The VC hydronic valve consists of a valve body and replaceable
characterized cartridge assembly.
Depending on the valve model selected, they can be used with a
VC2114 or VC8114 series actuator to provide on-off ow control, or
with a VC6930 or VC7930 series actuator to provide proportional ow
control. Two way bodies may be plumbed in either direction. Three-way
bodies may be used in either diverting or mixing applications.
Replacing the cartridge rebuilds the valve. The valve body should be
able to stay in the pipes indenitely.
VC actuators, ordered separately, use cam-operated cartridge travel to
resist water hammer. Limit switches prevent motor overrun.

Overview

The Honeywell VCZA,B,M,N Series Cartridge Valve is a hydronic valve system consisting of a bronze valve body and a replaceable, characterized cartridge assembly. These valves are designed for use with VC2114 or VC8114 series actuators for on-off flow control, or with VC6930 or VC7930 series actuators for proportional flow control. Two-way bodies can be plumbed in either direction, while three-way bodies support both diverting and mixing applications. A key feature is that replacing the cartridge rebuilds the valve, allowing the valve body to remain in the pipes indefinitely. VC actuators, ordered separately, utilize cam-operated cartridge travel to resist water hammer, and limit switches prevent motor overrun.

Function Description:

The VCZA,B,M,N Series valves control the flow of water in hydronic systems. Depending on the actuator, they can provide either on-off or proportional flow control. In diverting applications, water enters through port AB and is diverted through end ports A or B. In mixing applications, water enters through A or B and exits through AB. The valve's flow characteristics can be linear or equal percentage, as detailed in Table 2 of the manual. The cartridge assembly, made of Ryton™ (polyphenylene sulphide) and Noryl™ (polyphenylene oxide), with EPDM rubber O-ring seals and a stainless steel stem, is designed for durability and reliable operation within specified temperature and pressure ranges.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Operating Ambient: 32 to 150°F [0 to +65°C], 5-95% RH (non-condensing).
  • Fluid Temperatures: 34 to 203°F [1 to 95°C].
  • Shipping and Storage Temperature: -40 to 150°F [-40 to +65°C].
  • Atmosphere: Non-corrosive, non-explosive.
  • Valve Materials: Body: Bronze; Cartridge: Ryton™ and Noryl™; O-ring seals: EPDM rubber; Stem: Stainless steel.
  • Pressure Rating:
    • Static: 300 psig [20 Bar] maximum.
    • Burst: 1500 psig [100 Bar].
    • Operating Differential and Close-off: 60 psi maximum [4 bar].
  • Stem Travel: 0.4 inches [10 mm].
  • Spring Force:
    • 1000 and 6000 Series (Silver): 14 lbf.
    • 3000 and 7000 Series (Red): 20 lbf.
  • Pipe Fitting Sizes: Available in 1/2", 3/4", 1", and 1-1/4" SWEAT and NPT (internal) connections. Dimensions vary by fitting type, as shown in Table 1.
  • Cv Ratings: A wide range of Cv values are available for both 2-way and 3-way cartridges, supporting various flow requirements (e.g., quick open, high Cv, medium Cv, low Cv, equal percentage).

Usage Features:

  • Installation Flexibility: The valve can be plumbed at any angle, including vertical piping, though it's preferable not to have the actuator below the horizontal level of the body. The actuator can be installed in any of four orientations to optimize wiring.
  • Actuator Attachment: The actuator automatically latches to the valve. To attach, align the coupling hole in the bottom of the actuator with the valve stem, press the actuator down, and turn it counter-clockwise by 1/8 turn (45 degrees) until it lines up with the piping. To detach, press up on the latch mechanism below the red manual open lever, simultaneously press the actuator down, and turn it counter-clockwise by 1/8 turn.
  • Plumbing Best Practices: When making plumbing connections, hold the valve body or use an adjustable spanner on the hexagonal or flat faces of the valve body. Avoid gripping the actuator or placing the raised "H" logo between vice jaws to prevent deformation.
  • Water Quality: These valves are designed for cold, warm, and hot water applications. Water must be properly filtered, treated, and conditioned according to local conditions. Initial system flushing, chemical water treatment, and the use of a 50 micron (or finer) 10% system side-stream filter(s) are recommended. Filters should be removed before flushing.
  • Fluid Compatibility: Only diethylene glycol, ethylene glycol, and propylene glycol (antifreeze solutions) with a minimum 50% water dilution can be used. Boiler additives, solder flux, and wetted materials that are petroleum-based or contain mineral oil, hydrocarbons, or ethylene glycol acetate are strictly prohibited. The presence of iron oxide (red rust) voids the valve warranty.
  • Compression Models: For compression fittings, tighten nuts to make a watertight seal without overtightening (maximum torque: 33 ft-lb for 22 mm, 48 ft-lb for 28 mm).
  • Sweat Models: For sweat-fitted valves, the cartridge is shipped loose to prevent damage during soldering. After soldering and cooling, insert the cartridge assembly into the valve body and tighten with the enclosed wrench (maximum torque: 40 in-lb).

Maintenance Features:

  • Cartridge Replacement: The cartridge is replaceable, allowing for easy repair and rebuilding of the valve. This also enables changing the Cv rating of a valve by installing a different cartridge. Two-way cartridges fit all two-way bodies, and three-way cartridges fit all three-way bodies.
  • Replacement Procedure:
    1. Disconnect power supply.
    2. Disconnect leadwires to the actuator (label for rewiring).
    3. Remove the valve actuator as described above.
    4. Remove the old cartridge using a 40007029-002 wrench or pliers.
    5. Clean the valve surfaces and apply new O-rings (for 3-way valves only).
    6. Insert the new pre-lubricated cartridge assembly into the valve body and tighten down with the enclosed wrench until it bottoms out (maximum torque: 40 in-lb).
    7. Replace the valve actuator.
    8. Reconnect leadwires or Molex™ connector.
    9. Refill hydronic system or restore system flow.
    10. Restore power and check operation.
  • Initial System Flushing: The VC actuator manual lever can be put in the fully up or half open (down) position to allow initial system flushing with the actuator mounted, even without electrical hook-up. Alternatively, reusable flush caps (part #272866B) can be purchased for flushing.
  • Leakage Check: If the valve is leaking, drain the system or isolate the valve from the system. Check for internal parts damage and replace the entire actuator assembly if needed.
  • Noise Reduction: Honeywell VC series hydronic valves are designed for silent operation. However, water noise may occur as a result of excessive water velocity. Piping noises may also occur in high temperature (over 212°F [100°C]) systems with insufficient water pressure.
