MAINTENANCE
HOW TO REPLACE THE BLADE
The blad e is subject to
wear
and
damage
, such as nicks and
dents. This will not
gene
rally affect its function.
The blade is designed to not require sharpeni ng. Do not
attempt to sharpen the blade. The blade is also reversible.
It nicks or dents are excessive, remove the blade and turn it
around. Th is will provide a fresh cutting e
dge
. Replace the
blade if both sides are worn or
damaged
.

Never store the e
dger
indoors with fuel in the fuel tank.
Never store in an enclosed, poorly ventilated area where
fumes could reach an ope n flame, a spark or a pilot light
as on a furnace,
water
heater or clothes dryer. Allow
engine to cool before storing unit.
A WARNING
Do not remove gasoline while inside a building, near a
fire,or whileyou smoke. Gasolinefumes can cause an
explos
ion or a fire.
NOTE: A yearly checkup or tune-up at an authorized service center
will make sure that the edger will provide maximum pertormancefor
the
next
sea
so
n.
When the edger is put in storage for thirtydays or more, the fo
llowing
stepsshould befollowed to make sure the edger is in goodconditionthe
nextsea
so
n.
To replace the blade, follow the steps below. (Figure 18)
1. Disconnect the spa rk plug wire from the spark plug.
2. Remove the blade locknut that holds the blade to the drive
shaft .

To remove or tighten the blade locknut, always use the
method shown in Fi

e 18. Al
ways
position the holding

nch on the nut behind the blade .
3. Remove the blade.
4. Insta ll a new blade and blade locknut. Tighten the blade
locknut to a torque of
40-45 foot-pounds [54-61 Nm].

1. Let the engine run until it is out of gasoline.
2. Change the oil by following instructions underEngine
Ma
inte
nan
ce.
3. Remove the spark plug from the cylinder. Pour one ounce of oil
into the cylinder. Slowly pull the recoil-start grip so that the oil
will protect the cylinder. Install a new spark plug in the cylinder.
Pull starter handle slowly a few times to distribute oil.
4. Clean the dirt and debris from the cylinder cooling fins and the
engine housing.
5. Completelyclean the edger. Remove all dirt, grease,leaves, etc.
6. Check the edger for worn or damaged parts. Have damaged
parts replaced if necessary.

hfen all loose hardware.
8. Apply lubrication as directed in Maintenance section.
9. Put the unit in a building that has good ventilation.
10. Cover the edger with a suitable protective cover that does not
retain moisture. Do not use plastic. Plastic cannot breathe which
allows condensation to form and will cause your unit to rust.
