frost builds up on the coils, ensuring efficient operation. In case of an unexpected power cut, the Auto-Restart function will resume operation with the previous settings once power is restored. A Power on Delay of three minutes is incorporated to protect the compressor from damage after a complete cycle or power interruption.
The device offers various operational modes controlled via a user-friendly panel. The primary function is dehumidification, with the ability to set a target humidity level between 35% and 85% Relative Humidity (RH) in 5% increments. For drier air, users can set a lower percentage value, and for damper air, a higher value. The dehumidifier also includes a Continuous mode, where it operates continuously without stopping until the bucket is full. In this mode, the humidity adjustment buttons are locked.
A unique Comfort mode is available, which automatically presets the humidity level based on the ambient temperature: 55% RH for temperatures below 65°F, 50% RH for 65-77°F, and 45% RH for temperatures above 77°F. This mode simplifies operation by eliminating the need for manual humidity adjustments.
The dehumidifier is equipped with a fan speed control (Turbo button) allowing users to select between High and Normal fan speeds. High speed is recommended for maximum moisture removal, while Normal speed is suitable for quieter operation once the desired humidity level is reached.
A Timer function allows users to set an Auto on or Auto off time between 0 and 24 hours in 0.5-hour increments up to 10 hours, and then 1-hour increments up to 24 hours. This feature enables scheduled operation, conserving energy and allowing the device to run only when needed. The timer runs for a single cycle, requiring re-setting for subsequent scheduled use.
Usage Features
Before first use, it is crucial to keep the unit upright for 24 hours outside its box to prevent internal damage to the refrigeration system. The dehumidifier is designed to operate in environments between 41°F (5°C) and 90°F (32°C).
Water collection can be managed in two ways:
- Bucket Use: When the internal bucket is full, the dehumidifier automatically shuts off, and a "Full" indicator light illuminates. The user must then remove and empty the bucket. The LED display will show a "P2" error code, and any active timers will be canceled.
- Continuous Draining: For extended operation without manual emptying, the dehumidifier can be connected to a floor drain or suitable drainage facility using a water hose with a female threaded end. It is essential to ensure a tight connection to prevent leaks and that the hose slopes downward for smooth water flow. This method is not recommended when outdoor temperatures are 32°F (0°C) or below, as water freezing in the hose could damage the unit.
- Pump Draining (HME020391N only): This model includes a pump feature for draining water to a higher elevation (up to 16.4 ft). Users must attach a dedicated pump drain hose (1/4" outer diameter, 16.4 ft length) to the pump drain hose outlet, ensuring the continuous drain hose is removed and its plastic cover is tightly replaced. Pressing the "PUMP" button activates this function. It is normal for the pump to make loud noises for the first 3-5 minutes of operation. Similar to continuous draining, pump draining should not be used in freezing temperatures.
The dehumidifier is portable, featuring casters for easy movement. However, it is advised not to force casters over carpet or move the unit with water in the bucket to prevent tipping and spills. Proper placement requires the unit to be on a level, sturdy section of the floor, with adequate clearance (more than 15.75 inches from the back and 7.9 inches from the sides) to allow for proper airflow. Intake and exhaust openings should not be covered.
Maintenance Features
Regular maintenance is vital for efficient and safe operation.
- Cleaning the Grille and Case: The exterior case and air intake/outlet grilles should be cleaned with water and a mild detergent. Avoid splashing water directly onto the main unit to prevent electrical shock or rust. A vacuum attachment or brush can be used for the grilles.
- Cleaning the Bucket: The water collection bucket should be cleaned every two weeks with water and mild detergent to prevent mold or bacterial growth.
- Cleaning the Air Filter: The air filter should be cleaned with potable water at least once every 30 days. A "Filter" light will flash after 250 hours of operation as a reminder. After cleaning, pressing the filter button will reset the reminder. Operating the dehumidifier without a filter is not recommended, as dirt and lint can clog the unit and reduce performance.
Storage:
For long-term storage, the dehumidifier should be prepared as follows:
- Turn off the unit and wait one day for all internal water to drain into the bucket, then empty the bucket.
- Clean the main unit, bucket, and air filter.
- Wrap and bundle the power cord.
- Cover the dehumidifier with a plastic bag.
- Store the unit upright in a dry, well-ventilated area.
Safety Precautions:
Several safety instructions must be followed:
- Do not exceed the power outlet rating or modify the power cord.
- Do not operate or turn off the unit by plugging/unplugging; use the control panel.
- Avoid using the unit with a damaged power cord or in locations exposed to combustible gas or near heat sources.
- Disconnect power if strange sounds, smells, or smoke occur.
- Do not attempt to repair the unit yourself.
- Ensure the unit is properly grounded and avoid using extension cords or adapter plugs.
- Do not touch the plug with wet hands.
- Do not drink the drained water.
- Do not remove the water bucket while the unit is working.
- Do not use in small spaces or where it may be splashed by water.
- Keep children, infants, and the elderly in mind when setting humidity levels.
- Never insert fingers or foreign objects into openings.
- Do not place heavy objects on the power cord or climb/sit on the unit.
- Always insert filters securely.
- If water enters the unit, turn it off, disconnect power, and contact customer service.
- Do not place flower vases or other water containers on top.
- During thunderstorms, cut off power to prevent lightning damage.
- Keep all plastic bags away from children.
