IP features
The HX System provides a variety of standard and specialized IP
features designed to minimize space segment latencies and
support standard and advanced IP networking protocols and
services.
For the purpose of this discussion, the HX System IP features are
broken down into the following two groups.
Network layer features on page 51
Application layer network services on page 55
Network layer features
The network layer IP features provided in the HX system include:
Bandwidth conservation features:
IP header compression
Payload compression
PEP protocol implementation
IP packet delivery prioritization
NAT/PAT
Port Mapping
VLAN tagging
Each of these features is described in the following sections.
Bandwidth conservation
features
The HX System implements a variety of mechanisms for
reducing the amount of data that must be transmitted across the
space segment, and for reducing transport latency. These
techniques include:
IP packet payload compression
Inbound header compression
The performance enhancement proxy (PEP)
TurboPage
Note: The HX system also supports IPSec encryption. See
Two-way IPSec encryption on page 35 for a discussion of IPSec
support.
