Overview

This document is a user manual for a Hoover Built-In Refrigerator, specifically a Fridge-Freezer model BHBS 172 UKT. It provides comprehensive instructions for safe operation, installation, food storage, and maintenance of the appliance.

Function Description

The Hoover BHBS 172 UKT is a built-in refrigerator designed for household and domestic applications. Its primary function is the storage of food, offering both a refrigerator compartment for fresh food and a freezer compartment for frozen items and ice cube production. The appliance utilizes R600a as a refrigerant, an environmentally friendly natural gas. It is designed to operate within specific ambient temperature ranges, depending on its climate class, to ensure optimal cooling effectiveness. The refrigerator compartment automatically defrosts, with the defrost water collected and evaporated. The freezer compartment requires periodic manual defrosting to remove frost build-up.

Usage Features

Installation and Initial Use: Before first use, the refrigerator should be kept in an upright position for 3 hours after transportation to allow for efficient compressor operation. It should be placed in a location not exposed to direct sunlight, at least 50 cm away from stoves, gas ovens, and heaters, and 5 cm from electrical ovens. If placed next to a deep freezer, a minimum 2 cm gap should be maintained to prevent humidity on the outer surface. The appliance requires a 220-240 V at 50Hz power supply with an efficient ground connection, and the plug must be accessible after installation. The adjustable front legs should be adjusted to ensure the appliance is level and stable before placing food inside. Prior to initial use, all parts should be wiped with warm water and sodium bicarbonate, then rinsed and dried.

Thermostat Setting: The internal temperature of both compartments is regulated by a thermostat knob. Rotating the knob from position 1 to 5 allows for colder temperatures. Settings 1-2 are recommended for short-term food storage in the freezer, 3-4 for long-term storage, and 5 for freezing fresh food, which will cause the appliance to run at colder temperatures. It is important not to rotate the knob beyond position 1, as this will stop the appliance. Temperature adjustments should consider the frequency of door openings and the quantity of food stored. After plugging in or after a power breakdown, a 5-minute delay function protects the compressor before normal operation resumes.

Food Storage:

  • Refrigerator Compartment: Fresh food should not be placed in direct contact with the rear wall to allow air circulation. Hot food or evaporating liquids should not be placed inside. All food should be stored in closed containers or wrapped to reduce humidity and prevent frost formation. Meat should be placed on the glass shelf just above the vegetable bin, where the air is coldest. Fruits and vegetables can be placed in the crisper without packaging. To maintain cold air, avoid frequent or prolonged door openings.
  • Freezer Compartment: For freezing fresh food, items should be wrapped and sealed properly in airtight packaging (special freezer bags, aluminum foil, polythene bags, or plastic containers are ideal). Fresh food should not come into contact with already frozen food. All packs should be marked with the date and content, and the stated storage time should not be exceeded. In case of a power failure, avoid opening the freezer door to slow temperature rise. Warm food should never be placed in the freezer. When buying frozen food, ensure packaging is undamaged and store it as soon as possible. Thawed food must not be refrozen but should be cooked and consumed quickly or refrozen after cooking. To maximize net capacity, drawers can be removed, and items stored directly on cooling tubes.

Accessories:

  • Ice Tray: Fill with water and place in the freezer. Once frozen, twist the tray to release ice cubes.
  • Bottle Holder: Use to prevent bottles from slipping or falling over.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning: Before any cleaning operation, the appliance must be disconnected from the power supply. Water should not be poured directly over the appliance. The refrigerator compartment should be cleaned periodically with a solution of bicarbonate of soda and lukewarm water. Accessories should be cleaned separately with soap and water and should not be placed in a dishwasher. Abrasive products, detergents, or soaps should not be used. After washing, rinse with clean water and dry thoroughly. Reconnect the plug with dry hands. The evaporating tray and defrost water drain hole in the refrigerator compartment should be cleaned periodically with the defrost drain plug to prevent water accumulation. Pouring 1½ glasses of water into the drain hole can help clean it.

Defrosting:

  • Refrigerator Compartment: Defrosting is automatic during operation.
  • Freezer Compartment: Frost on freezer shelves should be removed periodically. Sharp metal objects should not be used, as they can damage the refrigeration circuit; use the provided plastic scraper instead. Defrosting is necessary when frost exceeds 5 mm. Before defrosting, place frozen food in a cool place, wrapped in newspaper, to maintain its temperature. To accelerate defrosting, place basins of warm water in the freezer compartment. After defrosting, dry the compartment with a sponge or cloth, then return food to the freezer, consuming it within a short period.

Light Bulb Replacement: For models with a light bulb in the fridge compartment:

  1. Unplug the fridge freezer.
  2. Carefully remove the light cover from the top panel using a screwdriver.
  3. Replace with a 15-watt bulb.
  4. Reinstall the light cover.
  5. Wait 5 minutes before re-plugging the fridge and restoring the thermostat to its original position. For models with LED lighting, contact the help desk for replacement by authorized personnel only.

Shipment and Repositioning: The original packaging and foam can be kept for re-transportation. The fridge should be fastened with thick packaging, bands, or strong cords, following transportation instructions on the package. Movable parts (shelves, accessories, vegetable bins) should be removed or fixed against shocks using bands. The fridge should always be carried in an upright position.

Energy Saving: To optimize energy saving:

  • Install the appliance away from heat sources and direct sunlight, in a well-ventilated room.
  • Avoid placing hot food in the refrigerator to prevent increasing internal temperature and continuous compressor operation.
  • Do not overstuff the appliance to ensure proper air circulation.
  • Defrost the appliance when ice builds up to facilitate cold transfer.
  • In case of power absence, keep the refrigerator door closed.
  • Open doors as little as possible.
  • Avoid setting temperatures too cold.
  • Regularly remove dust from the rear of the appliance.

Troubleshooting: Before calling for after-sales service, check for common issues:

  • Appliance not operating: Check for power failure, ensure the plug is properly inserted and not loose, verify the thermostat setting, and check if the socket is defective by plugging in another appliance.
  • Poor performance: Check for overloading, imperfectly closed doors, or insufficient ventilation ducts in the kitchen unit.
  • Noise: A slight bubbling sound from the cooling gas is normal. If other noises occur, check if the appliance is installed firmly and if objects on it are vibrating.
  • Water in the lower part of the refrigerator: Check if the defrost water drain hole is clogged and clean it with the defrost drain plug.
  • Compressor delay: A 5-minute delay after power loss or re-plugging is normal to balance gas pressure in the cooling system.

If problems persist after following these instructions, consult an authorized service center. If the refrigerator will not be used for a long time (e.g., summer holidays), disconnect the plug, clean the refrigerator, and leave the door open to prevent humidification or odor formation.
