Overview

The Horner XLE/XLEe & XLT/XLTe - Model 5 is a versatile automation controller designed for a wide range of industrial applications. This device integrates a programmable logic controller (PLC) with an operator control station (OCS) and various input/output capabilities, making it a compact and powerful solution for control and monitoring tasks.

The core function of the XLE/XLT Model 5 is to provide robust control over industrial processes. It supports both register-based advanced ladder logic and variable-based advanced ladder logic, adhering to IEC 61131-3 languages, which allows for flexible and powerful programming. The controller features a substantial logic program size of 256kB, enabling complex automation sequences. Its fast scan rate, ranging from 0.7ms/kB for XLE to 0.8ms/kB for XLT, ensures quick response times for critical operations.

The device is equipped with a comprehensive set of digital and analog I/O. It includes 12 configurable digital DC inputs, with 4 of these capable of high-speed counter functions, and 16 digital DC outputs, 2 of which can be configured for PWM output. The digital inputs and outputs can be wired in either positive or negative logic, providing adaptability to different field devices. For analog signals, it offers 2 high-resolution analog inputs that support a variety of ranges including 0-10VDC, 0-20mA, 4-20mA, 100mV, PT100, and multiple thermocouple types (J, K, N, T, E, R, S, B). Additionally, there are 2 analog outputs for 0-10VDC and 0-20mA signals. These extensive I/O capabilities allow the controller to interface with a broad spectrum of sensors, actuators, and other industrial equipment.

A key feature of the XLE/XLT Model 5 is its integrated user interface. The XLEe and XLTe models boast a transflective LCD display that is sun-light readable, with resolutions of 128 x 64 pixels for XLEe and 160 x 128 pixels for XLTe. The monochrome display is complemented by an LED backlight with a lifetime exceeding 30,000 hours. Brightness control is available, with 0-100% for XLT and On/Off via a system register for XLE. The XLTe model includes a resistive touchscreen for intuitive interaction, offering over 1,000,000 touch life cycles. Physical navigation is also provided through function keys and navigation keys, offering a tactile alternative for control. The built-in storage of 16 MB allows for up to 1023 user-program screens, each capable of displaying up to 50 objects, facilitating comprehensive visualization and control directly from the device.

Connectivity is a strong suit of the XLE/XLT Model 5. It includes two RS-232/RS-485 serial ports, supporting full handshaking or half-duplex communication, with software-selectable termination and biasing for RS-485. For modern connectivity, a USB Mini-B port is available for programming. The device also features a dedicated CAN port, isolated at 1 kV, supporting CSCAN, CANopen, DeviceNet, and J1939 protocols, which are crucial for industrial networking. Ethernet versions (XLEe and XLTe) further expand communication options, supporting TCP/IP, Modbus TCP, FTP, SRTP, EGD, ICMP, and ASCII protocols. This wide array of communication interfaces enables seamless integration into existing control systems and networks.

For data management and application updates, the controller supports removable memory via a high-capacity microSD slot, compatible with MicroSD, SDHC, and SDXC cards up to 32 GB, formatted in FAT32. This allows for easy application updates and datalogging, providing valuable insights into process performance. The XLTe model also includes an audio feature, with a beeper that can be controlled by the system or software, adding an auditory dimension to alerts or user feedback.

Maintenance features are designed for ease of use and longevity. The device incorporates a battery-backed real-time clock, powered by a replaceable CR2450 lithium coin cell battery, which typically lasts 7 to 10 years. This battery also retains general purpose register values, ensuring critical data is preserved during power outages. Installation is straightforward, utilizing a clip installation method to ensure a robust and watertight seal, suitable for various enclosure types (1, 3R, 4, 4X, 12, 12K & 13). The panel cutout dimensions are precisely specified to ensure a proper fit and environmental protection.

Safety is paramount, with several warnings and precautions outlined in the manual. These include instructions for proper grounding, fusing of voltage measurement inputs, and replacing fuses with the correct type and rating. The device is suitable for Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C and D or non-hazardous locations. Specific warnings regarding battery handling and disconnection under live circuit conditions are provided to ensure safe operation and maintenance. The manual also emphasizes the importance of following all applicable codes and standards during installation and using proper personal protective equipment. Precautions for connecting to PCs via serial or USB are also highlighted, advising users to ensure proper grounding to prevent potential damage from voltage differences.

In summary, the Horner XLE/XLEe & XLT/XLTe - Model 5 is a robust, integrated controller offering extensive I/O, flexible programming, a user-friendly interface, and diverse communication options, all designed for reliable operation and easy maintenance in industrial environments.
