12 Evaluating color laser printers
Evaluation
At HP, we typically test multiple printers in various environmental conditions to evaluate engine
reliability. We run the printers to engine life and record the supplies’ life, jam rate, and misfeed
rate.
This kind of extensive, long-term testing is beyond the limits of most companies’ resources;
however, it is possible to estimate their printer’s engine reliability. One option is to compare other
manufacturers’ duty-cycle ratings, base warranty (make sure it is at least one-year), and three-year
warranty costs. When comparing the HP Color LaserJet 4650 series printer with printers from
other manufacturers, consider the following:
• Does the printer perform consistently under various environmental conditions?
• After a few thousand pages, is the print quality the same as it was out of the box?
• How easy is it to maintain and calibrate the printer?
• When connected to a network, does the printer print correctly every time?
• What does it cost, in both expense and downtime, to replace empty print cartridges?
