Overview

The Hoover Scrub'n'Vac™ Shampoo-Polisher is a versatile household appliance designed for comprehensive floor care, encompassing cleaning, waxing, shampooing, and polishing of various floor surfaces. This owner's manual provides detailed instructions for assembly, operation, and maintenance, ensuring optimal performance and longevity of the appliance.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Hoover Scrub'n'Vac™ is to provide a multi-purpose solution for floor maintenance. It is capable of:

  • Cleaning and Waxing Hard Surface Floors: Utilizing either a water method (for floors cleanable with soap/detergent and water) or a solvent cleaning wax method (for wood and sealed cork floors).
  • Shampooing Carpet and Rugs: Specifically designed for rotary and foam type carpet shampooers, using recommended shampoo concentrations.
  • Polishing and Buffing Floors: To achieve high-lustre finishes on waxed floors.
  • Wet Pickup: For quickly picking up spilled liquids like water or soft drinks from hard surface floors.

Important Technical Specifications:

While specific technical data like motor wattage or tank capacity are not explicitly listed, the manual highlights several key operational aspects:

  • Polarized Plug: The appliance features a polarized plug (one blade wider than the other) to reduce the risk of electric shock, requiring insertion into a polarized outlet.
  • Double Insulation: The unit is double insulated, meaning it has two systems of insulation instead of grounding, and requires identical replacement parts if serviced.
  • Motor Lubrication: The motor is equipped with two sleeve bearings that are sufficiently lubricated for the life of the motor, and no additional lubricant should be added.
  • Voltage: The shampoo-polisher should only be operated at the voltage specified on its data plate.

Usage Features:

The Hoover Scrub'n'Vac™ incorporates several user-friendly features:

  • Control Button: Located on the handle, it has three positions: "OFF," "SCRUB-POLISH-SHAMPOO," and "WET PICKUP." Users must return the button to "OFF" before switching between modes.
  • Trigger: Used to dispense cleaning solution and also serves as a cord storage hook when not in use.
  • Tank System: Features a removable tank with two sections – one for clean solution and one for soiled solution. The tank handle also acts as a carrying handle.
  • Handle Release: A foot-operated release allows for lowering the handle.
  • Brush and Pad Attachment: Brushes and pads attach firmly over brush shafts with a "click" indicating correct positioning. Removal is by grasping the center and lifting. Pads are specifically designed for scrubbing-waxing-polishing brushes.
  • Rug Shampoo Accessory: Converts the unit for shampooing carpets and rugs, fitting onto the wheel axle and covering the bottom of the polisher.
  • Foam Generator: Converts cleaning solution into foam for carpet shampooing.
  • Squeegees: Located at the front of the base, used for water pickup from hard surface floors.
  • Wheels: Provide ease of movement during operation.
  • Furniture Guard: Protects furniture from accidental contact.
  • Cord Storage Hook: For neat storage of the power cord.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the appliance's performance and is detailed in the manual:

  • Tank and Tubing Cleaning: The tank should be washed and rinsed after each use. Tubing can be rinsed by filling the tank with clear water and holding/releasing the trigger several times.
  • Furniture Guard Cleaning: Wipe with dry cleaning fluid or liquid detergent to remove wax and dirt.
  • Base Unit Cleaning: Remove brushes and dry the bottom of the shampoo-polisher.
  • Foam Generator Cleaning: Remove (1/4 turn counterclockwise), wash in hot water and detergent, rinse, and replace (matching projections with slots and turning clockwise) after each use.
  • Filter Bar Cleaning: Located between the squeegees, it collects large dirt particles. It should be removed (by lifting from each end) and cleaned under running water after each use or if pickup efficiency decreases.
  • Brush and Pad Cleaning:
    • Scrubbing-waxing-polishing brushes and cleaning-waxing pads: Wash in hot water and detergent to remove wax, rinse well, and dry completely on paper towels (brushes down).
    • Shampoo brushes: Hold under warm running water to remove lint, shake off excess water, and dry completely on paper towels (brushes down).
    • Felt and high lustre polishing pads: Wash occasionally to remove wax, shake several times (for high lustre pads to restore fluffiness), and dry thoroughly. Do not use while damp.
  • Defoamer Cake: Located inside the upper part of the tank housing, it reduces foam in the recovery tank. It should be checked periodically and typically lasts about one year. Replacement instructions are on the tank housing, and new cakes can be purchased from a Hoover Service Center.

The manual also includes a "Floor Care Hints" chart for troubleshooting common floor problems related to waxing and cleaning, and a "If You Have a Problem" section for diagnosing and resolving operational issues, emphasizing contacting Hoover Service Centers rather than returning the product to the store.
