The HORSCH HD-Series Joker is an agricultural implement designed for soil cultivation, specifically for mixing harvest residues and soil into the working depth. This owner's manual covers the HD 20, HD 30, and HD 40 models, with serial numbers ranging from 340020015001 to 340020015003 for the HD20, 340030015001 to 340030015002 for the HD30, and 340040016001 for the HD40. The manual emphasizes safety, proper operation, and maintenance to ensure efficient and long-lasting performance.
Function Description:
The HD-Series Joker utilizes serrated discs to cut harvest residues and mix them into the soil. This process is crucial for effective soil cultivation and residue management. The machine is designed to operate at various working depths, with the depth primarily controlled by the packer system and drawbar. Hydraulic cylinders are integral to the machine's operation, facilitating lifting, lowering, folding, and unfolding, as well as maintaining wing pressure and depth control. The Roll-Flex packer system at the rear aids in soil consolidation and provides a consistent field finish.

Usage Features:
- Hitching/Unhitching: The machine hitches to a tractor via a trailer coupling ring. Hydraulic lines and road lighting equipment must be connected and checked. Safety stops are used during parking and maintenance.
- Folding/Unfolding: Folding and unfolding operations should only be performed on firm, level ground, preferably in the field to prevent damage to discs and road surfaces. The LIFT circuit must be fully extended before these operations. Yellow safety stops are used on the front hitch and rear transport axle cylinders during folding.
- Phasing Hydraulic Cylinders: The machine features hydraulic rephasing cylinders on the rear packer system, connected in series for simultaneous lift/lower function. Proper phasing ensures consistent lifting distance and alignment. This involves extending cylinders to maximum pressure, allowing oil to flow through rephasing ports.
- Setting Wing Pressure: Wing pressure is adjustable (between 300-500 psi, not exceeding 500 psi) to keep the implement wings level with the rest of the machine during operation. A pressure gauge indicates the current pressure.
- Depth Setting – Manual Depth Control: Working depth is set by the packer and drawbar, controlled by a manual depth control linkage. Adjustments are made by turning a handle clockwise for shallower depth or counterclockwise for deeper depth. Leveling is achieved by adding or removing stops to the front hydraulic cylinder.
- Tracking – Manual Depth Control: To ensure the machine tracks straight, stops can be added or removed from the front cylinder. Adding stops corrects tracking to the right, while removing them corrects tracking to the left.
- Gauge Wheels: These wheels maintain working depth and provide stability, acting as sensing and supporting elements rather than load-bearing transport wheels. They are set after the main depth is established, ideally starting at a high position and then lowered to the ground in the field. HD30 and HD40 models use hydraulic cylinders for gauge wheel depth control, while HD20 uses a turnbuckle.
- Transport: Maximum permissible transportation widths, heights, axle loads, tire carrying capacities, and total weights must be observed. A maximum speed of 20 MPH is specified during transportation. The machine must be cleaned of soil before road travel, especially the rear Roll-Flex packer system.
Maintenance Features:
- General Maintenance: Regular cleaning and maintenance are crucial for operational availability and optimum performance. The manual provides a detailed maintenance schedule.
- Cleaning: High-pressure cleaning or direct water jets should not be used on hydraulic cylinders and bearings, as seals and bearings are not waterproof under high pressure.
- Lubrication: The machine should be lubricated regularly and after every pressure wash to ensure operational reliability and reduce repair costs. Specific lubrication points are identified for wing fold pivot pins, front hitch and rear axle pivot pins, manual depth control rod, gauge wheel turnbuckle, rotating axle HYD cylinder, rear lift HYD cylinder, transport wheel axle hubs, and gauge wheel axle hubs.
- Disc Hubs: These are oil-filled and maintenance-free unless oil seepage occurs. If seals or O-rings are damaged, they should be replaced, and the hub refilled with 1.0 ounces of high-performance 75w140 synthetic industrial gear oil.
- Roll-Flex Packer Springs: These are wear items and should be inspected for cracks, fractures, breakage, flattening, or excessive flexing (more than 1"). Damaged springs should be replaced immediately. A spring support kit (PN 04596220) is available to preserve packer tongue springs.
- Tire Information: Proper tire inflation is critical. HD20 transport tires should be at 64 PSI, and gauge wheels at 60 PSI. HD30/40 transport tires should be at 70 PSI, and gauge wheels at 60 PSI. Wheel lugs must be torqued to 220 ft.-lbs. for transport and 400 ft.-lbs. for gauge wheels.
- Troubleshooting: A troubleshooting guide is provided for common issues such as the machine not tracking straight, inconsistent depth, plugging, or slow lifting. Solutions often involve adjusting hydraulic settings, checking cylinder phasing, or cleaning the machine.
- Storage: For longer periods of non-use, the machine should be stored under a roofed area and protected against rust, ideally by spraying with biologically degradable oils.
- Safety: The manual includes various safety symbols and instructions, emphasizing the importance of reading the operating instructions, wearing protective clothing, and ensuring only authorized operators use the machine. It warns against crushing hazards, high-pressure fluids, and unauthorized modifications.
