Night-time temperature reduction
Overnight, or if you are out, it is best to set the thermostat to
a lower temperature, as it will save you energy. In general a
reduction of 5°C is recommended, but this will depend on your
heating system and the amount of insulation in your home.

Troubleshooting
Low batteries
If you see this battery icon then you need
to replace the batteries right away.
No power to the thermostat
If the thermostat screen is blank after initial installation,
then check the protective tab has been removed from
the batteries. Otherwise, try replacing the batteries.
RF communication error
If these icons are flashing, then there may be an issue
with the signal from the Boiler Relay. First check there is
mains power to the Boiler Relay. If this does not resolve
the problem, consult your installer.
Defective thermostat
If this icon is displayed then the thermostat is no
longer functioning and will need to be replaced.
Set Temperature Indicator
Means the figure on the screen is your set temperature,
rather than your current room temperature.
Boiler Relay Connection
Means your thermostat is successfully
connected to your Boiler Relay.
Internet Gateway Connection (optional)
Means your thermostat is successfully
connected to your Internet Gateway.
Heating on
Means there is a requirement for some heating, so
your boiler should either be on or cycling on/off.

Overview

This document describes the Honeywell Home Y87RFC Connected Single Zone Thermostat, a device designed to manage room temperature efficiently and conveniently. It offers both local manual control and remote operation when connected to an Internet Gateway.

Function Description

The Honeywell Home Y87RFC thermostat's primary function is to measure and control the room temperature. Users can set a desired temperature, and the device will work to maintain it as accurately as possible. When connected to a Honeywell RFG100 Internet Gateway, the thermostat gains remote control capabilities, allowing users to manage their heating system via a smartphone app. This connectivity also enables scheduling features, providing greater flexibility and energy efficiency. The device communicates wirelessly with a Boiler Relay to control the heating system.

Usage Features

Setting Room Temperature: To set the desired room temperature, users simply turn the dial on the thermostat. Turning the dial right increases the temperature, while turning it left decreases it. Each 'click' of the dial adjusts the temperature by 0.5°C. After five seconds, the display reverts to showing the current room temperature. Users can check the set temperature by turning the dial one 'click' in either direction; the set temperature will flash briefly before the display returns to the current room temperature.

Night-time Temperature Reduction: For energy saving, it is recommended to set the thermostat to a lower temperature overnight or when the home is unoccupied. A reduction of 5°C is generally advised, though the optimal reduction may vary depending on the heating system and home insulation.

Display Indicators: The thermostat features several display symbols to provide information about its status:

  • Current Room Temperature: The main number displayed on the screen.
  • Set Temperature Indicator: A small arrow pointing to the displayed number indicates that it is the set temperature, not the current room temperature.
  • Heating On: A flame icon indicates that the thermostat is calling for heat, meaning the boiler should be active or cycling.
  • Boiler Relay Connection: A radio wave icon confirms a successful wireless connection between the thermostat and the Boiler Relay.
  • Internet Gateway Connection (optional): A square icon with an antenna symbol indicates a successful connection to the Internet Gateway.
  • Clock Symbol: Appears when a remote time schedule is active or a timed override has been set.
  • Lock Symbol: Indicates that the temperature setting has been fixed and cannot be changed locally.
  • OFF Symbol: A circle with a vertical line indicates that the thermostat has been switched off remotely.
  • Remote Temperature Change: When the set temperature is changed remotely, a square border appears around the Connected symbol.

Remote Operation (with RFG100 Internet Gateway): When bound to an RFG100 Internet Gateway, the thermostat can be controlled remotely. The Connected symbol (a square with an antenna) will be displayed, confirming the connection to the Gateway. Users can check the temperature setting by turning the dial, which will cancel any app-made settings unless the lock symbol is displayed.

Binding to an RFG100 Internet Gateway: If the Gateway is purchased separately, users need to bind the thermostat to it for remote operation and scheduling. This involves:

  1. Touching and holding the right-hand touch zone on the thermostat for about 10 seconds to activate the binding screen.
  2. Briefly touching the right-hand touch zone again to send the binding signal. The radio wave and antenna symbols will flash until binding is successful.
  3. Upon successful binding, the green LED on the Gateway will light up.
  4. The thermostat display will show the signal strength between the devices (1 for lowest, 5 for highest) for a few seconds, then revert to the normal screen, including the antenna symbol to confirm connection. Users then need to refer to their Gateway instructions to create an online account and download the smartphone app for full remote control.

Maintenance Features

Replacing Batteries: The thermostat is battery-powered. A battery icon displayed on the screen indicates that the batteries need to be replaced. To do this:

  1. Remove the dial.
  2. Separate the thermostat from its mounting plate.
  3. Replace the discharged batteries with two new AA alkaline batteries.
  4. Reattach the thermostat to the mounting plate and replace the dial.

Troubleshooting:

  • Low Batteries: If the battery icon is displayed, replace the batteries immediately.
  • No Power to the Thermostat: If the screen is blank after initial installation, ensure the protective tab has been removed from the batteries. If not, try replacing the batteries.
  • RF Communication Error: If the radio wave and antenna icons are flashing, there may be an issue with the signal from the Boiler Relay. First, check that the Boiler Relay has mains power. If the problem persists, consult an installer.
  • Defective Thermostat: If a specific icon (a square with an 'X' inside) is displayed, the thermostat is no longer functioning and requires replacement.
